Hello, I am Luyang Zhao, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University. I direct the SMILE Robotics Lab (Soft, Modular, Intelligent, Learning, Embodied).

Before joining Clemson in 2025, I completed my PhD in Computer Science from Dartmouth College (advised by Prof. Devin Balkcom). I earned double majors in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Minnesota, where I conducted undergraduate research with Prof. Maria Gini.

My research focuses on Soft, Modular, and Bio-inspired Robotics, integrating Artificial Intelligence (LLMs, Reinforcement Learning) to build adaptive systems for real-world environments.

I am actively recruiting motivated PhD students! If you are passionate about building robots and coding intelligence, please email me at [email protected].

Research Highlights

I was honored with the Neukom Outstanding Graduate Research Prize for my contributions to soft modular robotics. My research is published in top-tier venues including Nature Communications, npj Robotics, Soft Robotics, IEEE Transactions on Field Robotics, IEEE RA-L, IROS, RoboSoft, and AIAA.

Previously, I gained industrial experience at Amazon Robotics (perception, localization & planning for Kiva robots) and TuSimple (motion planning and decision-making for autonomous trucks in urban environments).
