a multiplication is when u have a certain amout of one thing and u need a certain amout of those groups, example : a box with 3 books in it and you need 4 boxes 4 X 3 = 12

substraction is when you have a number of things and you take a certain amount out example 12 books i sell 3 12 - 3 = 9

It is a vital difference... When you are using multiplication you will times a number by any given number. eg. 5x5=25 5x4=20. You can count by 5's 5 times to get the answer 25 .eg. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25.

When you are subtracting you are taking a number away from any given number .eg. 25-5=20. You can count down from 25, 5 times .eg. 25, 24, 23, 22, 21, 20 to receive your answer.
