A native Hawaiian historian, Kameʻeleihiwa relates these projects to the long history of the Ahupuaʻa system that had been devastated by centuries of plantation agriculture and privatization of land. It argues that food democracy is not only about the sufficiency in terms of the amount of food grown locally, but rather, is crucially about cultural revitalization and community building.
