I want to ask what the etymology of the dash (hyphen-minus, en, and em dashes), prepended afore a name to form a signature, is. However, because it is a conventional (rather than orthographic) symbol, whose usage spans more than one language (Polish and English, at the least), [1] I want to ensure that it is applicable to this forum. [2]
