ABSTRACT Mating system and genetic variability were studied in a southern and a northern populati... more ABSTRACT Mating system and genetic variability were studied in a southern and a northern population of Picea abies, in Czechoslovakia and Finland. Both populations had considerable genetic variability, with expected heterozygosities of 0.17 and 0.23, respectively, at nine loci. The two distant populations were more differentiated (Gst = 0.12) than has been found in studies on Scandinavian Picea abies. Both populations had a considerable degree of partial selfing, with estimates of outcrossing of 0.83 and 0.74 in the populations from Czechoslovakia and Finland, respectively.

Purified chloroplast DNA (cp DNA) extracts from 31 species of Picea and two species of Pinus (P. ... more Purified chloroplast DNA (cp DNA) extracts from 31 species of Picea and two species of Pinus (P. sylvestris and P. cembra) were digested with eight restriction endo‐nucleases, separated by electrophoresis and scored for restriction fragment length polymorphisms. The resulting data was analyzed phenetically and cladistically. The phenetic analysis indicated lower levels of cpDNA differentiation within Picea than within Pinus and lower levels of differentiation among Eurasian than among North‐American Picea species. The cladistic analysis, using Pinus sylvestris as an outgroup, suggested monophyly for Picea and resolved several monophyletic groups among the 31 species of Picea. An assessment of biogeographic events, based on the cladogram, suggests that Picea originated in North‐America and that the colonization of Eurasia occurred through separate, intercontinental migrations.

The proportion of pollen gametes with genotypes that could not have been produced by parental clones was determined and used as a minimum estimate of external pollen contamination. We found that 37.8% of analysed embryos were fertilized by external pollen.

Allozyme variation was examined in 22 populations of Pinus densiflora (Sieb. et Zucc.) and four g... more Allozyme variation was examined in 22 populations of Pinus densiflora (Sieb. et Zucc.) and four geographic varieties of P. sylvestris (L.): var 'lapponica' (Fries, Hartman), var 'armena' (Komarov), var 'mongolica' (Litvinov) and vat 'sylvestriformis' (Takenouchi). In addition, we developed paternal chloroplast (cp) DNA markers that distinguish P. densiflora from vat 'lapponica', var 'armena' and var 'mongolica'. UPGMA cluster analysis based on Nei's distances between all pairwise combinations of the 22 populations revealed patterns corresponding strictly to geographic origin and taxonomic status. Analysis of allozyme variation in var 'lapponica', var 'armena' and var 'mongolica' demonstrated a high level of intrapopulational variability but a low level of interpopulational differentiation. It appears that the late Pleistocene blending of genetically diverse populations was responsible for the observed variation patterns. The constructed phylogenetic trees also showed late divergence of these three varieties. The var 'sylvestriformis' was genetically distinct from the other three P. sylvestris varieties. The genetic distances separating var 'sylvestriformis' from P. densiflora and the other taxa lend support to a separate taxonomic status for var 'sylvestriformis' and a close relation with P. densiflora. We found that var 'sylvestriforrnis' harbors admixtures of allozymes and cpDNA from both P. sylvestris and P, densiflora, which suggests an introgressive nature of this variety. Levels of intrapopulational variability were, similar in P. syIvestris and P. densiflora, but interpopulational differentiation was much higher in P, densiflora. In the constructed phylogenetic trees, populations of this species were characterized by relatively long internode distances and branch lengths. The present results suggest Correspondence to: A.E.
