Associate Professor of "Albanian Language and Literature" at Department of Humanities, Università del Salento. Her research interests focus on diachronic and synchronic Albanian linguistics, Balkan languages and cultures, translation practices of Albanian into Italian. She is also in the editorial board of `various scientific journals. Since 2007 member of the supervisory board of the II level Master on “Interlingual intercultural mediation in immigration and asylum affairs” at the University of the Salento, 2007-2008 responsible of the project Promoalba, financed through the EU programme INTERREG III-A FESR/CARDS, Italia - Albania 2004/2006, “Development of the institutional and cultural cooperation”, 2010 leading role in the activities of the University of Calabria organizing the Summer School for Balkan languages and Cultures (Network 1 for the intercultural dialogue between Italy and the Balkans).

Sostituti eufemistici nella lingua albanese: i nomi di alcune malattie

In this paper will be analyzed some euphemistic substitutes of names of diseases in the Albanian ... more In this paper will be analyzed some euphemistic substitutes of names of diseases in the Albanian language within the conceptual framework of cognitive linguistics. This analysis is based on data from the history of folkloric traditions of Albania. In many societies, past and present, linguistic censorship is encountered in the physiological field due to psychological, social and cultural causes: in the Albanian linguistic area these linguistic interdiction phenomena have produced a complex network of substitution modules distinguished in formal innovations, involving phonetic, morphological and lexical modifications, and semantic innovations, among which the most frequent are the metonymies.

In the field of linguistic education new methods have been accomplished too. Finally, one became aware that the teacher’s ability and expertise is not solely determined by his pure knowledge of the curriculum but depends in a much higher degree on his educational strategies which enable the student to develop not only a learning aptitude but to create a critical personality. This modern psychoeducational approach which takes into consideration the students’ intellectual development yields tremendous effects in teaching Albanian as L1 and other foreign languages. EN In 2007 we decided to follow the same route through northern Albania which was covered almost ... more EN In 2007 we decided to follow the same route through northern Albania which was covered almost 100 years ago by the victorian traveller Mary Edith Durham, author of the books High Albania and Some Tribal Origins, Laws and Customs of the Balkans. The journey described in High Albania was the culmination of seven years of regular Balkan travels during which she was rewarded with insights into north Albanian life denied to all previous travellers. Unlike her other expeditions in the Balkans, her journey in northern Albania was an existential experience which deeply affected Durham’s perception of the tribespeople’s world and marked a turning point in her life. In the second part of the article some ethnographical aspects which were pointed out by Durham and are still alive in those regions are dealt with. La varietà di San Marzano, unica testimonianza linguistica ancora vitale di un'isola alloglotta c... more La varietà di San Marzano, unica testimonianza linguistica ancora vitale di un'isola alloglotta costituita anticamente da un gruppo di paesi albanofoni localizzati nella provincia di Taranto 2 , è la più vivace della Puglia, dato che negli altri due centri, Chieuti e Casalvecchio di Puglia in provincia di Foggia, lo stato di conservazione della lingua sembra essere più compromesso. Self-translation in translingual writing. Luan Starova’s Albanian and Macedonian versions of the novel ‘The Times of the Goats’

In this contribution I examine the Macedonian and Albanian versions of the novel ‘The Times of th... more In this contribution I examine the Macedonian and Albanian versions of the novel ‘The Times of the Goats’ both written by the Albanian-born writer, poet and translator Luan Starova who lives in the Republic of Macedonia. His prose fiction displays an interesting case of literary translingualism and self-translation, because he uses two working languages in his literary production: Macedonian, the acquired language, and Albanian his mother tongue, learned only in the family context. As a bilingual and bi-cultural mediator, Starova has built a bridge between the Albanian and Macedonian cultures. The process of (re)creation and (re)writing some parts of the text blurs a clear-cut distinction between the ‘original’, represented by the first version of the novel published in Macedonian, and the ‘translated’ version, published in Albanian nine years later. The result is a sort of ‘twin work’ or better said a ‘bicephalic’ text in which the different lexical and stylistic choices are adapt...

We conducted a short analysis of historical, cultural and linguistics aspects based on a corpus o... more We conducted a short analysis of historical, cultural and linguistics aspects based on a corpus of traditional Albanian law (Kanuni i Leke Dukagjinit, Kanuni i Skanderbegut, Kanuni i Dibrës) existing in several areas of northern Albania inhabited by a population of Catholics and Muslims. The survey, aimed at highlighting the features of the vocabulary related to the relations between the sexes, the strong role played by religious institutions and, in particular, by the Catholic Church (as is evident from the events related to the codification of KS), focused on terms related to the most important stages of the existence of the individual in the Kanun society, e.g., legitimate marriages martesa me kunorë , illegitimate unions (pa kunorë), and other lexemes related to this semantic field, e.g. kopil "bastard" lidhun "damned, blasted", used to refer to members of an unmarried Catholic couple. With regard to the latter lexeme, particularly interesting is the development of specific meanings, recorded in the ancient Albanian literature, which emerged in magic-religious contexts ("lent, carnival, sorcery, magic"). There is also a large number of borrowings in the lexicon related to family relationships, particularly in the area of marital infidelity,

Le lingue italiana e albanese a scuola: a più di vent’anni dalle prime migrazioni

– Of all foreign students enrolled in Italian schools, the second largest group is formed by chil... more – Of all foreign students enrolled in Italian schools, the second largest group is formed by children of Albanian origin. This group is internally divided into immigrants of the second generation and those of the ‘generation one and a half’, all with different levels of knowledge of Italian, and of course, different needs. The teachers must keep in mind these different needs to successfully involve these children in lessons, and to improve their education. The author speaks about learning Italian as L1 by highlighting the importance of a positive approach towards the language of origin (in this case Albanian) to ensure the cognitive and linguistic development of the student. A comparison is therefore made between the structures of Albanian and Italian, which will provide the teacher with a better understanding of the linguistic background of their students.

Based on cognitive linguistics, the authors decided to investigate a particular sort of literatur... more Based on cognitive linguistics, the authors decided to investigate a particular sort of literature, two Balkan collections of laws: the Albanian Kanuni i Skenderbeut and the Serbian Zakonik Cara Stefana Dusana . In these texts metaphors and metonymies are reflected in some expressions containing the body-part terms for ‘face’, ‘hand’, and ‘blood’, Alb. faqe , Se. lice , Alb. dore , Se. ruka , and Alb. gjak , Se. krv . Comparison of the Serb and Albanian texts and the occurrences of the cognates gjak and krv (‘blood’), faqe and lice (‘face’) and dore and ruka (‘hand’) shows that, although differences occur, there are similarities.

The linguistic variety of this territory, in particular, was the focus of a fieldwork which was organized in 2013. The many recordings gathered during field trip will be analyzed and published as soon as possible.

In the use of specific terminology one can notice a clear separation between the two sexes which is reflected in the distribution of roles and in using a structured terminology that designates not only roles and conditions, but also other aspects of social life.

L’itinerario descritto in High Albania corono setti lunghi anni di esplorazioni balcaniche nel corso delle quali l’autrice riusci a penetrare nella vita della popolazione locale, un importante esperienza che era invece mancata a tutti i precedenti viaggiatori. A differenza dagli altri viaggi precedenti nei balcani, quello nell’Albania settentrionale costitui un esperienza esistenziale che segno profondamente la percezione della Durham del mondo delle alpi albanesi e rappresento una svolta nella sua vita. Nella seconda parte dell’articolo sono illustrati alcuni fenomeni di carattere etnografico che furono rilevati dalla Durham e che, con nostra grande sorpresa, abbiamo potuto riscontrare sul campo nel corso della spedizione. In many societies, past and present, linguistic censorship is encountered in the physiological field due to psychological, social and cultural causes: in the Albanian linguistic area these linguistic interdiction phenomena have produced a complex network of substitution modules distinguished in formal innovations, involving phonetic, morphological and lexical modifications, and semantic innovations, among which the most frequent are the metonymies.

In these texts metaphors and metonymies are reflected in some expressions containing the body-part terms for ‘face’, ‘hand’, and ‘blood’, Alb. faqe , Se. lice , Alb. dore , Se. ruka , and Alb. gjak , Se. krv . Comparison of the Serb and Albanian texts and the occurrences of the cognates gjak and krv (‘blood’), faqe and lice (‘face’) and dore and ruka (‘hand’) shows that, although differences occur, there are similarities.

The linguistic variety of this territory, in particular, was the focus of a fieldwork which was organized in 2013. The many recordings gathered during field trip will be analyzed and published as soon as possible.

In the use of specific terminology one can notice a clear separation between the two sexes which is reflected in the distribution of roles and in using a structured terminology that designates not only roles and conditions, but also other aspects of social life.

EN In 2007 we decided to follow the same route through northern Albania which was covered almost ... more EN In 2007 we decided to follow the same route through northern Albania which was covered almost 100 years ago by the victorian traveller Mary Edith Durham, author of the books High Albania and Some Tribal Origins, Laws and Customs of the Balkans. The journey described in High Albania was the culmination of seven years of regular Balkan travels during which she was rewarded with insights into north Albanian life denied to all previous travellers. Unlike her other expeditions in the Balkans, her journey in northern Albania was an existential experience which deeply affected Durham’s perception of the tribespeople’s world and marked a turning point in her life. In the second part of the article some ethnographical aspects which were pointed out by Durham and are still alive in those regions are dealt with. Keywords : Balkan Studies; Cultural Studies; Ethnography; Mary Edith Durham; Albania IT Nel 2007 abbiamo deciso di organizzare una spedizione a carattere linguistico e etnogrfico nell’Albania settentrionale sulle orme dell’itinerario percorso quasi 100 anni prima dalla viaggiatrice vittoriana Mary Edith Durham, autrice dei volumi High Albania e Some Tribal Origins, Laws and Customs of the Balkans. L’itinerario descritto in High Albania corono setti lunghi anni di esplorazioni balcaniche nel corso delle quali l’autrice riusci a penetrare nella vita della popolazione locale, un importante esperienza che era invece mancata a tutti i precedenti viaggiatori. A differenza dagli altri viaggi precedenti nei balcani, quello nell’Albania settentrionale costitui un esperienza esistenziale che segno profondamente la percezione della Durham del mondo delle alpi albanesi e rappresento una svolta nella sua vita. Nella seconda parte dell’articolo sono illustrati alcuni fenomeni di carattere etnografico che furono rilevati dalla Durham e che, con nostra grande sorpresa, abbiamo potuto riscontrare sul campo nel corso della spedizione. In this contribution I examine the Macedonian and Albanian versions of the novel 'The Times o... more In this contribution I examine the Macedonian and Albanian versions of the novel 'The Times of the Goats' both written by the Albanian-born writer, poet and translator Luan Starova who lives in the Republic of Macedonia. His prose fiction displays an interesting case of literary translingualism and self-translation, because he uses two working languages in his literary production: Macedonian, the acquired language, and Albanian his mother tongue, learned only in the family context. As a bilingual and bi-cultural mediator, Starova has built a bridge between the Albanian and Macedonian cultures. The process of (re)creation and (re)writing some parts of the text blurs a clear-cut distinction between the 'original', represented by the first version of the novel published in Macedonian, and the 'translated' version, published in Albanian nine years later. La varietà di San Marzano, unica testimonianza linguistica ancora vitale di un'isola alloglotta c... more La varietà di San Marzano, unica testimonianza linguistica ancora vitale di un'isola alloglotta costituita anticamente da un gruppo di paesi albanofoni localizzati nella provincia di Taranto 2 , è la più vivace della Puglia, dato che negli altri due centri, Chieuti e Casalvecchio di Puglia in provincia di Foggia, lo stato di conservazione della lingua sembra essere più compromesso. A livello di pratiche culturali, una particolarità che differenzia questo paese dalle comunità limitrofe è costituita anche dalla «processione devozionale dei carrettieri» che si svolge il 18 marzo, alla vigilia della festa dedicata a San Giuseppe, santo patrono del paese. Una lunga teoria di cavalli carichi di fascine di frasche d'ulivo, bardati a festa, di razze diverse e provenienti anche da altra zone della Puglia, è preceduta da devoti che portano ceppi e rami d'ulivo. Appena i carri arrivano nel sagrato della chiesa, dove è stata collocata la statua del santo, i quadrupedi sono fatti inginocchiare davanti alla sacra immagine per continuare poi in uno spazio dove viene scaricata la legna che servirà per la costruzione di un enorme falò. Come rileva V. Musardo Talò, l'origine del falò e del patronato di San Giuseppe risalirebbe, secondo la tradizione popolare. all'anno 1866, quando all'antivigilia della festa, un evento prodigioso, un violento nubifragio, sradicò numerosi alberi di ulivo fornendo materiale per il falò alla povera gente che non aveva legna da ardere.
