And I think the reason it bugs me so much isn't just the insincerity, but also the fact that I'm actually learning the language. I know what I sound like. I'm not saying people have to give me concrit, you could just not say anything at all. I wouldn't be offended.

I basically hoard femme things like a dragon hoards gold. My closet is full of the most sparkly, pretty things that China has to offer. Half of my clothes are officially skirts and dresses. Firefox keeps wanting to correct 'languisity' to 'singularity' or 'angularity' which feels weirdly apt, but I couldn't tell you why.

Lately, I've felt like I don't fit into the same people or places anymore. Or that they don't fit into me they way they used to (which is the same, only not quite). And I know it's not all the distance's fault, but I feel like it's made it more... noticeable. Something like that. I think it was a long time coming.

Probably because there was a holiday here (something about dragon boats and racing, got lots of free rice cake things) that I didn't pay much attention to because my body was trying to drown me in snot.

I have an awesome story for you, though.

Saturday, me and my mom were at BHG. It's this huge grocery story in this huge mall that carries lots of western goods. Most of it ridiculously overpriced, but still. It's nice to look at.

Anyway, there's also a Chinese deli\/prepared foods section. Most of the things there amount to 1 or 2 USD, so every once in a while we'll choose something that looks interesting just to try it out. If we don't like it, there's no guilt about throwing it away. We end up staring at this section that has noodles and then these cornmeal ball things that are stuffed with some mystery meat (probably pork) and possibly vegetables. I really want the noodles, okay? I love noodles. Anything noodle-y, and I'll probably eat it.

My mother and I then proceed to debate the issue.




Me: That looks good! It looks like something I can eat. (says the kid with all the allergies in the world).

Mom: It could have nuts. They could use peanut oil or some kind of fish sauce.

Me: But it looks good! I can try it. We have benadryl at home, right? (no, btw. as it turns out, we didn't.)

Mom: I don't know. I can't afford to take you to the hospital right now.




We went on like that for a good five minutes until finally I told my mom...



Me: Ask one of the girls behind the counter what it is. At least you'll know and we can look it up at home. It's only maybe 10 yuan.

Mom: [in Mandarin, to a girl behind the counter] What do you call this in Chinese?<\/i>

Girl Behind Counter: [leans over, enunciating very carefully] Chow mein.



I pretty much died. Like, I laughed so loud people started staring at us.


I totally didn't see that coming, but in case you guys were wondering, they have Chinese food in China.

I've taken up running. Not out doors, there's way too much pollution. But our apartment building has a gym, so I make good use of the treadmill. Part of it is because running is great for people who suffer from any form of depression (whoo! endorphins!), another is because I have fuck all to do a lot of them time so I've resorted to becoming a human hamster and running in place.

I don't even know. I don't even know how that'd work. I'm thoroughly amused with myself right now, though.
