Sunday – Photos + Meet&Greets<\/b><\/span> + <\/b><\/span>City Walk <\/b><\/span>

Sunday was maybe the day I’d been expecting more anxiously. It was infact the day of the City Walk and Meet&Greet. But I’ll get to those later, because the day actually started with another photo session. The photos were taken on stage, in the conference room, so for a while we were all able to see the actors take photos also with other people. It was a very funny moment, because it was the session for photos not only with the cast but also with several combinations of actors. So one moment it would be Scott&Peter, the next Scott&Randy, then Randy&Hal and so on… Whenever there was a change of actors on stage, they would joke about it, faking to be very tired of doing back and forth and getting confused and things like that. I really loved to see them joking like that. Personally, I took a photo with Randy&Sharon, one with Peter&Scott and one with the entire cast. The only bad side of this session was that because there were a lot of things to do in the day, some of which had been postponed from the day before, the organizers were quite rude in wanting things to be done really fast. When I went to take the picture with Scott and Peter, I clearly heard Peter say “there’s barely time for saying hello”. I didn’t like that. I didn’t demand a lot of time with the actors, I understand we needed to be fast, but we really could only get up on stage super fast, go to the actors, put our feet on the signs on the stage, smile and go away like a killer was after us! But at least everyone got their pictures taken, even if part of the photos had to be again postponed to the late evening.

After the photo session, it was time for the Meet&Greets. I was afraid I’d have to do them on my own, with no other people I knew, but I was lucky and I had Steffi and Pam with me for almost all of them. Only for Randy&Sharon I was on my own, but fortunately there was another Italian girl I had met during the convention, so there was a familiar face.
My first Meet&Greet was with Hal, Robert and Harris. I have to say it was one of the highlights of the convention. I’ve always liked the little family Michael, Ben and Hunter formed on the show, but I’ve never been such a super fan. But it was a joy to listen to them during the Meet&Greet. We were just around 20 people and it was small and comfortable and all of the three actors still remembers clearly their QAF times. They were asked questions about their more important scenes and they talked about the scene in which Michael threatens Ben with the siringe and about the scene in which Hunter tells Ben and Michael about his past with his mother. They told us for that scene in particular, they started pushing each other and getting into each other faces to get into the right mood for such a difficult moment.
Hal said he lived in Chinatown while filming the show because when QAF started he didn’t know if it would work so he wanted to at least use the time to learn the language. He said since he was passionate about Chinese stuff, he was sometimes proposed shirts for Michael with Chinese signs and stuff like that but he thought that was so not Michael. About that, he said whenever he had to choose an outfit for Michael, he chose the one he liked the least, because Michael had bad fashion sense!
Harris and Hal were asked about their music. Hal said the album of his band is being released by a label and it will be available around the world. He was asked if he would do a tour abroad and he said he has a show coming up so for now he won’t be able to go around the world but he would love to do it one day.
Harris said his music is available on his facebook page but he also said he does music because he likes it while he considers acting his real profession. And he was really nice and said if someone wants his music, you can even contact him and he’ll send the CD for free.
I really loved to see the three of them interact, because it made clear to me that they weren’t a family only on the screen but that they also formed a real strong bond in real life too. Robert was in the middle of Hal and Harris and at one point he put his hand on Harris’ shoulder and it really seemed like a father and son moment. He said he was proud of seeing Harris all grown up and bulked up.
The second Meet&Greet I had was with Randy&Sharon. I didn’t have the courage to ask any question. I think we all felt a little uneasy in front of them, especially at first. As I said before, we were too much in awe, I think. But there were questions.
Someone who had been at the press conference said all the actors there said they would say yes to a QAF movie if the script was good. This person asked Randy and Sharon about it. Sharon gave a quick yes while Randy seemed more restrained. He did say too that he would say yes for a good script, but he also said that very often sequels of something that’s finished, don’t meet the expectations and end up ruining the whole thing. He said, wouldn’t it be better not to have it at all, if it’s only going to be disappointing? Which I have to agree with. He was asked about the green socks and he said he has lots of them and he likes them. Someone suggested him a place to buy more socks but he said he’s ok for now lol he was asked if he’ll be in Stockbridge this summer and he said no. They were both asked about auditioning, if they still have to do it. I think Sharon said she isn’t auditioning for theatre while she has to go and read for TV. Randy said he’s not Sharon Gless so he always has to audition lol They both said they hate auditioning. Randy said sometimes he worries the people that cast don’t want to like him, they think he’s wrong and that makes auditioning even more difficult. He said you cannot go on and try to play the role as you think the people in charge want you to but you have instead to go and play the role as you feel like. He was asked how long it takes him to learn a script for a play and I’m pretty sure he said a couple of weeks. I also think he said it’s when he starts reharsing that he really gets the script down to full memory. Someone asked him about his role as Lucky in Waiting For Godot. He said there was a very long speech, pages long (I forgot how many) and it was difficult to learn at first because it didn’t even make sense. Someone asked if he still remembers it and he took and started reciting it very quicly! So yes, he does remember it!
They talked about their first scene together which was also Sharon’s first scene on the show. She remembered that’s when she first called him “Sunshine”.
Sharon was asked about stripping naked for her play “A round heeled woman”. She said it was not easy at all, of course, because she’s not a young woman anymore and there was embarrassment in doing it.
I think it’s during this Meet&Greet (I might get confused with the panel but I don’t think so), that she was asked about the dildos scenes with Peter and Scott in which Emmett and Ted are teaching Debbie how to give a good blowjob. She said her husband never went on set during QAF but he picked that day to go for the first time!
At the end of the Meet&Greet, Sharon and Randy were given the books fans put together with their contributions and they were touched by it.

Next was the Meet&Greet with Peter&Scott. When we got into the room, I couldn’t see Peter because he was lying down faking to sleep! It was really cute. The two of them were very funny, as usual. They talked about doing background voices for scenes in which they weren’t the main part and how the first person that used to go recording those voices could pick the subject, which brought to some funny background talks! They said to listen in particular to Emmett and Ted in the scene in which they go with Brian and Mel to stop Lindsay from marrying the French guy. They said the first to record, I don’t remember if Peter or Scott, said the rabbit soup was good and the other went to record and replied “you’re not raising rabbits in the apartment” Something like that.
Then they talked about the period of Ted’s addiction to crystal. Peter said that storyline is for him as much about Ted and it is about Emmett. He also shared something of his private life, because he said he knows it’s not easy to give up on someone you love to save yourself, because he went through something similar a few years back, when he had to leave a guy he loved but that was addicted to drugs.
They were asked who’s the funniest guy in the cast besides the usual, themselves and Hal. Peter said we would never imagine it and probably we’ll never see it, but Randy is a pretty funny guy.
During this Meet&Greet they were given the books fans made for every actor, one for each of them. And Scott was also given the one that was made for Gale and he was asked to deliver it, which he said he will do.

The last Meet&Greet was with Michelle and Thea and that’s when I finally found the courage to ask a question. I asked them about their characters and their different ways to handle the situation with their children and their father. While for Mel it was a big deal to have rights to Gus, Lindsay accepted easily to let Michael keep his. I asked if the difference was all in the fact Mel and Brian had a difficult relationship. Michelle said that Mel is a lawyer and as such she knows the law and what can happen and she wants to be covered. But she also said that the relationship with Brian and the fact they have to share Lindsay, is a factor. But then I asked her if she thinks it would have been different with another man and Michelle said that she doesn’t think so, Mel would have still wanted the rights.
Thea talked about Lindsay’s journey of getting free from her family and the way she was raised and her fear of bisexuality. From the way she talked, it’s clear Thea believes and portrayed Lindsay as a bisexual woman. She talked also about Lindsay’s relationship with Brian. I think she said one of the reasons why Lindsay loves Brian so much is that she’d like to be a little like him, less worried about what people might think about her and her sexuality.
They were asked if they think Mel and Lindsay have or will go back to Pittsburgh. Michelle said it’s difficult for her to imagine that they might want to leave a place like Canada, which is a lot more friendly to gay people. Thea instead said she definitely thinks they will be back in the US when they’re ready. They were asked if leaving Pittburgh like that was like giving up the fight and they said it does feel like that, a little. But they also said there are different ways to fight and also times to do it and times to take a step back. Thea said Lindsay and Mel needed to get away for a while to focus on their family and find a new balance.
They were asked when they decided to become actors. Michelle said it was when she was little and saw Lauren Bacall on TV. Thea said it was when she made a play at school when she was a kid. I think maybe it was Christmas Carol.
They both talked again about the fight for equality. Michelle once again got very emotional about it. She said it’s hard to fight now and leave in the US and see certain things, but that she believes in her country and in a better future.



City Walk + Lunch<\/b><\/span>

After the Meet&Greets, it was time for the CityWalk. We weren’t many people, I think maybe 20? We left the place of the convention and reached by walk a pub where were were supposed to have lunch with Randy and Sharon. When we got there, we saw there were two long tables and two round tables set. The round tables, smaller, were a little higher. It was clear those were for the actors. I sat on the smaller of the long tables. When Randy and Sharon arrived, they sat and the person from the organization that took care of Randy during the convention was sitting between our table and Randy, preventing us to have a clear view. I thought that sucked and was disappointed but it didn’t last long because after a few minutes both Randy and Sharon left their tables and sat with us, one for each table of fans. Randy sat at my table first. He was very nice and sweet. We could order between two different places and I think he hadn’t realized what he had ordered because when he told us his plate and we told him it was liver, he made a surprised and disgusted face lol he didn’t eat much of it infact. During the time at my table he talked about architecture and modern art. Oh, he drank a Coach (I think that’s a beer?) and was surprised it was only him and another person drinking it.
The waiter served us before Randy, which I found all kind of wrongs, but Randy didn’t say anything about it.
After a while he and Sharon switched places and that’s when Sharon came to my table and talked about Gale. Since I’ve already talked about this in another entry, I’ll make it quick. Gale absolutely wanted to come and nobody should think differently. He was also willing to do a video conference but that was not possible because of costs. The role he got was defined by Sharon as “huge” (quoting literally here). She also told us that she thought for a while that she would have to miss the convention too because in this period she’s filming her series, Burn Notice. She said when she asked the producers for the weekend off, they told her she could come to Cologne but then they would sue her. But she and we were lucky because when she got the script for the episodes being filmed in these days, her character was not in them, which made it possible for her to attend the convention.
After lunch, we walked all together to the Cathedral, to visit it. I stayed as close to Randy as possible :P I was right behind him so I can confirm he has a great ass in person too! I don’t think anyone took photos until we were inside the Cathedral. While I took photos of the place, I also managed to sneak a couple of pics of Randy and Sharon too. But they’re mostly from behind. I didn’t want to annoy them getting too close to them to get a good picture or even ask them.

Flashmob<\/b><\/span>

After that, we split. Sharon and Randy went I don’t know where, while we fans went to join the flashmob for AIDS. There, I saw Scott and Thea and Harris, who joined us. Scott was eating ice cream and Harris was kind enough to let me have a picture with him. It was a really nice moment, I loved to be there with all of the people and the actors for a good cause.

Then we walked back to the Hotel of the convention for the last part of the event.



Saying Goodbye<\/b><\/span>

Once back at the conference room, there was another short photo session with mixed combinations of the cast.

The last panel of the convention, with all of the actors back on stage together, was the most moving, touching moment of the event. I think in the end there was no dry eye in the house. Robert, Sharon, Michelle in particular were visibly moved.
There was time for a question for each one of them but I don’t remember them all. I remember the guy who was chosen to ask the question to Randy called him Justin and then asked him something about the gay boys in Cologne! What an embarrassment for everyone in the room! I wish they had let someone else ask a question after that, because that one was seriously stupid!
Sharon was asked what lesson she could give us, since Debbie always gave many on the show. She told us to dream big because dreams do come true.
Then the actors all said some last words about what they were taking home of this convention. The two speeches that most hit me were Robert’s and Randy’s. Robert said that he has worked after QAF but nothing has even come close to give him the sense of fulfillment he got from doing QAF. Randy said he was amazed by how people told him they were changed by one of his scenes that he doesn’t even remember. He said he usually does his work and moves on and doesn’t dwell too much on things, on his roles, because that would make him too neurotic. But he said that if even one person was changed or helped by his work, that would justify his entire life. He also said that he felt guilty that sometimes he hasn’t understood the passion that people has for his work. And that we, the fans, are a gift to him and the other actors and that our existence justifies the fact that they create.
Sharon once again mentioned Gale and repeated to everyone that Gale wanted to be there. She said she hoped to bring home some of our love for him because it was felt. She said Gale was missed and that he was such a major part of the show and the cast. At her speech, we all applauded and stood up and cheered and that went on for a while and Scott took a picture of it that he sent to Gale with his phone.
After that, it was the end. They got up and we applauded and cheered them and there was so much emotion in the room. People, both fans and actors, tearing up and applauding each other. It was long and heartfelt and the actors left but then came back again and another applause began, just as long and loud as the first one. And Scott was his usual amazing self and came down the stage and shook the ends of all the people in the first row.

And that’s it. That was the end of the convention, at least the part with the actors. After that, it was time to say goodbye to some of the friends I met there, like Steffi and Susi. And tears, it was definitely time for tears.
Later that night Pamela, Elisa and I had dinner together and spent a lot of time talking about the show and fanfictions and Gale&Randy and everything Queer As Folk related, until it was time to go to bed and then get up the morning after to leave.

In conclusion, what can I say? I’ve met celebrities before, I went on the set of a TV show I used to love, I made trips and vacations. But this weekend, this event, beat everything else. That’s because Queer As Folk really means something to me. I strongly believe in equality and I appreciate the message the show tried to give and the amazing work the actors did. And I love this bunch of people that form the QAF fandom. We’re not perfect, we have our share of fights and dramas, but when it comes to the things that really count, like fighting for a world equal for everyone, we’re all on the same page.
I’ve brought back a lot of things from this convention. One is a big, strong sense of belonging, which I’ve never felt so strong in my life before. But the main thing I’ve brought with me from Cologne is what Michelle said, repeatedly. She was asked why she fights so hard for equality when she considers herself a straight woman so theoretically gay rights or lack thereof do not affect her. She said “because it’s fucking right”. Fighting for equality isn’t about having a gay friend or relative or being gay yourself. It’s about fighting for what is right.

This was one of the most beautiful and fulfilling experiences of my life. And to those who might think “it’s just a convention for a TV show”, I can only say that Queer As Folk isn’t just “some” show. It’s so much more than that. Queer As Folk is a TV show but it also stands for fighting for what’s right; hoping for a better world for everyone; being worthy no matter who you are and what you do and what you love.
I’ve met celebrities in the past, I’ve followed TV shows, I’ve met fans. But never before I’ve felt like I belonged as I did during this weekend.

The Waiting<\/span><\/b>

The QAF convention adventure didn’t begin for me this past weekend. It started instead a long while ago, last summer I think it was, when word first came out of someone who was trying to make a QAF convention happen. I remember the skepticism, the doubts, the feeling of “it’ll never happen”. But plans went forward and back in December 2011 I bought my tickets for the convention and all the activities I wanted to do during its course. This is what I ended up buying and doing:

I spent a lot of money on this convention, as you can guess from all that. But it was damn worth it. I was lucky that my family helped. Since the convention was announced a long while ago, I was able to ask for my family to give me things convention-related for Christmas and my birthday, which helped a lot making all this possible for me.



Getting to Cologne<\/b><\/span>

I left for Cologne on Thursday the 7th, one day before the convention started. I slept one night there alone in a very nice apartament that was found and booked by my dear friend Pamela. When the convention was announced, I was afraid I’d have to go alone and that thought scared me a lot. I’m a very shy person, so the thought of being among so many people on my own and doing everything by myself was worrisome. But here comes Pamela. I had been knowing her for a while on LJ but we had never met. She was kind enough to let me join her and a friend of hers, Elisa, so that I wouldn’t be alone. At first I was a little scared about meeting them: I was afraid they wouldn’t like me, they would find me annoying or boring or both. But my worries were useless: both Pam and Elisa were amazing, really great girls that made me feel at ease since the very first moment we spent together. And later, our little group was also joined by Steffi, whom I’ve known for years through a QAF forum, and a friend of hers, Susie. The 5 of us spent most of the convention together and being with them, talking about QAF, sharing our passion for this or that character, our love for this or that fiction, was as much a big part of the convention as meeting the actors.



Accreditation<\/b><\/span>

On Friday there was the first appointment with convention’s events: the accreditation of our tickets. It was supposed to be from 1:00 pm to 18:00 pm. Before hand, I really thought we’d get there very soon and be done with it very fast. Boy, was I wrong! It seems there were problems with the stystem and all the changes that had to be done about activies with Gale made it so that the accreditation process lasted way too long! We were in line for hours and it was too hot in there and it was frustrating, but it was also when I met Steffi for the first time and talked with people that I didn’t even know and realized that in spite of my being super shy, being among the QAF fans wasn’t hard at all.
The result of the long accreditation process was that we had very little time to get ready for the Rise’n Shine party that took place Friday night. That would be the first time we’d meet the actors, so I guess in one way, the fact we were in line for so long to be accredited didn’t give me the chance to think about it too much and to get overwhelmed at the mere thought.

The Rise’nShine party at Vanity Pub<\/b><\/span>

The party on Friday took place at a pub called Vanity. It wasn’t very big and there weren’t many seats, even though my Diner’s ticket actually said I’d have preferred seating that night. In truth, there were many seats for 10 people in total! It sucked, but I got over it quickly, especially when the actors started coming! Thanks to the Diner’s Ticket being the second more expensive, I got to spend the night in a section of the pub right next to the VIP one, where the actors were. When they started coming into the pub, one at a time, I was right at the entrance of the VIP section, so I had perfect view of all of them. It was surreal to see them so close to me! The first to arrive was Hal, I’m pretty sure. Now Hal has never been my favorite and I’ve never found him more than cute. But boy, my first reaction was “HOT!”. I’m not kidding. He had on black sunglasses and he looked very cool. After him, one by one all actors came and when it was time for Randy, it was the high point of the night for me. Gale’s always been my favorite among the cast, but Randy is a close second. Seeing him upclose was special. He’s beautiful, as you can imagine. Even more than on TV or pictures. He has a fantastic smile that only gains points when seen so damn close. Once all the actors were in their VIP section, we realized that they were going to be a little far away from us, because their seats and the stage for performances were on the other side of the pub. That sucked but only for a short while, because soon all of them came to our side to greet us and spend a few minutes with us. They danced in front of us, let some fans hug them, pose for pictures. Robert and Peter especially kept dancing and being all crazy, while Scott soaked up the love of the fans and kept letting them put their hands on him, kissing him and hugging him. Thea and Michelle came together and danced a little, as you can see from the photos below. They’re both so damn beautiful! Randy was more “calm”. He came and sat there for a little while and I managed to take a picture of him with his legs under him that I’m proud of :P
For being the first meeting with all of them, it was fantastic. I managed to see them all up close and to take several pics. The first to leave was Sharon, I think, while the last two were Randy and Harris, who we renamed party boys because of that ;)

Autographs, Photo Session and Panels<\/b><\/span>

On Saturday, Pam, Elisa and I woke up very early, 6:30 am, because we had a date with Steffi and Susi to have breakfast together at 7:30. As I said, being with friends was as much a part of the convention as the rest, and this little ritual of having breakfast together (we did it on Sunday too) was really nice for me.
After that, we went to the Hotel where the convention took place. We were there before the time it was supposed to start, because if there was any line, we wanted to be in the front. Here there were more problems with the organization, I think, because we were let inside the conference room late, after another long wait and line. And then it was finally time to see the actors all together on stage! The first to be introduced was Scott, who was recognized as the one that helped made the convention possible. Then Peter and all the others, with Randy and Sharon for last. I was lucky that Randy was on the side of the room in which I was sitting. I was in the 4th row, I think, so I had a great view of him and took several pictures. I think at this point there was maybe a Q&A? Sorry, details are getting confused between the days!

Anyway, after this introduction, it was time for the authograph session, which was very long. You’d think it wouldn’t take a lot of time to sign a piece of paper and I would agree with you, but the fact is that the actors were really awesome and spent a few minutes with all of us, asking where we were from and thanking us and things like that, while signing photos for us. It was really really nice. It’s also the first time I got to see them in no hurry and in a calm setting. I thanked all of them for coming. I told Thea how much I love her and that I think she’s very classy and elegant and graceful and she was really nice in thanking me. I made sure to tell Scott he’s not just a great actor but a wonderful man too and I thanked him for making the convention possible. I told Peter he’s a fantastic dancer and he said he’s proud of it. Michelle told me I have a nice name and asked him which part of Italy I come from. I said not far from Rome, because I doubt she’d know my town. She said she was there once and it’s a romantic town to which I asked her if she’s been in Venice, which is even more romantic. She said all of Italy is romantic lol I was a little tongue tied with Randy and Sharon, because I have so much respect for them. I was really in awe, being so close. Randy signed the photos for me and see those little sticks? He started doing those and then it seemed like he didn’t know anymore what to do with them! It was quite funny for me to see.

After we were done with the autographs, a bunch of us went to have lunch together at a nice restaurant.

Later it was time for the panels and photo session to begin. The first to take photos was Randy and I had one with him so to get in line for it I lost the first two panels: Scott&Peter and Hal&Robert&Harris. I was pissed about that, because before the convention we were told that even during the photo sessions we would have been able to at least listen to the panels. But it wasn’t so. But at least I got my photo with Randy! He was really nice when it was my turn, said hello and I think he passed my bag to the guy in charge of keeping bags while we fans took the pics. Randy was beautiful as the sun, of course. Somehow though, my photo with Randy was missing when I went to collect it with the others. But they said they’ll send it to me so I’m gonna have to wait!
After that, I went back to the conference room to follow the panels. The first I could watch was the Homophobia one. Peter, Michelle and Robert were present. It was really interesting to listen to the things they had to say. Michelle and Peter in particular talked about their own experiences in fighting for gay rights and against homophobia. Robert shared a story from his own experience in coming out, which was very touching to hear. He told us of when he came out to his mother and she said something among the lines it would have been better if he’d taken a rifle to his head” or her head. I’m sorry I couldn’t understand exactly. But anyway, the point is that it seems his mother’s first reaction wasn’t good at all. That was really touching to hear from him and I was really sorry for him. Michelle got chocked up more than once during the panel and really, she cried several times during the convention, whenever we talked about gay rights and equality. She’s really a remarkable woman.

After the panel about homophobia, it was the time for a panel with Thea and Michelle. They talked about their characters and again about the fight for equality.

After them, it was time for the last panel of the day, the one with Randy&Sharon. This is when Gale’s name was mentioned for the first time. I’ve already dedicated an entry to him, so I won’t repeat myself too much. Sharon started with a joke about being Gale Harold, which made everyone laugh and I think also cut the tension. It seemed like up until she spoke his name, everyone, hosts, actors, fans, were scared of even mentioning him. But we know Sharon has bigger balls than everyone else ;)
Then they talked about their characters. Sharon told us about how she imagined that Debbie used to be a girl that always wanted to have her own beauty salon but had to give that dream up because she got pregnant and had to work to support herself and Michael, with no help from anyone.
Randy was asked how he sees Justin today. He said he sees him still in NYC and that as a consequence of that the relationship with Brian would have changed. Of course, that caused some noise in the room lol but he repeated “changed” and not over. He said he likes to think Justin is still in NYC because being an artist himself, he likes to think Justin is still following that dream and using his talent.

After this last panel, the first day was over and it was time for the Babylon party!



The Babylon Party at Gallery<\/b><\/span>

The party on Saturday night took place in a club called Gallery. From the photos I had seen on the official site (see below), it seemed nice and big. According to my Diner’s ticket, I had “guaranteed seating and entering the VIP section”. But here’s when the organization failed again. When we got inside (after some polemics with the people in charge outside because they were letting people with less expensive tickets get inside first), I went to this supposed section for my ticket and found out that it was very small and with just 3 or 4 seats! And it was not the VIP section. Anger came out here. I tried to talk with one of the organizers but I soon realized he didn’t have any idea of what the place looked like before getting there that night, because he tried to bring me to the place where I should have been seating and when he saw what it looked like, he put his hands in his hair!
As beginning of the night, it really wasn’t that good! You have to keep in mind that among lines and walks, I was already pretty tired and not having the chance to seat comfortable sucked big times. Fortunately, I could find a seat in the “common” section. The place was really small. It was on multiple floors, but the dancing small wasn’t big enough for all the people there. Things got a lot better when the actors arrived. Sharon, Thea and Hal were missing, but all the others were there. And 4 of them in particular, Robert, Michelle, Scott and Peter, saved the night for everyone. They came out of the VIP section and danced where we could all see them! It was fantastic! Robert, Michelle and Peter are all amazing dancers and it was a joy to see them. Scott is a funny dancer, but he was there and that’s what counted. I took a lot of photos there. I hoped Randy would come out and dance too, but the day after he said it was too chaotic.
I danced too, with Pam and the other friends. One moment I was resting a little, sitting on the side, but then Proud started and I immediately ran to dance with everyone else. It was surreal to be dancing on QAF music.
I think we left around 1 am, after the actors had gone already.

But I want to talk about Gale now.

The convention was great and the cast was fantastic and we all had fun, even if Gale was not there. For those of you who were worried the cast might be bothered by fans about Gale's absence or that the convention would be tainted, rest assured that didn't happen. The convention was fantastic and the cast received so much love I think it might last them for years.
But I can't and don't want to say I never thought about Gale or told myself "damn, it would have fantastic if he'd share this or that moment with us". This happened in particular for me when I did the Meet&Greet and CityLunch with Sharon and Randy, which were originally supposed to be with Gale&Randy. I've always loved Sharon and after meeting her upclose I can only say I love her even more now. But of course there was a bit of sadness at the thought of what it could have been if Gale had been there. The other moments in which I particularly felt sad he was not there, were during the moments the cast was all together on stage. Especially in the end, I was a little sad that Gale could not experience the love with which we embraced the cast. The convention ended with such a big, long, loud applause and I think there were no dry eyes in the house. Sharon and Michelle were clearly tearing up and the emotions were evident on all of the actors' faces. Even Randy, who sometimes has looked a bit "cold" about the QAF experience in the past, looked touched by how much this fandom still loves the show and cares about it and is grateful to the actors for bringing it to life. I think Gale deserved to feel that love too, because as Sharon very rightly pointed out, Gale and his character were a major part of this show. I guess there was a bit of shift there for me, from being sad for myself to being sad for him, because Sharon really insisted during the CityWalk that Gale DID want to be there and did all he could to make it happen. In particular, she pointed out that those people who think Gale never intended to really attend to begin with are absolutely wrong. And I remember that after news broke out that Gale was not attending, quite a few people hinted that the convention wasn't really a Gale thing<\/i>. Well, you were wrong.
What makes me feel better about that is that I'm pretty sure Scott took a picture or a video of the applause and cheering and even standing ovation we dedicated to Gale when Sharon talked about him during the last Q&A. I think he sent it to Gale right that moment and I think he was hoping to get maybe a reply he could deliver to us. That didn't happen, but I love the idea that thanks to Scott, Gale can still know how much this fandom adores him, even if he couldn't be there in person. Also, he will be given the book that was put together with fans' contributions especially for him. Each actor received one, during the Meet&Greet. I was at the Meet&Greet with Peter and Scott when they were given theirs and Scott was also given Gale's book and asked to deliver it to him, which I'm sure he will do.

Back to Sharon, she also said that she risked to miss the convention too because of her series, and she was only lucky that her character wasn't in the script of the episode being filmed these days. She said that when she thought she could not make it either, they talked about the possibility of doing a video conference with both Gale and her, but it just wasn't possible, I think she said because it was too expensive. Anyway, another confirmation that Gale does care.

The last thing I want to share right now (maybe later more things will come to me, when I'm less tired...) is what Sharon said about the job that kept Gale from attending the convention. She defined it, and I'm literally quoting her words, a "huge part<\/i> ". Now I cannot know what Sharon would consider huge, but personally, I felt very excited when I heard that. I read again the statement Gale gave us. I did read it yesterday but I was too angry and disappointed to fully take it in. It's a nice and sweet one. I want to believe he really feels sorry about this, even though part of me still thinks he did have a choice, no matter what some people are saying.

On the facebook page of the convention, a fan asked if it's possible for Gale to do a little video conference during one of the Q&A. Elke, the organizer of the convention, said they are trying to work something out. It would go a long way in helping dealing with the disappointment of his cancellation if he could be present for a few minutes even from far away. Maybe just a video message. A sign that he does care. Elke said nothing is sure because as it's obvious now there are problems of availability. But I really hope Gale can find a way to still be part of this convention even for a few minutes.

I just got an email with the alternatives for those who bought stuff with Gale: Sharon will take his place in the Meet&Greet and CityWalk with Randy. I'm glad about that because I love Sharon. For the photos I had bought of Gale&Randy and Gale, I can pick other actors so I'll probably choose Scott, Sharon and Peter. I love the entire cast so I'm happy to have a chance with other actors. But I have to be honest, nothing and nobody can substitute Gale. He was always my favorite and still is.

I hope he'll tell us soon what this new work project is. I seriously need a good, great news to be excited about.

One more thing I want to say: several people have been ranting about the reaction of the fans to Gale's decision. While I think everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think some of these people have been too hard: saving money for months to meet your favorite actor, doing lots of sacrifices to do it, and then seeing all that go to waste when the time has almost come, is not something easy to digest. It takes time. I've been trying to tell people this since yesterday. But some seem unable to understand, maybe because it's not their money and sacrifices that went into this, it's not their dream that it's now gone. I have seen some nasty comments about Gale on facebook, but honestly not so many. Most people have said to be disappointed and angry but that they still love Gale and wish him the best, like me. Is that really awful? Try put yourself into our shoes. Some negative comments in the immediate aftermath of this are normal., not a crime.

Last, I think I'm gonna do a friends cut. I've been thinking about it and I think now the time has come. I have a lot of people on my friends list but only very few of them ever comment and even less if my entries are about something other than QAF\/Gale. Yesterday I posted I've been feeling really down lately and thinking my life is not worth living but only two people saw fit to tell me a word or two. I'm not one to ask for pity or one that shares her problems easily and asks for nice words to make me feel better. But every now and then I do post something about myself and I noticed not many people care. That's ok, I know some people came here mostly for the fanarts and icons and QAf related posts when I first discovered the show a few years back. But the fanarts, if I get into the mood of creating something again sooner or later, will always be public. For the rest of my entries, I think it's time to share those only with those who care. I won't be cutting people who have disagreed with me about Gale, I'm not that petty. But if others feel like cutting me over this, that's ok too.

To conclude, someone on facebook made a funny connection between what happened with Gale and QAF. It made me laugh a little after crying yesterday, so I thought I'd share:

++ I need to stop buying books, seriously. My latest buy is The Bedlam Boys<\/a>. I haven't started reading it yet and I've already put my eyes on another one: What They Always Tell Us<\/a>. Between ebooks and paperback books, I'm going broke.

+++ It's Boyd's birthday today! 30 years old, I cannot believe it. He still doesn't look it. What's up with me and falling in love with celebrities who look younger than their age? Gale, Randy, Boyd... Who's next?
Speaking of Boyd, he's featured in the current issue of the UK magazine Wonderland Magazine<\/a>. Anyone on my flist living in the UK and willing to go to the nearest newsstand and flip through it to tell me if Boyd's piece is worth the 17 (!!!) dollars it would cost me to order it online and have it shipped to me? :P
Of course, Boyd's birthday means a picspam tribute is in order.
