My main research area is the early Jesus movement's development and its transition from a Jewish movement to a non-Jewish, new religion, Christianity, in the beginning of the second century. In my dissertation (2003) I specifically addressed the issue of the separation between Jews and non-Jews in the early Jesus Movement.

In my second monograph (2009) I treat the emergence of the traditional perspective of the Apostle Paul, which is essentially a normative theological paradigm. I am currently working on a third monograph, based on the hypothesis that Paul never left Judaism, arguing that the conflicts within the movement probably concerned various strategies for dealing with the relations between Jews and non-Jews in the Jesus Movement.

This is an extraordinarily dynamic field of research where there is a lot going on currently. Many old, often confessionally motivated, truths are overturned and need to be replaced by new models based on scholarly points of departure.

Nevertheless, most of them are nothing more than competent study material for graduate level students-the specialist hardly find anything new in these pages. One cannot emphasise the importance, however, of those books which gives the opportunity for this kind of audience to study a certain topic by the aid of such lucidly written, enthusiastic and comprehensive assessments. For these readers, a highly welcome addition to the basic material of the book is a "Glossary" (117-124), which essentially explains some crucial concepts of the treated topics. All in all, the volume is a readable introduction to the Jewish and Christian messianic thought at the turn of the era, a convenient addition to the bookshelves of every student of the topic.

Paulusforskning i förändring Inledning År 1962 föreslog den amerikanske vetenskapsteoretikern Tho... more Paulusforskning i förändring Inledning År 1962 föreslog den amerikanske vetenskapsteoretikern Thomas Kuhn att vetenskapliga framsteg sker i vad han kallade vetenskapliga revolutioner. 1 Med det menade han att vetenskap inte utvecklas kumulativt, dvs, att enskilda vetenskapliga framsteg läggs till varandra, utan i mer omfattande processer där ett helt vetenskapsfält kan komma att förändras i grunden. Kuhn menade att den mesta forskningen sker inom etablerade ramar där ganska mycket är förutbestämt, vilket Kuhn kallade normalvetenskap. Det finns helt enkelt inom varje vetenskaplig disciplin vissa frågor och vissa svar som är vetenskapligt och socialt accepterade. När ett tillräckligt antal forskare emellertid når resultat som egentligen inte är förenliga med det dominerande vetenskapliga paradigmet, tänker sig Kuhn att det uppstår ett slags paradigmskifte varvid ett nytt vetenskapligt paradigm etableras och en ny normalvetenskap uppstår. Kuhns teori om hur vetenskap generellt utvecklas passar väldigt bra in på forskningen om aposteln Paulus. Under de sista decennierna har Paulusforskningen nämligen genomgått en radikal förändring där ett dominerande paradigm håller på att ersättas av ett annat. Enkelt uttryckt kan man säga att det som har hänt är att ett normativt teologiskt perspektiv kommit att ersättas av utgångspunkter som vilar på en vetenskaplig grund som kan accepteras inom historievetenskaperna generellt. Paulus texter har varit, och är, förstås av mycket stor betydelse för den kristna kyrkan. Av de 27 skrifter som ingår i den textsamling vi kallar Nya testamentet sägs Paulus vara författare till 13 brev. De flesta forskare tror visserligen att det egentligen bara är sju brev som Paulus själv författat men det faktum att andra tänkare förefaller att ha författat skrifter i hans namn säger något om den betydelse han hade inom delar av den tidiga Jesusrörelsen. This study is motivated by the observation that the last three decades of significant transformat... more This study is motivated by the observation that the last three decades of significant transformations in the fields of Pauline studies, feminist theologies on Paul, and theologies dealing with the Shoah, have had almost no impact outside the boundaries of their respective disciplines. Ehrensperger suggests that relating insights from these fields would lead to fruitful interactions and new insights for each field and prove especially important for an understanding of Paul from a radically new perspective. In the first main part of her book, Ehrensperger describes the changing perspectives of relevance for her study. The most important concerns hermeneutics and the shift from ‘hegemony to diversity’. As a result of the reformation, people were confronted with differing versions of truth. The Enlightenment’s ambition to free people from church domination could be seen as an attempt to deal with this post-reformation trauma. However, by replacing church domination with a likewise dominating concept of rationality, the Enlightenment actually created a new totalitarian system which claimed to be the only path to truth, thus eliminating other ways of thinking. After World-War II, different post-modern approaches emerged, severely criticizing the traditional Western discourse and resulting in a more complex understanding of interpretation, leading to the present situation which is characterized by diversity and a highly problematized concept of truth. If Christianity had never emerged and become a world religion, the discussion of a "within Judais... more If Christianity had never emerged and become a world religion, the discussion of a "within Judaism perspective" would presumably never have occurred. If the early Jesus movement had never become more than an insignificant, even marginalized, group within first-century Judaism, historians would most likely have considered Jesus-followers as precisely that-a somewhat odd, Jewish, apocalyptic, messianic group that easily could be located within the universalistic currents of Second Temple Judaism. I find it highly improbable that any historian of religion would have come up with the idea that the early Jesus movement should be regarded as something other than a Jewish phenomenon. Odd, yes, but not odder than the Qumran community, the Zealots, the Sicarii, and later, the Karaites or even rabbinic Jews.
