Chief Lapu Lapu; Rum Barrel
Going through Beachbum Berry REMIXED with the ball n/ chain.
Chief Lapu Lapu
3 oz. orange juice (used Trader Joe's)
2 oz. fresh lemon juice (used juice from a plastic squeezy lemon*)
1 oz sugar syrup
1 oz passion fruit syrup
1.5 oz dark Jamaican rum (used Trader Vic's)
1.5 oz light Puerto Rican rum (used Cruzan)
A promising blend - the passion fruit has a magical way of making drinks go down easy. The OJ has been around for a few weeks, though, and is a little past its prime. Also, this should really be double-strained if your juice has a lot of pulp in it. I like a little pulp in tiki drinks for character, but... mmmm, chewy.
Rum Barrel
3/4 oz fresh lime juice
3/4 oz OJ (TJ's again, put through a mesh strainer this time)
3/4 oz unsweetened pineapple juice
3/4 oz passion fruit juice
3/4 oz sugar syrup
1 oz dark Jamaican rum
1 oz El Dorado Demerara 151
Iteration 1: Hit the end of a bottle of Trader Vic's dark rum about half-way through the pour, used Cruzan Blackstrap for the rest. Blackstrap is a thick, toasty, very molasses-y rum - tasty, but too big for this drink to handle. It made for a good, but not entirely well-balanced Barrel.
Iteration 2: Trader Vic's dark, on its own; forgot the pineapple juice. Man that is a tasty drink. Very smooth, dangerously easy to drink. Would probably be even better with a smoother dark rum. DavE was very sad when he thought the drink was gone... until he pushed down the straw and found more rum at the bottom of the idol. Point is, these drinks are good.
*The plastic squeezy fruit that can be found in the produce section of your supermarket are the best substitute for fresh juice I've found so far. Way better than ReaLemon/ReaLime. Maybe it's the light-proof plastic containers?
