Dr Kahryn Hughes is a Professor in Sociology at the University of Leeds and Director of the Timescapes Archive. She is an internationally recognised scholar in the field of qualitative secondary analysis, lead editor of the publication ‘Qualitative Secondary Analysis’ (SAGE), in which she has developed innovative methods training. As a Senior Fellow of the next phase of the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), she is responsible for all Qualitative Longitudinal and Qualitative Secondary Analysis research methods training for all UK social scientists for this five year period of its investment by the ESRC.

How do researchers manage, or indeed fail to manage, the unexpected, and what new intellectual developments might be made possible through engagement with ‘failures’? Despite the wide and continuing debate over the relevance of particular research methods to evalu... more Despite the wide and continuing debate over the relevance of particular research methods to evaluate complementary therapies, less attention has been given to what outcome criteria and measures to use and/or whether these have a sufficient breadth in perspective.While complementary and alternative medicine researchers have paid heed to the importance of measuring the subjective experience of therapy users, they have left unmeasured the notion of holism, in particular, the measurement of the effect of the interaction between therapist and therapy user, and its underlying philosophy of health and healing.This paper reports on an exploratory, qualitative study aimed at developing a measure of holism and holistic practice. It draws out some key features requiring measurement and provides insight into the emerging measure. Further development work is needed before the measure can be used within research or routine practice.

This report is based on research findings from the project New Forms of Participation: Problem In... more This report is based on research findings from the project New Forms of Participation: Problem Internet Gambling and the Role of the Family. We are grateful to the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RiGT) who funded this project as part of a broader initiative supporting a range of studies examining different aspects of gambling. We also wish to acknowledge the work of Charlotte Kenten, who was employed as a research assistant on this project at the University of Leeds, setting up the online survey and conducting the qualitative in-depth interviews with gamblers and their significant others; and Akira O'Connor who analysed the online survey data. Special thanks are also due to Alison Suckall for her exceptional support during the course of the research and particularly with the dissemination of the findings, and Alison Manson for her design skills in the production of this document.

This chapter will consider the additions and affordances the concept of ‘display’ (Finch 2007) of... more This chapter will consider the additions and affordances the concept of ‘display’ (Finch 2007) offers in analyses of inter-relational responses to problematic Internet gambling. It will also seek to develop this concept by considering it in both the domestic and public sphere and by examining the issues which arise when family members are not available for ‘display’. Display activities in these analyses are not those directly of the gambling, but relate explicitly to family practices of display, and how a perceived absence of these impacts on familial relationships and, often later, of attempts to renew affected relationships.

The increasing requirement of social researchers to archive datasets generated from research, alo... more The increasing requirement of social researchers to archive datasets generated from research, alongside advances in methods of qualitative secondary analysis (or QSA), is creating new opportunities for greater innovation and flexibility in data re-use and approaches to qualitative analysis. One such opportunity is collective secondary data analysis, namely analysis within research teams assembled for the purposes of QSA. Collective QSA facilitated by the new and expanded data landscape described throughout this volume prompts new questions about what the processes in collective QSA might involve, and what are the theoretical and methodological implications of bringing data together via data-sharing. This chapter offers insight into how and why QSA might be conducted collectively and the opportunities that are opened up in sharing data. Vulnerable and marginalised people often feel a lack of ability to change their lives. This study... more Vulnerable and marginalised people often feel a lack of ability to change their lives. This study interviewed mid-life grandparents (35-55yrs) living in localities where there is constrained choice and limited opportunity to build trusting relationships. We found that older generations often try to help improve opportunities for their younger relatives, and play a crucial role in providing care and other forms of support for their grandchildren.
