The field of musicology has long focused on music history and music structure; however, research focusing on music as an activity-"musicking" (Small, 1998), including and not limited to performance analyses (Cook, 2007) and performers' interpretations of the piece (Cook, 2013)-have gained more attention in recent years. More specifically, according to the most recent performance studies, the ethnographic approach to performance in the field of music theory and analysis has received considerable attention: More recent scholarship has witnessed welcome efforts to formulate models of "performer's

Through the analysis of “oral response practice”, we found that when students code-switch from English to Japanese, they express different types of troubles they are facing, such as word-search, planning, evaluation, and time-management. We also found the other group members of the activity sometimes participate in the production of responses, which may result in a collaborative construction of speech.

Most of our efforts so far have focused on data collection, with some rudimentary manual transcriptions of a very limited part of the collected utterances. The raw audio and video recordings of students interacting in English and Japanese come to a total of 200 hours or so per semester, as seven to eleven groups of students engage in the activity for 25 to 30 minutes with a 90-minute class that convene 15 times in a semester. The core data corresponds roughly to one third or one fifth of these raw materials. The portion manually transcribed so far represents very roughly about 1/20 of the core data to be compiled and the transcription came to 150,000 words including 10% of filler-like expressions. This suggests that when we transcribe the entire core data among the collected spoken utterances, it will come to something like 3,000,000 words. In this presentation, we describe our data collection and audio transcription interface and then touch upon potentials for new research that can be conducted on the basis of the collected data. We propose a new way to look at some of the natures of spontaneously spoken English by Japanese learners in interactive settings.

We will collect more than 200 hours of recordings over six years, publishing the corpus in 2022. To construct such a huge corpus, we have conducted a pilot project, one of whose purposes is to establish a corpus design for collecting various kinds of everyday conversations in a balanced manner. For this purpose, we conducted a survey of everyday conversational behavior, with about 250 adults, in order to reveal how diverse our everyday conversational behavior is and to build an empirical foundation for corpus design. The questionnaire included when, where, how long, with whom, and in what kind of activity informants were engaged in conversations. We found that ordinary conversations show the following tendencies: i) they mainly consist of chats, business talks, and consultations; ii) in general, the number of part...

The concept is often invoked in music studies, but the nature and types of actions and agents are defined differently in various research frameworks. This study integrates sociocultural and metaphorical approaches to investigate the interactions between work and performer agencies in the verbal communication and gestural exchanges that take place during ensemble rehearsal. The chapter begins with an overview of current theories of musical agency and traces their implications for research on ensemble music-making. Next, using conversational segments drawn from two empirical case studies of professional string quartets as illustrations, the chapter considers agential roles and ascriptions that are not accounted for in current paradigms. In closing, the chapter explores the theoretical implications of the research outcome and proposes a new ...

In this paper, we focus on one linguistic resource in Japanese for modulating the stance displayed through other-repetition. That is, addition of the pragmatic particle ne, a marker of shared information between the speaker and the hearer, at the end of a repeated item. Using the framework of Interactional Linguistics, we investigate the interactional characteristics of ne-marked other-repetitions in Japanese conversation through comparison with other-repetitions that have no particle. Based on an examination of naturally occurring conversation, we argue that while other-repetition with no particle indicates that the speaker has received something he or she did not recognized, other-repetition with ne indexes that the speaker already has some knowledge regarding the repeated item. Thus, when used as a third-position response following an adjacency pair ( Schegloff, 2007 ), other-repetition with ne can indicate that the information provided in the prior turn is nothing new or unexpected. In addition, when used as a second-position response, ne-added other-repetition can express that the repeated item is something that he or she already knows and that he or she has a shared understanding with the prior speaker.
