And while I'm recommending e-books...

Jo Graham (author of Black Ships, etc.) has an anthology called The Ravens of Falkenau out in e-book form! It's got stories of her characters throughout history and I can't wait to read it :) This one comes in various formats (including epub and Mobi) and you can get it here.

If you haven't read any of Jo's Numinous World books...what's wrong with you? ;) No, seriously, her amazing handling of different time periods and her meticulous historical research make the books amazing.

And, as promised, here is Heroine Addiction in epub and PDF formats.

See, now I've provided you reading for the week. ::polishes nails on chest:: I'm just that good.

Some quick recs of various things

Must go get the sproglet soon, so...

The Immorality of Heaven by Greta Christina. I know I say this every single time I point to one of her posts, but I love this woman's brain so much. Just...yes. I would really love to hear an explanation from someone who is Christian. Can you point out a flaw in her argument?

On a totally different note, I got a much-needed laugh from The Justice League of Cardiff Is a Stupid Name by sam_storyteller. ::dies:: I can't even describe this except to say go read it. Now.

I've also started reading a new blog, which, well, sometimes it makes me very happy. Unfortunately, today is not one of those days, but if you skip past the utterly stupid first post ::eyeroll::, there are some interesting posts about the law and policy and popular culture on The Legal Satyricon. Seriously, though, skip the first post. I mean it, I'm not responsible for any woman whose head explodes upon reading "The Man-Hating Crowd's Blood Lust Strikes Again", okay?

I had more to say, but I gotta run. Maybe a substantive post later.

Links of the day

I have no brain, so you get links.

Like Hemant Mehta of Friendly Atheist, I have a new hero: A 10-year-old with a better grasp of the meaning of America than most adults. I'm sure his parents are very proud of him. I know I would be!

Yay for my county!: Disclaimer proposed for Montgomery anti-abortion clinics.

Blood Ties fic rec: Blood Rites by kittydesade. Henry/Vicki/Mike! Plot! Fun dialogue! Go read this now!

I haven't had a chance to examine this in depth, but some folks here might be interested in perusing and/or editing this Jewish English Distinctive Lexicon. It's a work in progress, so have at it.

Everybody (well, all the atheists, agnostics, and other skeptics on my flist) should watch Mr. Deity. OMG (joke intended) so funny! See the challenges faced by the hapless creator of the universe as he tackles such issues as evolution, Death wanting to quit, and how the heck the trinity thing works.

And my fellow language geeks absolutely must read Fake AP Stylebook. (Where did I get this link? Was it from one of you? If so, please speak up so I can thank you!) Here you can learn such important grammatical rules as Robocop and Batman looked at "each other." Robocop, Batman, and The Orgasmic Slashfic Writer looked at "one another." ::snerk:: I swear, that's just the third item that happened to come up when I went there this morning. Or how about Guerrilla soldiers use unorthodox tactics. Gorilla soldiers are awesome. Useful to know.

And now it's time to take Yael to school and attempt to get myself a doctor's appointment. Avi put his foot down and said he'd come home to babysit, but I had to get an appointment for this cough. He's right. I'm not getting any sleep and cut for minor TMICollapse ) And I'm out of codeine cough syrup and my Advair is expired and no longer helping. Mucinex can only do so much on its own.

Random links and such

I've been tired and working and whatnot, so I've got a bunch of random bookmarks to post about. There is no theme here except Things I Am Interested In.

You should go read "From the Terran Coyote to the Klingon K'Ortar: Tricksters of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants" by taraljc. It makes my little anthropology fangirl heart sing with joy, I tell you. Awesome.

And ninamonkey's "Birthday Quintet" is equally awesome, although in an entirely different way ::grin::. Lovely lovely character vignettes that tugged at my heartstrings.

Look, this is about a vaccine, so you know it's going to go a bit ranty. Cut for those of you tired of hearing me on this subject.Collapse )

::coughs:: Okay, I'm in a bit of A Mood. Can you tell?

You've probably all seen the video of Barney Frank pwning one of those townhall idiots. But just in case, I post a link. I would hate for anyone to miss this.

And in a different vein, Ed Brayton posts a letter titled "An Officer's Experience in our Christian Military," which broke my heart.

Okay, back to working on two Leverage reviews and then getting back to Suddenly Sprockets! work. Arg. I'm so behind it's not even funny. This weekend had better feature lots of work time for me or I'm a gonna cry.

Instarec

Go read Of Two Worlds by yahtzee63. Plotty Spock/Uhura with a special guest star that will delight a number of you. Go! Read and enjoy :)

A few fic recs

I wish I had more for you, but I haven't had much time to read. Here are a few Trek fics that I've had bookmarked for reccing purposes.

Lunch and Other Obscenities by rheanna27: I don't have enough nice things to say about this fic, which has an awesome look at culture shock and friendship and stuff. How can you lose with Uhura&Gaila Academyfic?

In Service by loneraven: Scotty and Bones! Being awesome! Read this right now :)

You'll Get There in the End (It Just Takes a While) by seperis: Okay, this one's definitely not gen. (I know a lot of folks are here for the gen recs, so I thought I'd get that out there.) And it's Kirk/Spock, which I'm not a gigantic fan of. And yet, and yet, the writing is amazing and the slow way you realize what's going on, well, it worked for me.

To the Enterprise: Of Warp Barriers, Captains, and Other Scary Things by karanguni: This just made me say Awwwww :) There is serious cuteness, especially from Chekov.

Love and Mathematics by alldoubtaboutit: This is Chekov/Sulu, but it's really more Chekov being adorable. It's a nice view of the crew and the ship and how everything works there.

One non-Trek rec:
Great Minds by Beatrice-Otter: For Multiverse, I requested Toshiko Sato and Oracle, and here it is and it's fabulous :) These two women should rule the world, I think.

Fic and nonfic recs

Taking a quick break from work for some genfic recs:

Star Trek
It Takes a Village by chaletian. ::giggles:: I love gossipfic :D

Search and Rescue by _seven_crows. Ooooh, plotty genfic with some action. Nice!

second to the right, and straight on til morning by dafnap. Awww, Chekov. Could he be any cuter? I think not.

SGA
Boys' Night Out by penknife. Humor with that perfect touch of angst. Oh, boys.

Oh, and a link to a great piece over at Not Exactly Rocket Science: Darwinius Changes Everything. ::snerk:: Yes! That's exactly right :D

Fic rec and a few other small things

Trekfic rec (gen, thankyewverymuch): A Formal Dance in the Bowling Alley by loneraven. This is adorable and just a perfect view of the ship and its crew.

Randomly, I forgot to mention something that amused me yesterday. I had on NPR and I heard a tragic case of "burying the lede." It was a short news report on an earthquake in Southern California, which failed to mention the magnitude of the earthquake until the very last sentence. Good grief.

Oh, and grammar doesn't matter because we can't be perfect anyway. Or something like that.

My father's having cataract surgery next week. And they still haven't figured out what's wrong with his digestive system. I'm getting a little freaked out by all his health problems so suddenly. My father's been gray-haired and nearly bald as long as I can remember...so when did he get old?

Trek ficrec and such

How to Avoid Kicking Puppies and Other Valuable Lessons in Leadership by sparky77. ::dies laughing:: Hilarious!

Also, I must report the following conversation:

Yael: Fish don't eat worms. That's silly!
Avi: What do they eat, then?
Yael: Bait.
Avi: [facepalm]
Me: [falls off chair, laughing]

Okay, now I must do some work...(and not look for new Trek icons).

Modern Love by penknife...Discworld fic written for lgbtfest. ::loves:: Wonderful stuff.

For the Want of a Goat by roga. Discworld/Passover fic. I...this...::giggles madly:: I have no idea if you'll get it if you're not Jewish, but if you are, you'll love it!

Okay, time to clean up from Yael's painting.

Right? It's so hard to believe she's that big, but she is.
