Nina Tura, M.Sc. Tech. is a sustainability-minded forward thinker with strong experience in innovation management education and research. As a Postdoctoral researcher at LUT University (Finland) she is curious to take my thinking forward every day. By focusing on sustainability-oriented innovations, she is enthusiastic to search for sustainable industrial and societal renewal.Her special expertise areas include innovation management, sustainability-oriented innovations, sustainable value creation, circular (economy) business and sharing business models. Currently she is working as a researcher and a project manager in international research project ”Citizens as Pilots of Smart Cities". She is particularly interested in continuously developing her skills and knowledge every day, and grow professionally. Besides conducting research in a close collaboration with several national and international companies and research organizations, she is highly involved with innovation and strategic management education in LUT-University. Her special interest areas include also adult pedagogy and she is enthusiastic in developing university-level education. As her "hobby", she is currently finalizing her Master studies in this field.She has been publishing e.g. in Journal of Cleaner Production, Industrial Marketing Management, Technology Analysis and Strategic Management, International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development and International Journal of Innovations and Technology Management. Her recent research articles include Themes such as "Sustainability of sharing economy business models", "Enablers and barriers for Circular economy", ”Darker side of sustainability” and ”Platform design framework”.In her free time she has also passionate on sports especially on CrossFit.

The demand for more sustainable business models is increasing the need for current businesses to ... more The demand for more sustainable business models is increasing the need for current businesses to develop their business processes and value creation mechanisms. One way to improve sustainability is sharing resources and services in a new sharing economy paradigm. This chapter builds a conceptual model for taxi ridesharing to describe the value potential that is born by increasing the efficiency of taxi businesses. First, a framework for multisided markets is built to understand the different value elements of taxi ridesharing. Then, a conceptual mathematical model is introduced to understand the value symmetries including the cost saving potential and allocation from the perspectives of the customer and the supplier. The model shows that it is possible to have a system that creates value for both the taxi driver and the passenger, while simultaneously leading to significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

The demands for more sustainable development are increasing, and solving complex sustainability c... more The demands for more sustainable development are increasing, and solving complex sustainability challenges is acknowledged to require innovations that take environmental, social and economic perspectives into consideration. The development of innovations for sustainability requires the utilisation of sustainability knowledge, i.e., creating market value by combining pieces of environmental, organisational and social information. In this study, we address the reasons why sustainability knowledge is not exploited more broadly and set focus on the challenges in the utilisation of sustainability knowledge. The empirical data for the study was collected in an interdisciplinary expert workshop and by conducting semi-structural interviews in four Finnish companies. The study reveals challenges in the utilisation of sustainability knowledge at all stages of knowledge management. We also analyse the potential of digitalisation in enhancing innovations for sustainability and lowering the challenges in the utilisation of sustainability knowledge.

Biobased packaging products are framed as products that have environmental value. They are promot... more Biobased packaging products are framed as products that have environmental value. They are promoted by many institutions and companies as a way of addressing climate change challenges by decreasing carbon footprints and providing alternatives for the fossil fuel-based economy. The use of biobased packaging products has started to become widespread, and they are increasingly commercially available. Despite the acknowledged benefits of such products, there are several challenges associated with the use of them. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of biobased packaging products and presents a conceptual framework of the sustainability challenges experienced over their life cycles. Systemic innovation can deliver influential sustainability solutions, but it occurs rarely. Incre... more Systemic innovation can deliver influential sustainability solutions, but it occurs rarely. Increasing sustainability challenges firms to improve the system as a whole through broadening their engagement by game-changing innovations. This empirical case study explores the challenges faced by Finnish business leaders that hold back attempts at systemic innovation for sustainability. The challenges were identified to be caused by structural impediments, uncertainty avoidance and conflicting aims within and between firms. These in turn manifest as cumulative problems in managing opportunity costs, outcome uncertainties and communication problems along the entire innovation process. The study highlights the need for firms to acquire capabilities for sustainability by focusing on building capabilities in open innovation, evaluating and seizing radical opportunities, and reconfiguring the organisation for systemic innovations for sustainability.

The case studied is DORA, a platform-based information system for multimodal traveling optimization. Utilizing focus group methodology, we explain the requisite conditions for the emergence of an ecosystem and describe the attributes that enable the ecosystem to remain sustainably together. Analyzing positive and negative value elements for each stakeholder we find that to subscribe to the transformative effect that the platform has on their business stakeholders expect benefits in scaling up their business cost-effectively while also pursuing common goals related to platform development, fair sharing of the created value and improving the sustainability of the transport system. This means changes and development of innovations that allow the creation of new markets and value networks by combining new set of sustainability -driven values- finding disruptive innovations for sustainability. Increased digitalization is seen to provide multiple value creation mechanisms and possibilities by enhancing the more effective use of resources. The emergence of IOT (Internet of Things) has connected objects (e.g. physical devices, buildings and vehicles) to existing network of information. IOT can work as a trigger for creation of new markets and value networks by connecting existing information, networked economies and societies together in a new way. Expectations towards IOT solutions are high and they are expected to revolutionize the business markets by promoting the emergence of disruptive innovations for sustainability e.g. in healthcare and transportation solutions, smart cities, intelligent energy services and circular economy. The study focuses on reviewing the impact of IOT in developing these innovations aiming to foster disruptive sustainable change.

The increasingly efficient use of scarce resources is a central theme in the gradual transition t... more The increasingly efficient use of scarce resources is a central theme in the gradual transition towards a circular economy. Hazardous materials represent a category of resources that is often difficultand potentially risky-to transport, store, or neutralize. As a result, hazardous materials are rarely included in closed material loops. The present paper analyzes HorsePower, a business concept centered around an innovative way of utilizing horse manure. Horse manure is generated in millions of tons in horse-rich countries such as the UK, Germany, and France. It is a hazardous resource, as it may spread diseases, and cannot be disposed of or landfilled economically. The content analysis of 21 semi-structured interviews carried out with different business actors participating in the HorsePower business network reveals that the success of HorsePower stems from its ability to combine the complementary capabilities and material needs of a relatively complex network of business actors including stables, sawmills, logistical service providers, and heat and power plants. Each actor receives added value; the benefits from participation are greater than the sacrifices of participation. Furthermore, the findings show that certain types of hazardous resources, when combined with resources produced by another actor, may be burned efficiently and safely in specific power plants, reducing the need for other types of fuel. The observations imply that novel approaches for effectively sharing ideas and resource needs across organizational boundaries are needed to facilitate the development of additional innovative CE business concepts, leveraging both actorspecific capabilities and intra-actor resource dependencies.
