Ugh. I picked an answer to the first question be my style for this job (like, two years ago) but now I hate it and think it's icky. Wah.

For want of an "e"...

Today, I drove down the road behind a truck that had painted on the back the following statement:

The beatings will continue until moral improves.

I dunno about you, but that sounds like a bad parenting strategy, rather than something business-related. ::coughs:: Who says spelling isn't important?

Yael is being an absolute beast this afternoon. I'm starting to dread the two weeks between school and camp. ::wince:: I'll try and keep us busy, but I swear, if she flings herself on top of Barak one more time, I cannot be responsible for my actions. Arrrr. She's breaking down in tears at the drop of a hat and pulling my hair and other such fun behaviors. She's probably behaving like that because Barak is having an eating day, and he's been attached to my boob most of the day, falling asleep between meals with his hand down my shirt, presumably to be sure the boob doesn't disappear while he's sleeping.

I've been kind of depressed all day, thinking about my (late) website and all the paying work I have to do and how it feels like everything is endless. It's sunny and pretty out, so that helped a bit. Yael and I went outside to play for a while and that was nice, until she got cranky again. Barak even lay on a blanket on the grass for a while, looking around at the trees with apparent interest.

I did manage to finish one Small Gov't Agency project this morning and my client hasn't come back with any problems yet, so I'm hoping I did everything right. I must do Suddenly Sprockets! work tonight before I forget what I need to do!

Help?

Yes, yes, I'm spammy mcspammyperson today. So sue me. But this is important, because my Google fu has failed me. :(

Which phrase is correct?

a font of learning
27(50.0%)
a fount of learning
17(31.5%)
I have absolutely no idea
10(18.5%)

They both look wrong. Argl.

(Note to self: ch. 10, p. 19)

Sometimes Merriam-Webster lets me down

So, whadda ya think?

People who live together but aren't married...are they cohabitators, cohabitants, or cohabitors? (And don't even think about saying "They're people who live together but aren't married" because then I will have to shoot you.)

And what are they doing? Is it cohabiting or cohabitating?

Arg. I have to go back through this book, because I have a sinking feeling that the authors have been using different terms and I'm going to have to fix that. ::tries not to think about ten chapters and who knows how many figures and tables::

Yay!

My hubby is my hero! I've just been given two links to professional book/journal publishers that use freelancers (and that publish significant amounts of social science stuff), but to get on their lists, I've got to pass their copyediting tests. And, of course, one press uses Chicago style (which I don't use much) and the other uses Chicago or APA (which I know fairly well). So, I've got bone up on APA (because I'd probably rather work using that), and read Chicago, and then do both tests.

So Avi has taken Yael to shul with him this morning, thus giving me hours of time to work! I'm off to take a quick shower and then back to studying. My goal is to have taken at least one test, if not both, before we go to a birthday party late this afternoon.

Those of you who answered my question from yesterday, thank you very much, and I will get back to you once I'm done running around like a chicken with my head cut off. I appreciate your thoughtful answers and I don't want to dash off a quick response while I'm thinking of other things.

(For those of you who might know them, the two presses are Sage Publications and Rowman & Littlefield, who own various presses, including AltaMira, which specializes in anthropology, archaeology, museum studies...)

Stuff

I am now officially in love with thefourthvine for writing this hilarious rant about punctuation and writing and sex scenes and other such vitally important things :) She's starting a new religion and damn if I don't plan to join up, my usual feelings about religion notwithstanding...

(Thanks to kalimyre for the link.)

In other news, while we were on vacation, my darling husband whom I love very much bought me an entire flat of peach juice. ::happy sigh:: I have two dozen cans of peach juice. I am a lucky lucky woman.

Of course, I'd feel luckier if I weren't still slightly sick. I mean, I'm much much better, but I'm still weak and unable to eat much. Even the Slimfast I just drank is sitting rather uneasily on my stomach. I've eaten so little in the past few days hat I'm down to 121 lbs. Egads. The last time I weighed that little I was an undergrad. Uh, I graduated in 1993, in case you didn't know.

Anyway, I'm not sure why I'm still awake. Yael woke up, I fed her, and she went right back to sleep, but I'm pretty much wide awake. I think I'm going to finish typing this, then just go lie down next to Avi. Maybe I'll bring my iPod and just listen to music and snuggle with him.

Language funnies and such

I've been getting the World Wide Words newsletter for a while, and it usually has some interesting etymology and such. But of course, my favorite section is "Sic!" in which various highly amusing misuses of language appear. For some reason, this week's seemed particularly amusing, especially the first item.

Cut away for those who don't careCollapse )

Not an outrageously eventful weekend. Partying and breastfeeding. But not at the same time. Sorry.Collapse )

This week will be doctor-filled. Tomorrow morning my father is taking me to get a flu shot! Turns out my parent's doctor has some and he's willing to give one to me. Then Wednesday I have an OB appointment and psychotherapy (yay!). Thursday I'm off to the dentist so they can point out that my gums are inflamed. Uh-huh, I know. I'm pregnant, in case the large belly didn't clue you in. Pregnant women have inflamed gums no matter how much they brush and floss. ::rolls eyes::

If I'm organized, tomorrow I'll also have my father take me to pick up my terbutaline prescription and drop off at least an envelope at the post office. I want to send a package, but I don't think I have the packing materials ready. Urg.
::snerk:: Co-worker Deb just sent me this handy link to a punctuation guide for all of us. Trust me, even if you're no Ms. Grammatica, this is a punctuation guide that will amuse you come in handy on bad days.

Otherwise, not much else to say. I've been typing up recipes and e-mailing with various co-workers. I'm still feeling bad that I can't tell everyone I'm not coming back after maternity leave, because they're planning for my eventual return. ::wince::

I spent way too much time last night trying to scan in a few panels from The Legion for scans_daily, but my scanner crashed every time I tried to increase the resolution or image size. ::growls:: It wasn't anything important, just something that amused me.

See, for some reason I've found the Legion of Superheroes to be remarkably unslashy. (Note: This is neither a good nor a bad thing. Just an observation.) The one exception is Brainiac 5 and Invisible Kid, which is why I was vastly amused to encounter the issue where Invisible Kid goes through a boom tube after the villains; when Brainiac catches up with him, he grabs him and kisses his cheek.

::snicker:: It's an adorable little bit and startled Invisible Kid grins and says he knew Brainiac wouldn't let him down. Awww!

Anyway, I've finished reading all the post-boot Legion issues mscongeniality loaned me. Now I can't wait until the new reboot starts so I can buy more :) I've definitely gotten attached to these characters and I hope I'll enjoy the new versions as well. (And as long as I get my Brainiac 5, nobody will get hurt.)

I've spent too much time at the computer today and my head is starting to hurt. (The lighting in this room sucks rocks.) I'm going to go sit in the recliner for a while.

The world still exists!

I know this isn't exactly a brilliant insight to the rest of you. But, unlike me, you've probably been somewhere other than the hospital or doctor's offices in the past few weeks.

So, a hearty thank you to penknife and artaxastra and their adorable VSP for taking me on a field trip to the mall. We have comicses, yes we do, and even underwear that fits under pregnant bellies. And I got to eat somewhere other than my kitchen table. Oh bliss! Guys, thanks so much for your willingness to wheel me around the mall, that really helped my sanity.

In other good news, both my OB and the high-risk specialist are very pleased with the sonograms they did yesterday and they think that the bed rest and the drugs are really working. If I go on like this, they don't see any reason why I wouldn't make it to full term. That's so great to hear, because up until now I've been resting and taking drugs and still having problems. I can handle the bed rest better knowing that it's making a substantive difference.

Now I'm going to repair to my recliner and read my comics and maybe even take a nap. ::yawns:: I didn't sleep well at all last night and I might as well take advantage of the bed rest to, well, rest.

Oh grife (yes, I've been reading too much Legion), I just got an e-mail from boss P looking for info on how much maternity leave I get so she can figure out when I'll be back. ::feels guilty:: Arg, I feel so awful not just saying "I'm not coming back after the baby's born" but Avi's right, it's not a good idea to say so now. I mean, I don't think they can take away my short-term disability, but...arg. ::still feels guilty::

Definitely time for comics and nap. Just sitting in a wheelchair was tiring!

Oh wait, before I sign off, I must tell a Ms. Grammatica story from yesterday. So, I'm filling out the paperwork at the perinatalogist's office. You know, the usual stuff, insurance info, demographics, etc. Well, I was very pleased to see that they didn't ask for information about my husband, but rather spouse or partner. Yay for blue states!

However, I had to edit the form before I could finish filling it out, because it had two section headings: "Patient Information" and "Spouses/Partners Information." Now, obviously they don't mean that I have more than one spouse or partner (that would be pretty darn enlightened even for a blue state). They meant information about my spouse or partner, so I had to put in the appropriate apostrophes because it was making my right eye twitch in pain.

This time I'm really leaving the computer, I swear. My recliner is calling my name.
