Dr Sadek Hamid
I am currently a Research Fellow at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, U.K. I was previously a Senior Research Assistant at the University of Oxford and have been Lecturer in contemporary Islamic Studies Religious Studies, Muslims in Britain and Muslim youth work at the Universities of Liverpool Hope and Chester.
My research interests include British Muslims, Islam in America and Europe, Islamic activism, religious radicalisation, inter-faith relations, religion and public policy. I have written widely on issues related to Islam in Britain, Muslim young people and global variants of Islamic religious revivalism .
I am co-editor of Contemporary British Muslim Arts and Cultural Production: Identity, Belonging and Social Change (Routledge, 2023), Youth Work and Islam: a Leap of Faith for Young People (Sense, 2011), co-editor of Political Muslims: Understanding Youth Resistance in the Global Context, (Syracuse University Press, 2018), Editor of British Muslim Youth: Rhetoric and Realities (Routledge, 2016) co-author of British Muslims: New Directions in Islamic Thought Activism and Creativity( Edinburgh University Press, 2018) and author of the Sufis, Salafis and Islamists: The Contested Ground of British Islamic Activism (I.B Tauris, 2016).

Synopsis:
Young British Muslims continue to generate strong interest. However, much of this attention is framed in negative terms that tend to associate them with criminality, religious extremism or terrorism. Focusing instead on other aspects of being young, Muslim and British, this volume takes a multidisciplinary approach that seeks to normalise the subjects and focus on their everyday lived realities.
Structured into three sections, the collection begins by contextualising the study of young British Muslims before addressing the sensitive social issues highlighted in the media and finally focusing on a variety of case studies which investigate previously unexplored lived experiences of these young people. With contributions from scholars of religion, media and criminology, as well as current and former practitioners within youth and social work contexts, Young British Muslims: Between Rhetoric and Real Lives will appeal to scholars and researchers with an interest in the fastest growing, most profiled minority demographic in the UK.
