The Manthiram Lab, led by Karthish Manthiram in Caltech’s Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, creates electrified molecular systems. Two manifestations of this are pursued by the lab:

Electrifying catalytic synthesis
Electrically powered heterogeneous catalysts that use nitrogen gas, carbon dioxide, and water as sustainable inputs for chemical synthesis

Electrifying metabolism in living cells
Electrifying metabolism in living cells through control of transmembrane charge transfer, cellular redox balance, gene expression, and enzymatic catalysis
We take pride in not just the science we do, but how we do it.

TEAM
We are chefs of the molecular world, taking pride in hood-to-table practices. We use just five ingredients in our recipes: electricity, carbon dioxide, water, nitrogen, and microbes.
