Rae Beth Gordon is Professor emerita of 19th-century French literature and culture at the University of Connecticut. Her research in late 19th-century psychophysiology, neurology and psychiatry in relation to popular spectacle is explored in 3 books: Why the French love Jerry Lewis, Stanford, 2001; translated as De Charcot à Charlot: Mises en scène du corps pathologique, Presses universitaires de Rennes, 2013 including a DVD of 3 films. She set this research in the context of Darwinism in Dances with Darwin, Ashgate 2009; Routledge, 2016. Her first book, Ornament, Fantasy and Desire in 19th-c. French Literature, Princeton Univ. Press, 1992 (re-published in 2014). Her most recent articles concerning early cinema and burlesque comedy in film have appeared in French journals devoted to cinema, as well as an essay on the stereoscope in a collective volume on Georges Méliès: “Voir double: le fondu-enchainé et le regard sidéré du spectateur,” in Méliès au carrefour des attractions, 2014.
