New Year same ol’ me. Still here, still battling Cancer, still working, still travelling, still cooking, still getting angry, still feeling joy, still grateful. And that goes to show, that being the same ol’ is not always a bad thing and new year does not necessarily need equate to a complete overhauling of one’s life. Of course, we must keep evolving, otherwise life will leave us unequipped for the future and bring much misery. I would like to think I too have been evolving over the past 12 months – learning to set boundaries, learning not to fret over scans, learning to appreciate the many resources that I have to keep myself engaged and useful, despite being devoid of the kind social circles as I used to have prior to my diagnosis, learning to do good make up, read without targets and cook more meals. It is all a work in progress and I do hope that the evolution continues, but in basics, I still remain the same.

I do not wish to do a yearly round up; like every year, it was filled with highs and lows. Some big wins and some tumbles but I managed to get over them and still continue walking. I am grateful to the powers that be, that allowed me the strength and the skill to get up, dust myself off and keep continuing.
I did read some good books and watched some great shows over this year, though latter much less than usual and all Korean ( yes, I am not diversifying here!)
I loved Phineas Finn by Anthony Trollope. In the masterful hands of Trollope, even dry Parliamentary politics becomes a page turner as the reader follows the rise and realizations of Phineas Finn in his quest for political success. Kim Ji Young, Born 1982 by Cho Nam- Joo, translated by Jamie Chang was another great read following the multiple voices of women in Jiyoung’s family through Jiyoung to capture the devastating effects of a society obsessed with patriarchy and it’s psychological impact on women. While the page count is less than 200 pages, but to narrative stays with long afterwards. Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk, translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones was another such amazing novel about nature and living beings and justice and comradery. Leonard and Hungry Paul by Ronan Hession was perhaps my book of the year, simple, joyful, deeply human, deeply insightful, this story about finding your path, without grand gestures but through everyday actions should be a mandatory read, especially in today’s world. I also read several Agatha Christie’s , always a joy, Georgette Heyer, both her whodunnits and Regency romances, more joy and the supreme master of crime Seishi Yokomizo, whose Detective Kosuke Kindaichi novels, I cannot recommend enough.

My Korean show watching went through its own highs and lows. Some were just meh – Hyena, Bon Appetite You Majesty ( why was it so hyped up?). Others were supremely entertaining and helped me distract myself from the pain and fatigue. Loved every bit of action and drama in Trauma Code and Beyond the Bar. But my best watch were two slice of life series which gently emphasised on finding your own path – Summer Strike follows Kim Seol-hyun as she resigns from her exhausting corporate job and moves to a sea side town of Angok and rediscovers relationships, community and purpose through everyday life. Typhoon Family was perhaps my most favourite show of the year and I loved the plot twist, not only of the lead characters but also the supporting cast; I felt heartbroken at how well the series had captured the misery brought on by the financial crises of 1997 in Korea, the slow burn, subtle romance and the winning character of Kang Tae-poong. Not a chaebol heir, not a super hero, just an everyday guy trying with all his might and guts to keep his father’s legacy and the company afloat.
My traveling was only one vacation to the sea side this year, but it was memorable ; slow and comfortable, everything I wanted. But I did enjoy exploring my old-new city. It was unmatched pleasure exploring new eating places, visiting all kinds of fairs and going for long winding drives.

As I wrote earlier, 2025 was like all years, a good year filled with joyful memories, some reflections on how I can do better and some obstacles that needed more perseverance than usual to overcome. It was in a nutshell, usual.
I end this piece with a New Year greeting by the inimitable Ms. Dickinson. Here’s wishing everyone a joyful, soft, healthy 2026, filled with books, food and everything that makes you happy!
May it Come Today?
Then New Year the sweetest,
And long life the merriest,
And the Heaven highest – by and by!
