Godfrey Baldacchino (born 1960) PhD (Warwick, UK) BA, PGCE (Malta), MA (The Hague, The Netherlands) is Professor of Sociology at the University of Malta, Malta; Island Studies Teaching Fellow and UNESCO co-Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability at the University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown, Canada. He is the founding Executive Editor of Island Studies Journal (ISSN: 1715-2593).
He is a member of the International Advisory/Editorial Boards of various journals, including The Round Table: Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs and Asia Pacific Viewpoint; President of the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA); Council Member of the Islands Commission of the International Geographical Union (IGU); Director for Global Islands Network (GIN); Chair of the Scientific Board of RETI – the excellence network of island universities; series co-editor with Rowman & Littlefield International (USA); moderator of the island studies research website: www.islandstudies.ca.
Professor Baldacchino has secured around US$1.2 million (€ 1,000,000) in research funding since 2002, including from the Atlantic Metropolis Centre, the European Commission, Health Canada, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the Provincial Government of Prince Edward Island and the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD)
He has served as visiting professor to tertiary education institutions in Australia, Barbados, Fiji, Iceland, Mauritius, Seychelles and Sweden. He has also been invited to deliver papers, guest lectures and/or keynotes in Åland, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Japan, Finland, New Zealand, Philippines, South Korea, St Lucia, Taiwan, Trinidad, the UK and USA. He was also Visiting Professor of Island Tourism at the Università di Corsica Pasquale Paoli, France (2013-5).
Professor Baldacchino is sole author or lead co-author of 22 books and monographs; sole editor or lead co-editor of 20 other publications; and guest single or lead editor of various scholarly journal thematic issues, including: International Journal of Educational Development (21[3], 2001); Tijdschrift voor Economische en Sociale Geografie (95[3], 2004); World Development (32[2], 2004); Geografiska Annaler (87B[4], 2005); Journal of Small Business & Entrepreneurship (19[4], 2006, with T’eo Fairbairn); International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business (9[4], 2010); Space and Culture (13[2], 2010, with Stephen Royle); and Cultural Geographies (20[2], 2013, with Eric Clark). He is also author or co-author of over 120 peer reviewed articles and book chapters since 1988.
His recently authored or edited books include: Island Enclaves: Offshoring Strategies, Creative Governance and Subnational Island Jurisdictions (Montreal QC, McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2010); Island Futures: Conservation and Development across the Asia-Pacific (Tokyo, Springer, 2011); Extreme Heritage Management: Practices and Policies from Densely Populated Islands (New York, Berghahn Books, 2011); Island Songs: A Global Repertoire (Lanham MD, Scarecrow Press, 2011); A Taste of Islands (Charlottetown PE, Island Studies Press, 2012) and The Political Economy of Divided Islands: Unified Geographies, Multiple Polities (Macmillan, 2013). Four other books are in different stages of production, including a 4-volume collection: Island studies: Critical Concepts in Geography (Routledge, 2015), with Ilan Kelman.
