Statement on the UC San Diego Makerspace
The UC San Diego Makerspace plays an important role in the campus ecosystem. It is distinctive in being open to all students, regardless of department, and its training and equipment — from sewing machines to metal-cutting lasers — support students who design, build and experiment.
The Makerspace represents an investment in student learning, creativity and innovation.
As with many long-term endeavors, sustaining the Makerspace requires careful stewardship of resources and a flexible response to changing constraints and opportunities. Recently, like many units across campus and at other institutions of higher education, the Makerspace has made some cutbacks in order to operate in a fiscally responsible manner.
At the same time, efforts are underway to diversify Makerspace's funding sources. Opportunities ranging from philanthropy to community membership programs are being explored to strengthen the Makerspace’s financial resilience. Ideas from the community are also welcome.
The Makerspace will remain a valuable part of UC San Diego’s innovation ecosystem for years to come, continuing to enrich the campus through hands-on learning and creative exploration.
