Gayle Trotter of the "Independent Women's Forum" -- an organization with no members -- testified at the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearing on gun violence that AR-15s (the battlefield weapon used in the Newtown, CT massacre) empower women, because women have no other means to defend themselves. Lawrence O'Donnell points out several lapses of logic and veracity in her testimony.



Look, Ms. Trotter, if you want to make a living shilling for the firearms industry, that's your choice. But using "women's empowerment" to do it is particularly obscene. More women are killed by guns in this country than have ever successfully defended themselves with them, by overwhelming numbers. All you're doing is increasing the body count.

When a conservative Republican like Joe Scarborough is sickened by what you're doing, you might want to reconsider your actions. I've got my issues with Scarborough, but he speaks for me here.

The NRA does not represent responsible gun owners. Personally, I doubt it ever did. It represents insurrectionists, lunatic survivalists, and gun manufacturers who have no compunction about making money over the bodies of dead children. I hope they crash and burn.

So this is going on in my home state right now. Just to be clear, I have no beef with responsible hunters who observe safety regulations and eat what they kill, but these clowns are not that type. Anyone who gets liquored up and heads into the woods (and onto other people's property) to fire indiscriminately at anything that moves in the hope that they'll kill something so they can chop off its head or paws for trophies should be locked up, not subsidized with my tax money. Warning for images of wild animal harm and drunken stupidity.



Did I mention that the leading cause of death among hunters was getting drunk and falling out of trees? Just putting that out there.
