I developed Teaching for Intellectual and Emotional Learning (TIEL), a curriculum design model that helps teachers develop learning experiences for students that foster thinking and social emotional development. TIEL helps students understand their thinking, learning, and social emotional characteristics and provides a language for metacognition.I received my Ed.D. from Teachers College Columbia University after a career that includes teaching preschool, deaf education, elementary general education, gifted education, and college teaching. After teaching for 16 years in the School of Education at Lehman College, City University of New York, located in the Bronx, I am now teaching at King's Academy in Jordan. This co-ed boarding school was established by King Abdullah to provide Jordanian and other Middle Eastern students an education similar to what he received at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. In ten years, the school has become a top international school drawing students from every continent. I coach the teachers in the high school, middle school, and preschool (there is no elementary school) in curriculum design that intentionally includes the teaching of thinking and social emotional learning. I also have the opportunity to teach one class of students each year, which gives me an additional opportunity to transfer theory into daily practice.
