In this study, in order to consider all factors and rating criteria, a combination of geographic information systems and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) was used to determine the best sites for disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Mahshahr County, Iran. In order to the decision making for landfill siting a structural hierarchy formed and the most important criteria: surface water, sensitive ecosystems, land cover, urban and rural areas, land uses, distance to roads, slope and land type were chosen according to standards and regulations. Each criterion was evaluated by rating methods. In the next step the relative importance of criteria to each other was determined by AHP. Land suitability for landfill was evaluated by simple additive weighting method. According to the landfill suitability map, the study area classified to four categories: high, moderate, low and very low suitability areas, which represented 18.6%, 20.3%, 1.6 and 0.8% of the study area respectively. The other 58.7% of the study area was determined to be completely unsuitable for landfill. By considering the parameters, such as the required area for landfill, distance to MSW generation points, and political and management issues, and consulting with municipalities managers in the study area, six sites were chosen for site visiting. The result of field study showed that it is a supplementary, and necessary, step in finding the best candidate landfill site from land with high suitability.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are widely under research and being more and more used in many industrial fie... more Ionic liquids (ILs) are widely under research and being more and more used in many industrial fields due to their unique properties. The knowledge of physicochemical properties of ILs is vital for their applications. Viscosity is one of the most important physical properties of ILs. Since the experimental measurement of viscosity is expensive, time consuming and cumbersome, seeking for a reliable and accurate model for predicting the viscosity of IL mixtures is essential. To this end, a large data bank, covering a wide range of ternary mixtures containing ILs, was collected from open literature sources. Afterwards, a rigorous modeling approach, namely least square support vector machine (LSSVM) was employed to predict the viscosity of ternary mixtures. The parameters of the model were optimized using coupled simulated annealing (CSA) optimization tool. The inputs of the model are boiling point temperature, molecular weight and composition of mixture compounds. Statistical and graphical error analyses indicated that the developed model can satisfactorily predict ternary mixture viscosity. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the proposed model is able to predict the actual physical trend of viscosity with variation of molecular weight and boiling point of ILs, ethanol content and water content. Furthermore, the relevancy factor demonstrated that the average boiling point of the ternary mixture has the greatest impact on the viscosity. Finally, the Leverage approach was performed, in which the statistical Hat matrix, Williams Plot, and the residuals of the model results led to recognition of the probable outliers. All the experimental data seem to be reliable except five data points. Thus, the developed model could be reliable for the prediction of ternary mixture viscosity in its applicability domain.

The effect of milling time on this process was investigated. Milling process was done powder mixture at a rotation speed of 250 rpm for different times. Results showed that VCx has been synthesized after 1 hour of milling. The characterization of phase formation, crystallite size, strain percentage and lattice parameter was done by XRD analysis. To study the morphological evolution and determination of particle size of nanocomposite powders, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) was used. The crystallite size and lattice strain were determined by Williamson-Hall method. XRD study showed that for 6 h milling, the width of V4C3 peaks increased while the crystallite size of these phases decreased to about 27nm. ABSTRACT In this study, a Z-source alternating current-to-alternating current (AC–AC) converter w... more ABSTRACT In this study, a Z-source alternating current-to-alternating current (AC–AC) converter with a specific topology, which can provide both buck and boost modes, is investigated. This converter, which can be implemented easily, utilizes only two switches with complemented commands. A comparison between the Z-source AC–AC converter and a conventional thyristor voltage controlled one is presented here, and it shows that in the most areas, the Z-source converter provides a faster response and lower total harmonic distortion of the output currents than the conventional one. Moreover, the Z-source converter is also extended to the multiphase systems. In addition, a new arrangement of this converter is proposed here to remove the isolated single-phase sources. Furthermore, an open-loop method is proposed for soft-starting applications. Finally, a closed-loop control system is also suggested for a three-phase Z-source converter to soft start and control the speed of an induction motor. Vanadium pentoxide, calcium and carbon black were placed in a planetary ball mill and sampled after different milling times. The activated powders were synthesized by microwave heating at temperatures 800°C. XRD and FESEM were used for characterization of synthesized powder. On the basis of obtained results, the synthesized V 8 C 7 crystallites were in the scale of nanometers and the lattice parameter had some deviation from the standard value. V... more In this study, nano crystalline vanadium carbide was synthesized by mechanical alloying method. V 2 O 5 , C and Mg powders were placed in a planetary ball mill and sampled after different milling times. XRD and FESEM were used for characterization of synthesized powder. Studies showed that crystalline V 8 C 7 has been synthesized by 24 h milling and subsequently heat treatment at 800°C. It was concluded that the V 8 C 7 crystallites were nano sized and the lattice parameter deviated slightly from the standard size. Furthermore, milling led to increase in strain and decrease of vanadium carbide particle size.

In this configuration, a thyristor-controlled series capacitance (TCSC) is added to the conventional HFC to provide continuous variation in the HFC reactance. Moreover, simple closed-loop control methods are designed by considering all the practical constraints of TCSC for this improved HFC (IHFC) and another hybrid arrangement, which is called hybrid power flow controller. Furthermore, to compare and highlight features of the IHFC, simulation results of the designed controllers are carried out in different operating conditions and disturbances. This study also provides a quantitative comparison of various hybrid flexible AC transmission system devices.

In this research, the feasibility of adding mechanically activated nano-crystalline Al 2 O 3 part... more In this research, the feasibility of adding mechanically activated nano-crystalline Al 2 O 3 particles into aluminum matrix was investigated. For this purpose, Al 2 O 3 powder was milled in a high-energy ball mill for 20 h. Subsequently, 1 wt.% of Al 2 O 3 powder was added to molten Al. Then microstructure, powder characterizations and mechanical and wear properties of this composite were studied. Peak broadening of the diffraction patterns clearly showed that Al 2 O 3 crystallites were in the nanometer scale after milling. Furthermore, distributing a small amount of Al 2 O 3 particles on the aluminum matrix was a heterogeneous feature and the grain size of the matrix consequently decreased. Due to the existence of hard particles and hence smaller crystalline size, hardness, yield strength and wear resistance of Al-Al 2 O 3 composite significantly rised.

This paper proposes a modified switching strategy for hybrid flow controller (HFC) as a power flo... more This paper proposes a modified switching strategy for hybrid flow controller (HFC) as a power flow controller. The current strategies for HFC are suitable only for specific situations and generally are not applicable. The modified strategy is implemented by using the logical operators as a classical controller. Simulation results on two situations, representing all the possible states of the HFC, verify its performance. The fluctuations of the transferred active power caused by switching the HFC might have an adverse effect on the decision of the controller as well as the stability of the system. To mitigate the fluctuations, a fuzzy logic controller is designed, and also a comparison with the classical controller is provided.

ABSTRACT This study presents classical direct torque control (DTC) performance of line-start perm... more ABSTRACT This study presents classical direct torque control (DTC) performance of line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM). An LSPMSM is designed based on an actual IM with finite element analysis. To present an in-depth analysis, a comparison of a simple classical DTC performance of a three-phase four-pole LSPMSM and its equal induction motor (IM) in different conditions is provided. In addition, to evaluate the effectiveness of this method, simulation results from matlab/Simulink software are presented for both line-starting and adjustable speed drive applications under the same conditions. Furthermore, both nominal voltage and voltage sag conditions are simulated for the aforementioned situations, and it shows that on one hand, the starting and synchronization process of LSPMSM often encounter problems for voltage sag conditions. On the other hand, a better transient and steady-state response of an LSPMSM drive is obtained rather than that of IM, especially for voltage sag conditions. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
