From LiberaryTheory to the Interfaciological Turn in Literary Studies" Abstract As its point of departure the article takes the intensifying tendency of contemporary art to conjoin the so-called classical literacy with the refreshing capabilities provided by the new media. It is argued that both new media works and the classical literary ones adapted to them—along with new types of books such as audiobooks or e-books, and the new theories recognising their difference—result in a paradigm shift due to which the very category of medium might seem obsolete. Consequently, the article proposes to withdraw from it and privilege the interface instead. It is through this revitalising trope that material traits of liberary works may be affirmed in the way they influence the perceptive, temporal, spatial and sensory capacities of the “reader.” Following this observation, liberature may be regarded as the constitutive element of our epoch. Regardless of whether it is only a fashionable category or an actual break, liberature marks the importance of the material aspect of communication. This pioneering term in turn becomes the part of a greater set of phenomena constructing our already trans-medial everydayness.

The aim of the paper is to define and to characterize the playable literature. The relation betwe... more The aim of the paper is to define and to characterize the playable literature. The relation between the playability and the text’s structure projected by its author is strongly stressed, alike the performative character of this kind of texts. The emphasis is also put on the connection between the category of the playability of the literature and its materiality (in context of K. Hayles’s theory of technotext and J. Pressman’s concept of aesthetic of bookishness among others). The author shows transmedia history of the playable texts and at the same time analyzes relation of literary playability with the modern culture and the newest tendencies in HCI creation. Theoretical approach is supplemented by some analysis of B. Ortiz Moreno’s and J. Andrews’ works connecting playability and literacy in really creative way. The final part of the paper reveals also some statements on Polish playable literature

This paper offers a close reading of site-specific audio installation Data Urns (by Daniel Huber)... more This paper offers a close reading of site-specific audio installation Data Urns (by Daniel Huber) and audio-walk Her Long Black Hair (by Janet Cardiff) in context of works created as corporeal and haptic experiences in different media. Used methodology is inspired by a new media and theatrical research as well as the traditional literary studies. Author uses category of dramatic monologue as a key to analyse literary aspects of characterized works and proposes the category of locative dramatic monologue as more useful in context of not-only-verbal immersive narratives. The goal of analysis (in which the category of haptic and exploratory reading is developed) can be also described as looking for possibilities of readapting traditional analytic tools in new (media) contexts as a way of postulated renewing of poetic of literary work.

Nieco inna przyjemność tekstu, czyli o dziełach, które "pragną" izycznego kontaktu W 2008 roku na... more Nieco inna przyjemność tekstu, czyli o dziełach, które "pragną" izycznego kontaktu W 2008 roku na uniwersytecie w Sydney, w ramach badań nad interakcją za pośrednictwem dotyku, duet Mari Velonaki (artystka nowomedialna) oraz David Rye (odpowiedzialny za kwestie techniczne i informatyczne) rozpoczął prace nad utworem Circle D: Fragile Balances, drugą z serii prac cyklu Fish and Bird. W pierwszej, której prototyp prezentowano w Linz na Ars Electronica w 2004 roku, dwa roboty-kochankowie przedstawieni jako wózki inwalidzkie-toczyły rozmowy, swobodnie przemieszczając się po niewielkim pokoju. Jednak każde wtargnięcie w ich przestrzeń widza-intruza zakłócało konwersację złożoną z wypowiedzi drukowanych na niewielkich karteczkach, rozrzucanych po pokoju (zapis imitował tu odręczne pismo, charakteryzując jednocześnie każdego z bohaterów). A (Non)Experimental Translation of Electronic Literature. On (Un)Repeatable Translation of Loss o... more A (Non)Experimental Translation of Electronic Literature. On (Un)Repeatable Translation of Loss of Grasp The article focuses on (Nie)panowanie, the Polish translation of Loss of Grasp by Serge Bouchardon and Vincent Volckaert. The main part of the study consists of a detailed report of translator's work made in 2019 and her experience is compared with the experiences of translators of ten other language versions of the work. This study is accompanied by some more general reflection on problems of e-literature translation, especially in the context of experimental translation theory. Two main questions the author deals with are: should e-lit translation always be seen as an experimental one, and what does it, in practice, mean to translate interactive and multimedia work? The last part of the article offers a broader perspective on the field: reflections on trans-platform translation as a kind of digital literature preservation and on the problems of platform liability or programming obsolescence.

Przyjmując szerokie rozumienie terminu (nie wiążąc fenomenu lokacyjności z technologią GPS), autorka stara się pokazać współczesne realizacje tej formy na tle tradycji sztuki (i literatury) związanej z przestrzenią. Ujęcie literackiej opowieści w formę niekodeksową zostaje potraktowane jako kolejna próba przekroczenia granic książki. Szczególną uwagę autorka zwraca na proponowany w narracjach lokacyjnych nowy rodzaj paktu z czytelnikiem i związanie aktu lektury z ciałem odbiorcy. Zostaje też podkreślona swoista multimodalność analizowanych utworów. In this paper, the theory of "liberacy" is understood in the context of various other t... more In this paper, the theory of "liberacy" is understood in the context of various other theories that might fall under the umbrella term of "textual materialism." At the same time, Porczak's concept of shiftart is tested to characterize this specifi c kind of literature. Firstly, Przybyszewska shows that, in this context, the concept of shiftart is useful because it grabs and vividly depicts a shift in literary communication which is underlined by all theorists of textual materialism. Thus, liberary work is described in the paper along with the synonymous term shiftbook. The second part of the article turns to the works of Milorad Pavić. Some other examples are used to examine how the material (shift)book can function as an interface for non-linear writing; something that works even better that any electronic interface.
