New approaches to instruction are needed in all educational levels in order to develop the skills... more New approaches to instruction are needed in all educational levels in order to develop the skills suited to the twenty-first century (i.e., inquiry, problem solving, innovation, entrepreneurship, technological communication, experimental design, and investigativeness). This research evaluated the outcomes of an approach aiming to develop such skills based on students’ assessments of themselves and their peers with regard to investigative projects and course grades. The study is chiefly based on a quantitative paradigm with a multi-method approach. Data were primarily collected using a form to evaluate scientific investigation skills and learning gains; students’ project reports and examination papers were the other data sources, which were evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results revealed a low-to-moderate level of improvement in skills. In addition, the authors discovered that students were overestimating their gains, and that peer-evaluations seemed to function better than self-evaluations.

Öğretmenlerin bütünleştirmeye karşı mevcut tutumlarının tespiti ihtiyacı, bu alanda bir ölçeğin gerekliliğini ortaya koymaktadır. Bu çalışmada da bu eksikliği giderme yönünde bir çaba ortaya konacaktır. Bu çalışmanın amacı fen ve matematik alanlarında eğitim alan yetişkinlerin STEM eğitimi yaklaşımına dair olan tutumlarını ölçen bir ölçeği geliştirmektir. Bu amaçla alanda var olan bir ölçek temel alınmıştır ve litaratürdeki ölçek geliştirme basamakları takip edilmiştir. Ölçek, fen ve matematik alanlarında öğrenim gören toplam 300 öğretmen adayına uygulanmıştır. Ölçeğin kuramı karşılayıp karşılamadığının test edilmesi için yapılan doğrulayıcı ve açımlayıcı faktör analizlerinin sonucunda ölçeğin 2 faktörlü yapısı doğrulanmıştır. Ölçeğin güvenilirliği için yapılan analizler neticesinde ölçeğin her iki boyutu ve geneli için tatminkâr düzeyde alfa ölçümleri bulunmuştur. The need for teachers to determine their current attitudes towards integration reveals the necessity of a scale in this field. In this study, an effort will be made to eliminate this deficiency. The aim of the study is to develop a scale measuring attitudes towards STEM education. To fulfill this purpose, the authors used an already developed scale and followed the approach that exist in the literature. The scale was administered to a sample of 300 teacher candidates in the science and mathematics areas. Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses were made to understand whether or not the scale conforms to the theoretical construct which resulted in the confirmation of the two factor structure of the scale. The reliability analyses yielded satisfactory alpha values for both of the subscales. As a result of the analyses the adapted scale was found ready to be used in the Turkish context.
Changes in the nature of assessment in science and mathematics have led to a profound change in t... more Changes in the nature of assessment in science and mathematics have led to a profound change in the conceptions of assessment. The change in our understanding of assessment reflected a move toward the greater integration of assessment and learning-away from assessment instruments whose links to learning were weak. The aim of the current paper was to review how these changes were reflected in the Turkish context, mainly in 2 parts: (1) governmental interventions, including changes in the middle grades teacher education, assessment system, and curriculum, and (2) the implementation of these changes in the middle grades classrooms. The review is based on three sources, including the program documents, textbooks, and external examinations. The analysis of these sources suggested that the program documents were the most successful in guiding mathematics and science teachers' assessment practices; however, several problems in the implementation of the prescribed ideas in the middle grades classrooms remained unresolved.

Moreover, the reasons behind the choice of the methods, which could be the unit circle method, the ratio method, or the use of trigonometric identities, are also investigated to get an insight about their understanding. In this study, the relationship between the students' choices of methods in solving questions is examined in terms of instrumental or relational understanding. This is a multi-method research which involves a range of research strategies. The research techniques used in this study are test, verbal protocol (think aloud), and interview. The test has been applied to ten tenth grade students of a public school to get students1 solution processes on the paper. Later on, verbal protocol has been performed with three students of these ten who were of the upper, middle and lower sets in terms of their performance in the test. The aim was to get much deeper data on the students' thinking and reasoning. Finally, interview questions have been asked both these three students and other three from the initial ten students to question the reasons behind their answers to the trigonometry questions. Findings in general suggest that students voluntarily choose to learn instrumentally whose reasons include teachers' and students' preference for the easier option and the anxiety resulting from the external exam pressure.

The participants are 30 mathematics student teachers enrolled in the teacher training program in a state university. Document analysis and semi-structured interviews are the research instruments and inferential & descriptive statistics arc used for the data analysis. The findings suggest that the qualitative and quantitative peer assessments of student teachers were graded differently which results from the difference of perceptions about teaching and different conceptualizations of the teaching qualifications.

After the teaching of the logic unit, an achievement test, a general skills test and the test of logical reasoning were administered to the 80, 9th year high school students. Pearson Moments Correlation coefficient was used for the analysis of the data to determine the relations between the variables. In addition to that to obtain the most suitable regression explaining the students' performances in the logic unit, stepwise multiple regressions analysis was used. At the end of the study, statistically significant relations were found between the students' performance in the logic unit and their logical reasoning skills, their results of the shape recognition test from the general skills battery and their overall performance in the mathematics lesson.

The research uses a case study methodology which follows from the qualitative paradigm. 42 second year pupils from the department of primary mathematics education in 2009-2010 academic year were chosen for the study by using the convenience sampling strategy. Performance Test of Systems of Linear Equations was used to assess of the preservice mathematics teachers’ performances on solving systems of linear equations and Systems of Linear Equations Self-efficacy Test (m=n, m≠n) was developed and used to determine the levels of efficacy. In the analysis of the quantitative qualitative and data, inferential and descriptive statistics were used respectively. While the majority of preservice mathematics teachers showed medium-level performance, more than half of the participants had high-levels of self-efficacy. The presence of a significant positive medium level correlation between performance and self-efficacy is an indicator of the fact that self-efficacy affects performance.

Motivation for learning is important for positive learning outcomes as well as for measured achie... more Motivation for learning is important for positive learning outcomes as well as for measured achievement levels. When students come to our classes, they bring with them learning histories in which we as individual teachers, most likely, did not have an input. Our students do not only bring with them different levels of prerequisite leanings but also different levels of affect for what they will be learning. If we leave their final learning at the mercy of these entry characteristics, a test given the first day before the course will have almost isomorphic results with their achievement levels on the last day. The ones who had ‘it’ on the first day will be the ones who in the future will also have ‘it’, not too different from what the present situation is all over the world. These circumstances will tend to be the case ad infinitum, unless of course, we want to change the situation. This research clearly shows that effective instructional methodologies coupled with cooperative peer interactions not only have an impact on achievement but also on positive attitudes toward one’s learning.

Ancak bilgisayar ortamına aktarılabilen sanal matematiksel modeller ve öğrenme nesnelerinin geliştirilmesi ve kullanılması hususunda maalesef yeni programda yeteri kadar vurgu yapılmamıştır. Çalışmanın veri toplama aracı olan anket içinde değerlendirme özneleri, nesneleri-araçları, değerlendirmenin amaçları, öğretmen adaylarının kendilerini ifade etmekte kullandıkları metaforlar ve öğretmen adaylarının benimsedikleri değerlendirme araç ve yöntemler araştırılmıştır. Geliştirilen anket bir devlet üniversitesindeki orta öğretim matematik ve fen öğretmenliği programlarında kayıtlı toplam 105 öğrenciye uygulanmıştır. Fark istatistikleri için Mann-Whitney testi kullanılmıştır. Veriler bütünsel olarak incelendiğinde matematik ve fen alanlarındaki yapılandırmacılık yorumlarının farklılığının ölçme-değerlendirme algılarına yansımalarının sonucu olarak beklenen farklar kendini özellikle ölçme-değerlendirme araçları üzerinde göstermektedir.
There is an increased interest in finding connections with mathematics and areas outside mathemat... more There is an increased interest in finding connections with mathematics and areas outside mathematics such as hard and soft sciences. This increased interest reflected in many of curriculum reforms that took place during the past few decades including the one in Turkish elementary and secondary mathematics education. Hence we believe that Turkish mathematics teachers should have the skills necessary for coping with the changing requirements of the 'new high school' mathematics'. Since research skills is an important requirement, the aim of the paper was chosen to be to investigate 32 mathematics student teachers' reactions during a series of physics experiment, which involves identification of the variables, measurement process and data analysis. In this case study, multi method approach is used in the study to get rich data for answering research questions. The main data collection tools are physics experiment lab reports. A categorization procedure was used to transform the mainly qualitative data into a statistically analyzable form. Findings indicate that student teachers' overall performances on the experiments were not satisfactory. Transforming formal mathematical knowledge into a physics experiment context was problematic. Main conclusion of the study is that teacher training curriculum currently used should be designed to equip the teachers the skills they need to cope with the changing requirements.

Bir grubu derinlemesine inceleme özelliğinden dolayı çalışma özel durum çalışması niteliği taşımaktadır.40 kişilik bir öğretmen adayı grubu ile iki yada üçer problemden oluşan üç modelleme etkinliği her hafta bir etkinlik olmak üzere üç hafta devam etmiştir. Öğrenciler etkinliklerde önce bireysel olarak çalışıp, ardından grup çalışması yapmışlardır. Etkinliklerdeki bireysel ve grup performansları ayrı değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular öğretmen adaylarının bireysel çalışmalarda başarı düzeylerinin yeterli seviyede olmadığım ve bunun yanında grup çalışmasında daha başarılı sonuçlar elde ettiklerini göstermektedir. Bu sonuç mevcut matematik öğretim ve öğrenim yöntemlerinin öğrencilerin matematiksel modelleme becerisini geliştirmede yetersiz kaldığını göstermekle birlikte, grup çalışmalarında daha başarılı sonuçlar elde edilmesi öğrencilerin gerekli matematik bilgisine sahip olmalarına rağmen bu bilgi ve becerilerini bireysel olarak ortaya koyamadıkları şeklinde yorumlanmıştır.

The data is collected from students' individual and group written responses to the mathematical modelling activity. , videotaped group discussions and classroom observations. 33 teacher candidates participated the study. The data showed that there was difficulty in transition between different modes of mathematical representations which influences the modelling process.

Yeni öğretim programlarında soyut matematiksel kavramların öğrenilebilmesi için somut modellerin ... more Yeni öğretim programlarında soyut matematiksel kavramların öğrenilebilmesi için somut modellerin kullanılması tavsiyesi doğrultusunda matematik derslerinde yardımcı materyal olarak kullanılmak üzere MEB tarafından somut matematik model setleri hazırlatılmış ve sınırlı sayıda da olsa bütün ilköğretim okullarına dağıtılmıştır. Ancak bilgisayar ortamına aktarılabilen sanal matematiksel modeller ve öğrenme nesnelerinin geliştirilmesi ve kullanılması hususunda maalesef yeni programda yeteri kadar vurgu yapılmamıştır. Yeni öğretim programının bilgisayar teknolojileri ile acilen desteklenmesi gerekmektedir. Bu bölümde sanal öğrenme nesnesi kavramı hakkında bilgi verildikten sonra bilgisayar ortamında geliştirilen ve internet ortamında paylaşılan ulusal ve uluslar arası öğrenme nesnelerini (manipulatifleri) içeren platformlar tanıtılacaktır.
Bu çalışmanın amacı öğretmen adaylarının ölçme değerlendirme algılarının ne durumda olduğunun ort... more Bu çalışmanın amacı öğretmen adaylarının ölçme değerlendirme algılarının ne durumda olduğunun ortaya çıkarılması ve matematik ve fen eğitimi öğretmen adaylarının ölçme ve değerlendirme yaklaşımları arasındaki benzerlik ve farklılıkların araştırılmasıdır. Çalışmanın veri toplama aracı olan anket içinde değerlendirme özneleri, nesneleri-araçları, değerlendirmenin amaçları, öğretmen adaylarının kendilerini ifade etmekte kullandıkları metaforlar ve öğretmen adaylarının benimsedikleri değerlendirme araç ve yöntemler araştırılmıştır. Geliştirilen anket bir devlet üniversitesindeki orta öğretim matematik ve fen öğretmenliği programlarında kayıtlı toplam 105 öğrenciye uygulanmıştır. Fark istatistikleri için Mann-Whitney testi kullanılmıştır. Veriler bütünsel olarak incelendiğinde matematik ve fen alanlarındaki yapılandırmacılık yorumlarının farklılığının ölçme-değerlendirme algılarına yansımalarının sonucu olarak beklenen farklar kendini özellikle ölçme-değerlendirme araçları üzerinde göstermektedir.
There is an increased interest in finding connections with mathematics and areas outside mathemat... more There is an increased interest in finding connections with mathematics and areas outside mathematics such as hard and soft sciences. This increased interest reflected in many of curriculum reforms that took place during the past few decades including the one in Turkish elementary and secondary mathematics education. Hence we believe that Turkish mathematics teachers should have the skills necessary for coping with the changing requirements of the 'new high school' mathematics'. Since research skills is an important requirement, the aim of the paper was chosen to be to investigate 32 mathematics student teachers' reactions during a series of physics experiment, which involves identification of the variables, measurement process and data analysis. In this case study, multi method approach is used in the study to get rich data for answering research questions. The main data collection tools are physics experiment lab reports. A categorization procedure was used to transform the mainly qualitative data into a statistically analyzable form. Findings indicate that student teachers' overall performances on the experiments were not satisfactory. Transforming formal mathematical knowledge into a physics experiment context was problematic. Main conclusion of the study is that teacher training curriculum currently used should be designed to equip the teachers the skills they need to cope with the changing requirements.
Bu çalışmada matematik öğretmen adaylarının modelleme etkinliklerinde, bireysel ve grup çalışmala... more Bu çalışmada matematik öğretmen adaylarının modelleme etkinliklerinde, bireysel ve grup çalışmalarında, matematiği ne kadar kullanabildikleri incelenmiştir. Bir grubu derinlemesine inceleme özelliğinden dolayı çalışma özel durum çalışması niteliği taşımaktadır.40 kişilik bir öğretmen adayı grubu ile iki yada üçer problemden oluşan üç modelleme etkinliği her hafta bir etkinlik olmak üzere üç hafta devam etmiştir. Öğrenciler etkinliklerde önce bireysel olarak çalışıp, ardından grup çalışması yapmışlardır. Etkinliklerdeki bireysel ve grup performansları ayrı değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular öğretmen adaylarının bireysel çalışmalarda başarı düzeylerinin yeterli seviyede olmadığım ve bunun yanında grup çalışmasında daha başarılı sonuçlar elde ettiklerini göstermektedir. Bu sonuç mevcut matematik öğretim ve öğrenim yöntemlerinin öğrencilerin matematiksel modelleme becerisini geliştirmede yetersiz kaldığını göstermekle birlikte, grup çalışmalarında daha başarılı sonuçlar elde edilmesi öğrencilerin gerekli matematik bilgisine sahip olmalarına rağmen bu bilgi ve becerilerini bireysel olarak ortaya koyamadıkları şeklinde yorumlanmıştır.
As part of a larger research on pre-service students' mathematical modelling abilities, this stud... more As part of a larger research on pre-service students' mathematical modelling abilities, this study investigates representational fluency and its effect on the modelling process via the cassette problem. The data is collected from students' individual and group written responses to the mathematical modelling activity. , videotaped group discussions and classroom observations. 33 teacher candidates participated the study. The data showed that there was difficulty in transition between different modes of mathematical representations which influences the modelling process.
