As we mourn the loss of Majel Barrett Roddenberry, I'm reminded of what she and her husband accomplished with Star Trek. Okay, Gene didn't succeed in getting a woman as first officer (although darn it, he tried and he gets points for that), but he managed to get past the network a bridge with a bunch o' nonwhite people on it! And numerous episodes that bluntly denounced things like racism! For the time that was practically declaring a revolution.
Sure, Trek isn't perfect and I don't think you'll find a rational fan who claims it is. Heck, AFAIK, Roddenberry himself wanted to push things farther. I think he sort of assumed that he was creating a starting point. And Trek did its best, giving us a female captain and a black captain. And that was good.
And some genre shows have tried to keep that going, despite what I'm sure is great pressure from networks and advertisers to stay all straight white male all the time. But really, how much progress have we made past Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, and Chapel? Not as much as we should, that's for sure.
I mean, I love the Stargates, okay? But anyone who thinks it's coincidence that Teyla, Teal'c, and Ronon are non-Terrans...well, your naivete is almost endearing. (And I'm not even going to touch comics and how badly they've dealt with women and characters of color. ::wince::)
IMNSHO, the show that's done the best job of picking up where Trek left off is Eureka, with interesting and important female characters and CoC. Anybody else have a vote for a show that's going (or that went) above and beyond?
(Obviously Avatar went way above and beyond, what with everyone being nonwhite and having actual lives and cultures. I don't know if I want to compare cartoons here. ::shrug::)
I continue to love this show more than is entirely healthy. I'd offer to have its babies if a) I weren't already pregnant and b) I didn't hate being pregnant so much ;)
Anyway, I'm typing this halfway through because Rachel called and Avi's stuck on the phone with her, so I've got the ep on pause. ::chews fingernails:: I'm gonna hang up on her in about ten seconds, I swear. ::chews fingernails more::
Avi watched this week's Eureka ep last night, so I ended up watching it again. Not exactly a hardship :D On the nonspoilery front, I'd like to note that I officially give up on shipping only Jack/Allison. ::throws hands in the air:: My ships are now: Jack/Allison, Allison/Nathan, Nathan/Jack, and Jack/Henry. Because the writers love us and give us wonderful things.
In my mental disarray, I forgot that Eureka was tonight. ::scowls at the universe:: I've already set the DVR to record it at some middle of the night time, so we'll probably get to watch tomorrow, but I am peeved. I could have used a good dose of the show right now, to dilute my cranky.
::stamps feet in immature fashion::
Hmmph.
Today was a waste, anyway. I got a little work done (through my mental fog) while Yael was in camp, then we shlepped back up to Columbia, to retrieve her beloved Blue Baby, who'd been left at my parent's house. Then we came home and bummed around for a bit, then we went to my in-law's for a few hours.
THANK YOU! I've gone to services at Issac Agree before and they were both welcoming and a lot of fun. There is a mix of races there, as well. Again, thank you for letting me know all this!
