He succeeded in transforming an old manufacturing firm into a modern industry for surgical instruments. His interest in art led him to join the art history seminar at the university,’ where his modest personality was very much appreciated. His strange references to «works« by leading artists in his home, however, caused confusion and some irritation among his fellow students, until we finally understood that he really did have an important collection of modern art. The present article reports on a controlled intervention study concerning the effects of non-dire... more The present article reports on a controlled intervention study concerning the effects of non-directed use of pictures of works of art as a way of stimulating institutionalized elderly women. After the stimulation period differences in ratings between the groups indicated improved well-being in the intervention group. Such improvement was not seen in the C-group. The quantitative analyses of the results reveal a significant change of the parameters happiness, peacefulness, creativeness, social activities and systolic blood pressure. The qualitative analysis shows that the conversations about pictures of works of art in the intervention group give the person free rein to her own imagination and are merely characterized by happiness. In the control group the conversations are to a great extent characterized by downheartedness, despair and complaining.

The present article reports on a controlled intervention study of the effects of a nondirected us... more The present article reports on a controlled intervention study of the effects of a nondirected use of pictures as a possible modality for improving well-being in elderly women. Works of art were chosen for the individual taste pattern on the basis of psychological and art scientific research on aesthetic reactions to and perception of art. Participants were randomly allocated either to the intervention (n = 20) or to the control (n = 20) group. Participants in both groups had the same amount of social contact with and attention from the experimenter. The difference between the groups indicated improved well-being in the intervention group, an improvement not seen in the control group. The quantitative analyses of the results reveal a significant improvement of the positive mood parameters happiness, peacefulness, satisfaction and calmness and the negative parameters low-spirited, unhappy and sad. Systolic blood pressure decreased and an improvement was seen in the subjects&#39; medical health status with regard to reported dizziness, fatigue, pain and use of laxatives.

Abstract: The present article reports a controlled intervention study concerning the effects of a... more Abstract: The present article reports a controlled intervention study concerning the effects of a nondirected use of pictures of works of art as a way of stimulating creativity in elderly institutionalized women. Participants were randomly allocated either to the intervention (n = 20) or to the control (n = 20) group. After the intervention significant improvement in ratings between the groups was measured, with the intervention group more open and flexible and with a stronger deposition to a creative behavior than subjects in the control group. They also showed greater freedom and variation than the control group in drawing circles and making pictures. In puzzle tests the intervention group constructed increasingly imaginative, irregular, and open alternatives with colored patterns. The control group constructed closed and black forms. Seniors’ experiences of visual art environmental enrichment

The present study aimed at determining whether short-term exposure to art in shared common areas ... more The present study aimed at determining whether short-term exposure to art in shared common areas in congregate housing units could affect health and health determinants among the residents. Ten residents (mean age 80.4 years) at one block were exposed to visual art environmental enrichment in common areas over a period of three months. Thirteen persons (mean age 86.6 years) living in another block played in-house boule. Cornell's test, Mini-Mental tests (MMT), and face recognition test were performed to assess depression, cognition, and episodic memory, respectively before and after the intervention. The results show that visual art environmental enrichment in common areas and lack of stimulating and guiding dialogues show a change in depression scores in the intervention group (p = 0.018) and the control group (p = 0.009). MMT scores improved only in the control group (p = 0.003). No changes in episodic memory in any of the groups were observed. It could be concluded that in order to obtain a positive result of short term visual art environmental enrichment, guiding art dialogues conducted by nurses, as described in previous research, should be added to visual art environmental enrichment in healthcare settings.

Late in the 14th century the Pope Innocnnt VIII let build a summer residence, the Belvedere, on ... more Late in the 14th century the Pope Innocnnt VIII let build a summer residence, the Belvedere, on the top of the Vatican, to which was added an open loggia. This was decorated with murals, on the back of the space a series om landscapes, each representing one of the small Italian states which in his days belonged to the Vatican state. The arches. were equally decorated, but the original murals there have been almost totally destryed by weather and wind, and some centuries later replaced by rather rough paintings. However, in the one end of this arcade, part of a man´s head deviates from the rest by a much more distinct face and scull, probaly parts of a putto. As I have pointed out, this can be attributed to Mantegna - and thus also to the otherwise vanished original mural. There are however no documents showing that Mantegna has been working in Rome. This little fragment shows that this has been the case.
