“Whoever weds wants a home” (Quem casa quer casa.) is a popular saying that was also the title of... more “Whoever weds wants a home” (Quem casa quer casa.) is a popular saying that was also the title of a book that formed part of a long ongoing educational programme based on the premises of the Salazar regime. This was a notable work that attempted the promotion of a move towards the modernization of the traditional space of Raul Lino’s Casa Portuguesa (The Portuguese Home) through an accessible illustrated history, especially attractive to the reader inasmuch as it related to the home’s living space. Excerpts from this book will serve as the structure and foundation of this text, and which give rise to a number of questions – or “short stories” – relative to the new sense of the contemporary living space, to the search for new points of reference, or of the meaninglessness of many of these spaces. The final text comprises a critical comparison of these two worlds, a chessboard to be played by the reader; with the choice between the closed model of the traditional home that the architects were trying to break with in the 1950s, and the possibilities that the absence of that model gave to the liberation of the home of our times.

Obliviousness-In contemporary European society the challenge facing the old professions is of cru... more Obliviousness-In contemporary European society the challenge facing the old professions is of crucial importance. Not only how they will be transformed by the new ones but also their search for a new definition and a re-evaluation of their roles in an ever-changing reality. The question of this role and how to play it is the principal question facing the architectural profession as it confronts its future. This is not the time to be investigating intelligent design or technological development for intelligent buildings. In the 70s we believed that those technological wonders would solve all of our problems. Then in the 80s we started to discover not only the new problems we had invented but also the new technologies and wonders of new processes to solve our problems and save us again. Now we have to understand that we need to change behavior, to rethink social, ethical and professional values, and to accept the wonderful qualities of human beings and their intelligence rather than to be continually seeking new technological systems and miracle solutions. These are wonderful, and we have them, but it is us who are the problem, not the systems we invent. So it is a vital time for an urgent review of the role of man (on this planet, at least for the time being), to reorganize societies, reevaluate priorities and to regain the true social meaning, responsibilities and ethical dimension of the professions.

El objetivo de este trabajo de investigacion es hacer un analisis dialogicos a partir de los prin... more El objetivo de este trabajo de investigacion es hacer un analisis dialogicos a partir de los principios enunciados por Mikhai Bakhtin con algunos ensayos de vivienda social contemporanea, mediante un proceso que se inicio en el primer congreso de los arquitectos protugueses en 1948, viniendo a terminar en el periodo revolucionario en 1976. La metodologia parte de los principios de Paul Ricouer, las tres mimesis; el contexto/respuesta -pre-figuracion del proyecto, la compresion de su contexto cultural ymorfologico, y la respuesta que constituye, el texto/realismo configuracion estetica y su adecuacion; la domesticidade la cas, y su celebracion como lugar, el testimonio del uso, adecuacion y adaptacion al tiempo. Los casos de estudio se constituyen como "formas de expresion significantes", desde la intencionalidad de los conceptos de su materializacion, como los que significaran una fractura en el proceso dialogico, introduciendo alteraciones y evoluciones a ese dialogo marcando el proceso y conservando este genero de discurso vivo.

RESUMO-Sobre a inevitabilidade de uma relação entre a arquitectura e o seu contexto cultural e so... more RESUMO-Sobre a inevitabilidade de uma relação entre a arquitectura e o seu contexto cultural e social vem sendo desenvolvido um trabalho de investigação, desde o início dos anos noventa, usando uma estrutura hermenêutica interpretativa a partir do trabalho de Mikhail Bakhtin. Esse trabalho, que Tzvetan Todorov tão bem resume no seu livro The Dialogical Principle, demonstra como um texto-qualquer acto cultural produzido por um autor-só pode ser interpretado e compreendido através de uma análise dialógica entre esse texto e o seu contexto cultural e social. Para a metodologia destes estudos é referência o trabalho de Paul Ricoeur e "La triple mimèsis", sendo considerada uma leitura em três fases: a elaboração do pensamento do texto arquitectónico, da sua concretização pela obra, e do seu uso e destino. Desde um trabalho mais extenso sobre a Habitação Social em Portugal, realizado entre 1993 e 2000, tem-se testado esta estrutura hermenêutica noutros casos de estudo. É o caso deste texto/projecto das "Piscinas das Marés" (Porto, 1961/1966) agora apresentado, que revela um trabalho realizado a partir de entrevistas inéditas a Álvaro Siza sobre o seu projecto. Para além da análise dialógica deste projecto, essencial para conhecer Siza enquanto autor, ao longo do texto a escrita criativa procura ensaiar, na sua geometria e poética, uma relação com a figura da própria arquitectura e poética singular destas piscinas.

Some examples of exemplar praxis of Portuguese architects in the 70s Obliviousness-In the Europea... more Some examples of exemplar praxis of Portuguese architects in the 70s Obliviousness-In the European contemporary society the challenge for the old professions it's a crucial issue. Not only how the will be transformed by the new ones, but mainly by their new meaning and some revaluation of their role in a liquid reality. The role and how to play it, the social interaction, the cultural extend, the artistic and technical dimension, are the main questions about the future of the profession of architects. It's not time to investigate about some new intelligent design or technologic development for intelligent buildings. Those times were the 70`s when we believed that the technical wonders would save our problems. Then in the 80`s we discover the new problems we invented but also the new technologies and the new wonders of another process to solve and to save us, again. Now we have to understand that we need to change behaviours, to rethink social, ethical, professional values, and to accept the wonders of humans and theirs intelligence, instead of the wondering of technical systems or technological miracles. They are wonderful, and we have them, but we are the problem, not the systems we invent. SO it's vital and urgent time to review the role of man (in his own planet, it seems), reorganize societies, priorities, and about professions, perhaps regain the etymological and significant meanings, like valid and true ethical dimension, social meaning and responsibility. Therefore the role of architects and of their architecture, as a major cultural event, with the social responsibility and awareness it must have, as is major ethical obligation, and to find a balance in realistic principals that can ménage a dwelling between politics, economics and financial, and social cultural and poetical design thinking. And all of this must start in Architectural schools that have to be aware of a new kind of dialogic professionals, a generation that must reinstate strong values and meanings. This presentation is all about this concern and to debate this idea of a restart, as to revaluate things that are diminished or numb in the profession, like a loose of memory that had changed the long path of architecture and is history, things like is profound social meaning and human values, that must be a part of its intrinsic " design " , as an ethical etymological reference.
A theoretical and analytical essay from a project-oriented research work with a group of Master s... more A theoretical and analytical essay from a project-oriented research work with a group of Master students concerning a fragment of the city of Lisbon in one of its principal axes – Fontes Pereira de Melo Avenue. A body of critical reflections on the complexity of the city to this day, as a built support of “society’s net” and its “delicate and invisible wires ", as Georg Simmel once wrote about what modern society would become. It is about the meaning of spatial Anthropology as a supporting epistemology to a conscious urban intervention, taking from the writings of Georg Simmel, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Henri Lefebvre and Marc Augé, which offer us a hermeneutic structure profoundly valid for an analytical reading of the complexity of this urban fragment in study. This essay and investigation with this group of finalists of architecture and Master students, will also serve as a warning and a desirable awareness of a reconfiguration of the professional attitude and the praxis of the architect, through a new understanding that will shape the future of this new generation. The beautiful paintings of the sad and lonely modern city of Mario Sironi illustrate it, and the metaphor of Robert Musil novel, "The Man without qualities", complements this essay and its provocations. On the inevitability of a relation between Architecture its cultural and social context, is bein... more On the inevitability of a relation between Architecture its cultural and social context, is being developed an investigation, since the beginning of the Nineties, using a interpretive hermeneutics structure based from the work of Mikhail Bakhtin. This work, that Tzvetan Todorov summarizes so well in its book “The Dialogical Principle”, demonstrates that a text - any cultural act produced by an author - can only be interpreted and be understood through a dialogical analysis between this text, its cultural and social context. For the methodology of these studies the reference is the work of Paul Ricouer of the “Triple mimèsis”, being considered an analysis in three distinct phases: the elaboration of the architectural thought as a text, its concretion in building, and its use and destination. Since a more extensive work, on Social Housing in Portugal carried through between 1993 and 2000, this hermeneutic structure has been tested in different case studies. It is the case of this project/text of “Piscina das marés” (Oporto 1961/66) now presented and that unveils an investigation work carried through from original interviews of Álvaro Siza about is project.
