ITU Technology for Good

In this episode we are focusing on ICT accessibility - specifically for persons with disabilities. People who identify as living with disability represent 15% of the world’s population, which is currently around 1 billion people. Within this population there exists a very wide array of disabilities encompassing physical mobility, autism and speech delays, persons who are deaf and hard of hearing, and persons with visual disability . Up to 70% of disabilities are invisible but they can still present a barrier to access and use the growing range of information technologies available. 

This episode explores innovations in the accessibility space from established companies like Google and Microsoft to the new softwares and entrepreneurial ventures developed by people living with disability who experienced and realised a need that was not being met, and did something about it.  With many extracts from the WSIS FORUM 2021 discussions.

Technology For Good #11 Accessibility for all

Ageing is becoming a megatrend. Around the world birth rates are declining, while people are living longer, healthier lives. For the first time in human history, people over the age of 60 outnumber those under the age of five. A population predicted to reach 2 billion by the year 2050. 

To help us prepare for this new reality, the World Health Organization and the United Nations have launched the Decade of Healthy Ageing. From 2021 to 2030, this decade will contain milestones related to the Sustainable Development Goals. 

In this episode we are focusing on how technology can have a major part to play in ensuring that this population does not go underserved, but that will only happen if both technology creators and policy makers are aware of and act on this dramatic shift in the global demographic. 

Featuring plenty of great content including interviews and extracts from experts and luminaries at major ITU events this year such as WSIS FORUM 2021 and facts and figures from ITU's brand new report: "Ageing in a digital world - from vulnerable to valuable".

Technology For Good #12:  Healthy ageing In a digital world

Not only does the technology we use create mountains of e-waste that can be difficult to dispose of safely, but much of it also contains valuable, rare and finite minerals and metals that are essential for the continuing production of new models of technology. Very few countries regulate this waste stream. E-waste is not just a topic for environmentalists, but for all technology producers and policymakers. Hear about this and the efforts to improve e-waste management, from our expert speakers on this episode of Technology for Good which is  being launched for International E-waste Day, an annual UN day to highlight the growing e-waste issue.

In 1973, ITU Secretary-General Mohamed Mili had asked Jean-Pierre Canel, a versatile amateur composer and member of ITU staff, for something to play on World Telecommunication Day on 17 May, when a new building (the Tower) was to be formally opened at ITU headquarters in Geneva. The result was the Telecommunications Anthem (Hymne des Télécommunications). On that occasion, the anthem was performed as a simple instrumental. However, an impressive orchestral version with full choir premiered at another opening ceremony in September 1973 at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos, Spain.
