One popular approach is finding the balance between observation and participation or between distance and proximity (Bensa 1995) and (Naepels, 1998). However, this could be limiting based on the nature of the fieldwork (Kusenbach, 2003). What we are witnessing nowadays is a growth of the militant or double commitment ethnographic research (Le Courant, 2013). This kind of work requires flexibility and adaptability rather than following the roles and standards of the classical methodology. In this intervention, I will shed the light on my filed work experience with a displaced Syrian ethnic minority known as the Syrian Doms, a precarious group that lived in the margins while in Syria and are re-positioned on the margins or within the spectrum of « undeserving migrants » in Istanbul and in Paris. I will attempt to make a comparison between what I call the « failing attempt » to conduct fieldwork in Istanbul and the challenges in wearing different casquettes while conducting the ethnographic work, such as the researcher, the volunteer, the activists and above all the exiled Syrian. Finally, I will visit the question of ethics in and morals in a researching a vulnerable migrant group (Armbruster Laerke, 2008, Becker, 1967) and the emotional burden that accompanies that.

Research amongst the Diaspora poses specific ethical challenges. I will talk about the challenges and difficulties I have faced as a researcher while conducting my field work among a diverse and complex group of refugees. I will talk about my experience having certain advantages and disadvantages while conducting this research. Language plays an important role in doing research in such a demanding field. It is equally important to have enough cultural and background knowledge about your subject of study. When dealing with immigrants coming from ethnic conflicts, especially intra-state ones, it is important to take into account the impact of the conflict’s motivation, and to remember that when national identity is at stake, and when positive peace is hard to achieve, memory takes precedence over the present and is usually used to fuel a belligerent environment (Laurenn, Guyot, 2011: 139). How a researcher positons himself in this kind of context, what strategies and methodologies are required or used. These are very crucial elements in this type of work.
