Claudio de Majo
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, Doctoral Candidate
I am an Italian researcher currently finishing my second master degree in International Studies at the University of Napoli L'Orientale. My previous titles are a BA in Modern Languages, Literatures and cultures and an MA in American Studies. Although my background might seem not in line with the environmental humanities, my academic career has been characterized by a long-standing interest in environmentally-related topics. In particular, my MA's thesis explored ecocriticism and ecofeminism through a comprehensive analysis of Margaret Atwood's ouevre and my current MSc's thesis tackles the theme of commons and historical political ecology in the Italian region of Calabria before the national unification, drawing from both primary sources - mainly regional archives - and from the academic literature produced so far.
I have also already published a peer-reviewed article on the International Journal of Illich Studies where I explore Illich's convivial philosophy and its relation to eco-sustainable patterns of life. The article is available at the following link: https://journals.psu.edu/illichstudies/article/view/60126.
As for future plans, it is now my intention to pursue a PhD, exploring patterns of human interaction with the environment and the influence of these relations on human societies. Obviously, I intend to combine a more broad theoretical analysis with specific research on the field through archive sources, in an effort to negotiate concision and complexity.
