Des valets et servantes de l'âge classique aux paysans et ouvriers au XIXe siècle, et jusqu'aux ... more Des valets et servantes de l'âge classique aux paysans et ouvriers au XIXe siècle, et jusqu'aux jeunes issus des milieux défavorisés d'aujourd'hui, la littérature d'expression française n'a cessé de faire résonner les voix du peuple. Alors que la linguistique tend à considérer ces représentations de l'oral comme une source précieuse pour l'histoire du français populaire, les spécialistes en littérature se montrent souvent plus réservés, soulignant le caractère conventionnel, voire articifiel, de la mise en scène littéraire des parlers vernaculaires.
Le présent ouvrage réunit des contributions de linguistes et de littéraires qui, à travers onze études de cas, explorent la tension entre représentation mimétique et stylisation esthétique, entre évocation de l'oralité spontanée et élaboration de la dialogicité littéraire. L'ouvrage intéressera donc aussi bien les linguistes que les spécialistes de la littérature et de la culture francophone.

Das Französische hat sich im Laufe seiner Geschichte in vielerlei Hinsicht weiter von seiner late... more Das Französische hat sich im Laufe seiner Geschichte in vielerlei Hinsicht weiter von seiner lateinischen Grundlage entfernt als etwa das Italienische oder Spanische. So gilt das moderne Französische gemeinhin als eine Sprache, in der die Abfolge der Wörter und Wortgruppen im Satz in höherem Maße grammatisch festgelegt ist als noch im sprechsprachlichen Latein der Spätantike (traditionell und etwas missverständlich als Vulgärlatein bezeichnet). Aber auch im Vergleich mit dem mittelalterlichen Französisch und den übrigen romanischen Sprachen sind stärkere syntaktische Festlegungen, etwa auf die Satzgliedabfolge Subjekt > Verb > Objekt (SVO), zu beobachten. This paper takes issue with the view, implicit in much contemporary syntactic literature, that th... more This paper takes issue with the view, implicit in much contemporary syntactic literature, that the determinants of pronominal subject expression are essentially the same across null subject languages, and have remained unchanged from Latin to Old and Modern Peninsular Spanish. In our investigation, we compared Spanish texts from the late thirteenth to early fifteenth centuries with their Latin sources as well as with subsequent translations into Spanish. Our findings suggest that overt pronominal subjects are less frequent in Latin than in Spanish, but more frequent in the Late Middle Ages than in following eras. While the distribution found in Old Spanish texts has sometimes been dismissed as pronominal 'abuse', we argue that it is narrowly constrained by semantic and pragmatic determinants, many of them indeed stable over time. However, our data present evidence of two grammatical changes from Old to Modern Peninsular Spanish, both restricting pronominal overtness in subordinate clauses to focus marking. By way of conclusion, we point out some similarities between Old Spanish and other medieval varieties of Romance.

This chapter surveys the development of philosophical inquiry into deixis from Frege to Perry, Kaplan and Nunberg, and its implications for truth-conditional linguistic semantics. The chapter then outlines a second, more empirically grounded line of research in the tradition of Bühler and Benveniste, focusing on some of the contributions of cognitive, historical and comparative linguistics to our understanding of the lexical semantics of indexical expressions and the mechanisms of deictic reference.
