Dr. Pedro Sousa (PhD) is an Associate Professor at Technical University of Lisbon, responsible for the courses in Information and Enterprise Architecture. He is also a researcher at Organizational Engineering Group (CEO), where he has than dozens of articles and presentations on subject of Enterprise Architectures and IT Alignment.

He is also a strategic consultant of link consulting (www.link.pt), an Aitec company. During the past seven years he has been involved in more than 20 professional projects on Enterprise Architectures both in private and public sector in several countries.

How to model people work practices from ontological transactions

This paper proposes a model to represent people´s work from ontological business transactions acc... more This paper proposes a model to represent people´s work from ontological business transactions according to the concepts of Activity Theory and Enterprise Ontology. With this model we aim at providing a comprehensive and structured modelling approach that, at the same time, avoids excessively detailed descriptions of technology-supported activities. The proposed model is complemented with a set of rules that enables the interrelating transactions described with the Enterprise Ontology language and task descriptions based on Activity Theory. An important benefit of this model is enabling the analysis of manifested contradictions to identify the aspects needing changes within organizational activity systems. The proposed model and rules were applied in a study case.

Os sistemas de informação, apesar das importantes evoluções tecnológicas, verifica-se que para mu... more Os sistemas de informação, apesar das importantes evoluções tecnológicas, verifica-se que para muitas organizações não respondem eficazmente às rápidas alterações impostas aos processos de negócio, causando um não alinhamento entre o negócio e os sistemas de informação e, em última instância, reduzindo a capacidade competitiva da organização. Neste artigo discute-se o papel preponderante que a explicitação da Arquitectura dos Sistemas de Informação (ASI) exerce no desenvolvimento de Sistemas de Informação globalmente alinhados com a estratégia e modelo de negócio. Defende-se neste artigo que, de forma a proceder à avaliação ou concepção de uma ASI é fundamental primeiramente definir de uma forma rigorosa e simultaneamente compreensível um conjunto limitado de primitivas que possibilitem a manipulação de uma ASI. Neste sentido, propõe-se um perfil (suportado na linguagem UML) para modelação de ASI aos níveis informacional, aplicacional e tecnológico. Procede-se ainda à aplicação dos conceitos propostos através da apresentação da ASI de uma organização de venda a retalho.

Organizations have existing systems infrastructure that are the result of decades of one-by-one i... more Organizations have existing systems infrastructure that are the result of decades of one-by-one implementations of specific solutions. As organizations, products, customers and technologies continue to change at an increasingly rapid rate, managers have sought overviews that will allow them to understand how Business and IT within their organization fits together. Enterprise Architecture is a representation of the organization to enable the planning of the organization changes. It includes the current and future business objectives, goals, visions, strategies, informational entities, business processes, people, organization structures, application systems, technological infrastructures, and so on. In this paper, we show how the alignment between Business and IT can be disaggregated into four different dimensions and we present some heuristics to ensure such alignment.

Abstract This work reports on the synthesis of CrO2 thin films by atmospheric pressure CVD using ... more Abstract This work reports on the synthesis of CrO2 thin films by atmospheric pressure CVD using chromium trioxide (CrO3) and oxygen. Highly oriented (100) CrO2 films containing highly oriented (0001) Cr2O3 were grown onto Al2O3 (0001) substrates. Films display a sharp magnetic transition at 375 K and a saturation magnetization of 1.92 µB/fu, close to the bulk value of 2 µB/fu for the CrO2.

The approach used is based on cluster analysis, a statistical technique used in many fields of science to group items. In this case, the clusters are modules and the items are classes. A sample of some relatively large object-oriented systems was used in this experiment. The calculation of the dissimilarity between classes is based on their relative couplings combined through six different rating schemes.

This work reports on the synthesis of chromium (III, IV) oxides films by KrF laser-assisted CVD. ... more This work reports on the synthesis of chromium (III, IV) oxides films by KrF laser-assisted CVD. Films were deposited onto sapphire substrates at room temperature by the photodissociation of Cr (CO) 6 in dynamic atmospheres containing oxygen and argon. A study of the processing parameters has shown that partial pressure ratio of O2 to Cr (CO) 6 and laser fluence are the prominent parameters that have to be accurately controlled in order to co-deposit both the crystalline oxide phases.

Ontology Construction: Representing Dietz “Process” and “State” Models Using BPMN Diagrams

Capturing knowledge has always been an objective although known to be costly and time consuming. ... more Capturing knowledge has always been an objective although known to be costly and time consuming. ontologies, being “an explicit specification of a conceptualization,” have tried to capture knowledge within the aspects of concepts (used to represent a domain entity), relations (representing a interaction between the domain concepts), functions (a special case of relations), axioms (which represent true statements) and instances (used to represent domain elements). The Enterprise Ontology, which represents the work on ontologies applied to the enterprise, as proposed initially by Gruber, can be seen as a collection of terms and definitions relevant to business enterprises that can be used as a basis for decision making. A new concept of Enterprise Ontology proposed by Dietz is defined as the realization and implementation essence of an enterprise proposing a distinction world ontology and system ontology. The sequence of actions, according to Dietz can be classified as “datalogical”, “infological” and “ontological” and all become under a Transaction Pattern which consists of four basic states: “request”, “promise”, “state” and “accept”. Further more the author defines four models that can be used to verify the consistency of the actions: “Process”, “Action”, “State” and “Construction” models. The traditional way to model processes, like the BPMN, draw events, activities and data in a sequence of symbols that may not represent completely all the actions in presence and, above all, does not detect and identify consistency between actors and actions. However, BPMN diagrams can also be used to represent various actions and models proposed by Dietz as the transaction, “Process” and “State” diagrams. Both ways of representing have advantages and disadvantages and can be used, either isolated or together to give a deep representation of reality.
