The recent trends in female labour force participation have garnered considerable attention among... more The recent trends in female labour force participation have garnered considerable attention among policymakers and research scholars in India, primarily because of the sudden and significant falls in female labour force participation rates in the presence of many enabling factors, particularly the growth of the GDP. Studies on the falling rates have examined many underlying ‘pull and push’ factors but few of them have analysed the role of productivity. This study attempts to have a preliminary understanding of the role of labour productivity on the female labour force participation in India using cross-section and panel data. The study found a link between labour productivity and wages which could impact female labour force participation. The paper found that the FLFPR function for the rural and urban sectors is markedly different from each other and hence, should be studied separately.

India has made significant economic progress in recent decades since 1990 but the impressive econ... more India has made significant economic progress in recent decades since 1990 but the impressive economic growth has not been matched by progress towards women’s equal economic participation. Women’s participation in economic activities is important for the realization of their full economic potential which would not only enhance economic growth rate but would also make growth more inclusive. The recent sharp decline in female labour force participation (FLFP) rate in India has been a matter of debate in academic and policy spheres and as a result many studies has emerged for explaining this sharp fall in FLFP rate. The paper has undertaken a extensive literature survey in order to understand the decline in female participation in economic activities. Using data obtained from various NSS rounds and from national accounts statistics, the paper test U-shaped relationship between income level and FLFP rate using simple scatter diagram and fitting a polynomial function using MS excel software. Based on the analysis we found that U-shaped relationship doesn’t exist in India. This may be either due to the significant large impact of other determinants of FLFP rate which outweigh the effect of increased per capita income or it may be due to a low level of per capita income indicating that India has not yet moved into the rising part of U-shape curve.

Continuous Changes in policy environment since 1992 have encouraged and enabled the Indian MNCs to take investment in foreign countries. The paper found that during post reform period Indian multinationals have been investing vigorously at international level. Total numbers of Indian firms, outward stocks &amp; flows have recorded impressive growth since 1991. Comparative analysis of the flows of FDI and OFDI clearly brings out the fact that FDI inflows continuously remained higher than that of the OFDI flows. However, the gap between the FDI and OFDI flows, which was very wide before the year 2000, has been narrowed down substantially after the year 2001.

The empirical evidences suggested that relationship between urbanization and development changes with changes in the stage of development.

The paper analyses and describes the extent of gender disparities in Haryana, particularly in res... more The paper analyses and describes the extent of gender disparities in Haryana, particularly in respect of sex ratio, literacy and participation in economic activities. Significant gender disparities were evidenced by sex ratio, literacy rate and women participation rate. The paper found that districts having lower gender gap in literacy were able to increase sex ratio more than the districts having higher gender gap in literacy. This is also corroborated by negative correlation coefficient between the two. High level of gender gap were found in female WPR. A negative and high degree of correlation between gender gap in literacy and gender gap in WPR indicates that high gender gap in literacy is associated with lower gender gap in WPR and vice-versa. The existence of spatial patterns in gender disparities hints at the foreplay of social, cultural and geographical factors on gender disparities rather than administration efforts.

Although in the absence of availability of reliable data District Human Development Index was not constructed but the available indicators suggests large inter-district disparities across the states. The poor states are characterised by low percentage of non-farm income in district domestic product, low rate of urbanization and low percentage of non-farm workers in total working population.

The paper analysed the impact of inward FDI on the domestic investment in the country. There are ... more The paper analysed the impact of inward FDI on the domestic investment in the country. There are three different viewpoints in the effect of crowding-out or crowding-in of the inflow FDI on domestic investment. The FDI inflows may induce domestic firms to invest and crowd in domestic investment, it may crowd out domestic investment to its impact may be neutral. The literature review shows that the FDI in the host country can be mixed depending on the conditions of market and sectoral distribution of FDI. Using multiple regression analysis we estimated investment equation to ascertain the impact of FDI on domestic investment. We found that though FDI/GDP ratio has increased significantly but its impact on domestic investment has not been negative, indicating its crowding out.

The paper analyses the trends and patterns of female employment in urban and rural areas in Haryana. The paper seeks to capture the gender gap in employment in both at the State level and district level. It also examines the kind and quality of work taken up by females in Haryana and makes a comparative study of the urban-rural female employment scenario with respect to wages, education level and nature of employment. The paper found that women’s participation in Haryana is significantly lower than national average. Average daily employment of women in factories in 2010 was 4.78 percent in Haryana which is significantly lower than 15.76 percent for All-India level.
