Over the years different topics have been the subject of study, ranging from Burgundian residences to lost religious heritage, thus addressing a range of methodological difficulties specific to dealing with historic architecture using modern technologies. As Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) has found its way to a broader audience over the last few years, attention must be paid to the methodology and the communication of these reconstructions towards a wider audience. Using these new technologies inevitably changes the perspective of the viewer, shifting from a distant observer to a close inspector (keeping in mind that many of the reconstructed elements were never supposed to be seen up close). Together with these new approaches new means of communication and visualization need to be realized, fitting ...

Across borders: architecture and knowledge in the seventeenth-century southern low countries

Most European traders, conquerors and colonists sought to build familiar settlements in unfamilia... more Most European traders, conquerors and colonists sought to build familiar settlements in unfamiliar surroundings. These ambitions were often challenged by scarcity of known building materials, skilled labour and the demands of alien climatic conditions. To find suitable translations of European building techniques, observation of local construction methods and their selective appropriation solved many such difficulties. This paper is largely based on articles in military and learned journals published in Britain and India in which non-European building practices and materials were described and illustrated not as exotic curiosities but as ideas worthy of emulation, until they were set aside in favour of the supposedly superior products of European mechanical industry and scientific knowledge. The paper will focus on three Indian modes of building that gained wide admiration and comment beyond the subcontinent. These are: Superior Chunam mortars capable of fine finishes and waterproofing, ingenious vaulting techniques with reduced lateral thrust erected with minimal falsework and well foundations, a reliable alternative to piling.

However, a closer and more thorough analysis of Titian’s own experimentation with the placement of patrons in single-panel altarpieces would have revealed an artist who was deeply interested in the patron’s mediation between devotional figures and the depicted architectural spaces. Her focus on aberration confuses the argument. In addition, van Kessel’s concern with the lifelike appearance of the depicted figures in the other artworks considered minimizes the extent to which she can acknowledge the complexity of the living image as a trope. Van Kessel’s book provides a comprehensive and well-researched study of how sixteenth-century Venetians used and engaged with artworks, a study that will be useful and fascinating to Venezianisti in all disciplines, as well as to those scholars who have benefited already from related studies by Fredrika Jacobs and Megan Holmes, among others.
