This raises questions about how to interpret what such youths report. Rescorla et al. (2019, European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 28, 1107) found that much more variance in 72,493 parents' ratings of their offspring's mental health problems was accounted for by individual differences than by societal or cultural differences. Although parents' reports are essential for clinical assessment of their offspring, they reflect parents' perceptions of the offspring. Consequently, clinical assessment also requires self-reports from the offspring themselves. To test effects of individual differences, society, and culture on youths' self-ratings of their problems and strengths, we analyzed Youth Self-Report (YSR) scores for 39,849 11-17 year olds in 38 societies. METHODS Indigenous researchers obtained YSR self-ratings from population samples of youths in 38 socie...

Objectives: To carry out translation and transcultural adaptation to Portuguese / Brazil version of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 (MABC-2) for the 7-10 year age group and test the version translated into children with ASD. Method: The study was applied to 41 boys with ASD and correlated with Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices test (CPM). Results and Discussion: It was observed that the correlations with the standard scores between the domains assessed by MABC-2 and the CPM results showed to be median for MD (r = 0.454, p = 0.012) and B (r = 0.324, p = 0.081) and small for A&C (r = 0.170, p = 0.368). By the traffic light system, 83% of those evaluated were classified in the red zone, with significant motor deficits. Conclusion: Correlation tests showed that the degree of intell...

This chapter will provide background and history on various diagnostic systems, including categorical and dimensional approaches, and how they apply to childhood problems and disorders. The chapter will also discuss how these systems are relevant to the overall assessment process and how they can be integrated.

Results indicated considerable consistency across societies regarding mean ratings on the ASR problem items. Most effect sizes (ESs) for societal differences in problem scales were small (2–5%). Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analyses indicated that culture clusters and society accounted for small percentages of variance in Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Problems scores, with most of the variation accounted for by individual differences within societies. In contrast to the small effects of society on problem scores, for the ASR Personal Strengths scale the societal ES was 34% and culture cluster accounted for 12% of the variance. Worse reported relations with spouse/partner were associated with higher problem sc...

Materials and Methods: Adolescents (N = 19) with mono-symptomatic (primary or secondary) nocturnal enuresis group treatment for 40 weeks. Discharge criterion was established as 8 weeks with consecutive dry nights. PRYP and APSR were scored by the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Youth Self-Report (YSR). Results: Pre-treatment data: 1) Higher number of clinical cases based on parent report than on self-report for Internalizing Problems (IP) (13/19 vs. 4/19), Externalizing Problems (EP) (7/19 vs. 5/19) and Total Problem (TP) (11/19 vs. 5/19); 2) EP (57.4) and mean APSR scores (IP = 52.4, EP = 49.5, TP = 52.4) were within the normal range. Difference between Reduction in the number of clinical cases on parental evaluation: 9/19 adolescents remained within clinical range for IP, 2/19 for EP, and 7/19 for TP. 3) All post-treatment mean scores were within the normal range; the difference between pre Conclusions: The behavioral treatment based on the use of urine alarm is effective for adolescents with mono-symptomatic (primary and secondary) nocturnal enuresis. The study favors the hypothesis that enuresis is a cause, not a consequence, of other behavioral problems.

To compare Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) findings for a large Brazilian general population sample with those for US children considering: (a) mean problem item ratings; (b) fit of the US-derived CBCL 8-syndrome model; (c) scale internal consistency measured by Cronbach's alphas; (d) effects of society, age, gender on CBCL problem scores; and (e) ability to discriminate referred from non-referred children. Methods. Parents of 1228 non-referred 6-to-11-year-olds from three different regions of Brazil and 247 referred 6-to-11-year-olds from one clinic rated their children's behavioural and emotional problems using the CBCL/6-18. Results. Results for mean item ratings and scale internal consistencies were very similar to those found in the US and in Uruguay. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that Brazilian data showed the best fit to the US 8-syndrome model of all countries studied to date. Gender patterns were comparable to those reported in other societies, ...

Content analysis considered the studies' concepts and terms, related theoretical elements, and predominant lines of argument. A reading of the argumentative strategies detected the existence of a critical view of the modus operandi in the public/private relationship based on Social Medicine and the theoretical tenets of the Brazilian Health Reform Movement. The study also identified contributions based on neoliberal business approaches that focus strictly on economic issues to discuss private health insurance. Understanding the public/private link in healthcare obviously requires the development of a solid empirical base, analyzed with adequate theoretical assumptions due to the inherent degree of complexity in the public/private healthcare interface.

A literature review has indicated an absence of val- idation studies of this questionnaire in Brazil and the coexistence of two translations, here named Forms A and B. To overcome such difficulty, helping future researches, a group of 90 youths (M = 13.12; SD = 0.805) from three Brazilian cities fulfilled successively both trans- lations: half of them followed the sequence A-B and the other half the sequence B-A. In both situations all the participants had a break equivalent to the duration of a class before filling the second translation. No statistical differences were found regarding the answers on both forms. The correlation index between forms A and B was elevated for most scales, indicat- ing content equivalence. In conclusion, it is desirable to have only one translation in use in Brazil, considering the results that depicted that both translations are capabl...

Participated in the cross-sectional exploratory research 40 children (8 to 12 years old) and their respective parents or caretakers. The inclusion criteria were: diagnosis of ASD registered at the school and confirmed by the ABC scale, school attendance of at least 70% of school days, and use of afterschool resource room. The students were assessed using the Reading Process Assessment Test (PROLEC) and the parents answered a questionnaire to characterize the child and the family. The results confirm that children with ASD have difficulties in developing reading skills. In all school years students had below-average scores in comparison with children with normal reading skills, especially on tests that required text comprehension. This suggests ...
