Welcome to the school of law
It is my privilege to welcome you to the School of Law of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Nestled within the College of Law and Management Studies (CLMS), our School spans both the Howard College campus in Durban and the Pietermaritzburg campus, offering a rich and diverse environment for learning and research. At the heart of our mission is a bold and inspiring vision—to be a leading School of Law in Africa, shaping transformative legal education through excellence in teaching and learning, cutting‑edge research, and engaged scholarship that addresses the complex legal and societal challenges of our time—locally, regionally, and globally. Our School is deeply engaged with the communities that surround our campuses, and we are committed to addressing real-world issues through scholarship, teaching, and community outreach.
Whether your interest lies in Private Law, Public Law, Business Law, or Socio-Legal Studies, you will find a community of passionate academics dedicated to excellence and innovation in legal education. As a full-time undergraduate LLB student, you will follow a carefully curated curriculum designed to equip future legal professionals with both foundational knowledge and practical skills. You will also engage with critical issues of social justice through experiential learning modules such as Clinical Law and Street Law. These programmes offer hands-on legal training while empowering you to serve the broader community in meaningful ways. Throughout your studies, you will have the opportunity to engage with industry experts from some of South Africa’s leading law firms and legal institutions. In addition, you will be encouraged to participate in moot court competitions, which offer a dynamic and competitive environment to sharpen your advocacy, legal reasoning, and courtroom skills—preparing you for future legal practice with confidence and competence.
Through the Centre for Extended Legal Studies (CELS), the School of Law offers two postgraduate diplomas: The Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Relations (PDIR) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Investigation and Criminal Justice (PDFICJ). In addition, the School offers a part-time LLB programme, designed to accommodate individuals who wish to continue working while pursuing their legal studies—offering the flexibility to balance professional and academic commitments.
The School also offers a diverse and dynamic range of Master’s programmes, including:
- LLM in Taxation
- LLM in Medical Law
- LLM in Child Care and Protection
- LLM in Environmental Law
- LLM in Business Law
