The Robbie Williams biopic really deserved more attention, because although the film takes a bit of getting used to at first, the protagonist soon turns out to be hardly a problem. For a musician’s biopic that is, at its core, told in a classic style, director Michael Gracey manages wonderfully to strike a balance between incorporating the right music and highlighting the relevant periods of his life. A thoroughly entertaining watch, and not just for Robbie’s fans.
Despite Ryan Gosling, the film is actually a real success! Okay, that’s a bit unfair, as his performance and his interaction with the alien Rocky are incredibly entertaining. However, the best and most memorable scene in the film belongs to the lovely Sandra Hüller, who hits the nail on the head with her surprise singing performance.
A small, quiet coming-of-age film that transfers the protagonist from rural, leisurely Japan to the vibrant city life of Tokyo. With all the new influences that she seems to gradually grow with. For me, it is told too superficially; a little more drive would not have done the work any harm.
Anyone expecting another psychologically and emotionally gripping survival drama after the first part will be sorely disappointed. Part 2 is much more suited to horror fans, featuring several explicit torture porn scenes and bloody moments. Nia DaCosta only gives the characters the space that seems relevant to the plot, without characterizing them in any greater depth or detail. In any case, the film leaves me feeling somewhat ambivalent.
