Emiliano López has been appointed as Eugene McDermott Centennial Visiting Professor for the spring term 2026.
The jury awarded a Special Mention to the project Intergenerational Social Housing, by Emiliano López Mónica Rivera Arquitectos, Mallorca, Spain.
“The jury emphasized the high quality of the project, which was considered exemplary for a small of an infill in an exhibiting settlement in a marginal location, in this case with high tourist pressure, providing housing to residents with an intergenerational scope. The building proposes a reinterpretation of traditional bioclimatic principles with addressing the inhabitants as active users. The public façade shows a humble and respectful relation to the surrounding with precise details, while the internal façade has a more contemporary language and which respond greatly to a functional and bio climatical aspects. Another point of attention concerns the common spaces, which can encourage meetings between residents. The jury emphasizes the need to maintain the quality of architecture in a marginal area; although the project is small-scale, it sets an example for the wider area”.
Jury: Frédéric Chartier, David Lorente Ibáñez, Marco Peverini, Enrico Scaramellini, Paola Viganò.

We’re proud to share that our project, House in Arteaga, has been selected as one of 16 featured works in Internalities, an exhibition at the Spanish Pavilion during the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale 2025. This year’s theme, Architectures for Territorial Equilibrium, reflects an approach to design deeply connected to place and material.
The exhibition showcases projects that embody a balance with their territory, using local, regenerative, and low-carbon materials such as wood, stone, ceramics, cork, earth, clay, and plant fibers.
We extend our gratitude to curators Roi Salgueiro and Manuel Bouzas, as well as the panel of experts, for this meaningful recognition. It’s an honor to be part of this group of inspiring colleagues.

In this essay, Emiliano López reconstructs the architectural design process behind the Harvard Married Student Housing, one of Josep Lluís Sert’s most significant works, examining its social, cultural, and ideological context. This approach allows for a deeper understanding and interpretation of the project, revealing key aspects of the architect’s work.
The project, comprising 499 housing units intended to provide temporary accommodation for married students within the Harvard University campus, presents numerous parallels with contemporary debates on collective housing. Despite the differences in context and time, it remains relevant today as a methodological reference.

This volume shows the diverse ways in which the young architectural couple from Barcelona has always addressed questions of architecture, utilization and space. For instance a series of dated momentary photographs while travelling, aptly formulated impressions, thematically specific thoughts and photographs of interior spaces using models present their uninterrupted study of the important themes of architecture. Scattered in between are seven precisely designed buildings on the theme of housing, which are described in detail. The exciting collection is complemented by four essays by renowned guest authors.

Our project ‘Social Housing for Young People in Sant Andreu, Barcelona’ is part of the exhibition ‘Feeling at home. Finding common ground in six urban housing projects in Europe’. The exhibition is curated by Sergison Bates architects for this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale.
The Biennale’s theme, Common Ground is, according to Director David Chiperfield ‘a deliberate act of resistance towards the image of architecture propagated in much of today’s media of projects springing fully formed from the minds of individual talents’. The Biennale will focus on ‘the things that architects share in common, from the conditions of the practice of architecture to the influences, collaborations, histories and affinities that frame and contextualise our work.’
“Feeling at home” focuses on social housing and features projects by Brendeland & Kristoffersen, Knapkiewicz & Fickert, Lacaton & Vassal, López Rivera, Wingender Hovenier and Sergison Bates.
An exhibition catalogue accompanies the exhibition and contains essays by Irina Davidovici on ‘The open question of social housing’ and a timeline charting the evolution of social housing in architecture, urbanism and social policy.

Debate session “Materia Sensible”: Monday July 9th at 16.30. Exhibition Hall , Catalan Institute of Architects (COAC). Event in Spanish.
