I interviewed Elizabeth Moon this morning and will be writing up a story about this affair for my Sunday paper. It will then be available via the Associated Press.

It's a go! We have achieved clusterf*ck! I repeat, clusterf*ck is now available for viewing on SF3's uninviting-Elizabeth-Moon post. And the Islamophobes are out in their quaint and colorful costumes, a-stinkin' up the joint with their witty banter:
Given a pioneering woman author who exactly fits the group's mission, versus a group of faux-aggrieved shit-stirrers who fear and loathe their women so much that wives must stay covered lest they be beaten, which side do you choose?
DAYUM! I have WOMEN! HO THERE! BRING ME WINE, WENCH. *cackles*
Even though we strongly disavow these elements of Ms. Moon's post, we have not rescinded her invitation to be a Guest of Honor, nor do we plan to do so. The WisCon planning committee selected Ms. Moon earlier this year based on her past work and our feeling that she would make a positive contribution to WisCon. After extensive conversation in recent days, and having spoken directly with Ms. Moon on the subject, we continue to believe that her presence will contribute to the Con.
I'm not sure what this person can bring in the way of positive contributions to the con, given that her attitudes seem antithetical to WisCon's stated goals. If the concom have in mind frank discussions about the rising tide of Islamophobia and xenophobia in this country, that's wonderful, but Ms. Moon's presence isn't necessary in order to have them. I'm getting that familiar ticking-time-bomb feeling. I don't like the idea of anyone being silenced, even rabid xenophobes, but surely she has plenty of blogspace and Tea Party rallies in which to express herself.
I have heard about plans to stage a walk-out of Ms. Moon's GoH speech. I like that idea as a demonstration of principle, but if the organizers think that this will cause Ms. Moon to reconsider her bigotry, I'm afraid they'll be disappointed. Ms. Moon's language suggests to me that her xenophobia is long-held and deeply entrenched. Other people's opinions are likely to be completely irrelevant to her.
Take care! I tried to be good, but pandemic weariness made me careless and I did get a mild — emphasis on mild — case of covid after the holidays. Jan 1st, to be precise. I'm feeling pretty decent…
