Lilliput Library 270 update

Guardian Kay has LL270 which has been relocated to 31C Woodland Ave, Mosgiel.

Thank you for sharing Kay – Our Lilliput Library has been part of our lives for quite some time now, and what a journey it’s been! Back at our previous place, nestled in a cul-de-sac, people doubted it would thrive—but they couldn’t have been more wrong. Thanks to a bustling retirement village at the end of the street, our tiny library became a local hotspot! Residents, staff, and visitors made it a daily ritual, swapping books and keeping it brimming with fresh reads.

Now that we’ve moved, the magic continues. Positioned on a popular walking route, it’s been drawing plenty of passersby. When my husband was putting it up, people stopped to say they loved the idea and couldn’t wait to use it. Seeing it come to life in our new neighbourhood fills me with so much joy—whether people are browsing, taking a book, or leaving one behind, every interaction makes my heart smile!

Lilliput Library 398

Please welcome Lilliput Library 398 to the Lilliput whanau. It’s now on site at 47 Fernbrook Road Oamaru North, Oamaru and looked after by Guardian Mandy. Being a steampunk fan and living in the steampunk capital of NZ the decoration on the library is very apt. Thanks to Grant S for the terrific artwork. Welcome Mandy.

Lilliput Library 395

Today I received a moving message from Stuart McEachen – “Please register our Lilliput Library into your group. I built it and my wife Anne painted and decorated it in memory of our daughter Halie who passed away from MS 9 months ago.

Halie was partially blind from her MS and could no longer read so she used talking books. However she loved to encourage others to read so had her carer take her to buy second hand books and top up lilliput libraries around Mosgiel. She did this pretty much every week for the last 3 or 4 years. Our Lilliput Library is located at 55 Shaw Street, Mosgiel.”

Welcome to the Lilliput Library whanau Stuart and Anne. It is such a beautiful way to celebrate Halie’s life.

Lilliput Library 393

Good news! One of our ’10 year celebration give away’ Lilliput Libraries is now on site at 93 Scotland St, Roxburgh, outside Fresh Choice.

Guardian Meredith says, “The feedback has been so positive, with lots of supportive comments, and locals wanting to donate books to keep the supply up. Just about all the original books have been replaced by new ones already!! “

The wonderfully vibrant artwork was painted by Meredith. We are delighted to welcome you and your Lilliput to our whanau Meredith.

Because we are turning 10

Lilliput Libraries will be 10 on September 29th.

I’ve decided the most appropriate way to celebrate this birthday is to gift 10 Lilliput Libraries to rural South Island communities. As the libraries appear on site I’ll list them here. BUT in the meantime I’ve asked Guardians to share their thoughts on what their Lilliput Library has meant to them and their community.

Lilliput Library 11 (on site at 248 North Rd, Dunedin ) Guardian James says, The North East Valley Lilliput Library has provided for over 10 years readers in the North East Valley a chance to get their hands on the thrilling reads or share some of our favourites. It has become a place of connection for many in our community and has had many iterations from being in a painted fridge to now in a purpose built library that can be protected from the elements. I am constantly amazed with how many people who access the library daily as I work from my desk at the project over the weekends. Rain, hail or sunshine people are exchanging books, talking to those who may be popping books back or taking them to read…. it is a community builder and connector for some many in the Valley. We are proud to be number 11 and thank Ruth for her support in the early days.

Lilliput Library 392

Please extend the warmest welcome to the latest Lilliput Library in our whanau – Lilliput Library #392. Jane, the event coordinator at the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga-managed and operated property of Old St Paul’s in Wellington emailed me to say they have just installed a Lilliput Library on their fence on 34 Mulgrave Street in Wellington. The artist who painted their library, Kristeen Huey, took inspiration from the stunning stained glass windows of Old St Pauls. It was constructed by David Biles at the Wellington City Menzshed. We are thrilled to have you join our book loving community LL#392.
