I am a research fellow at “REVENANT: Revivals of Empire: Nostalgia, Amnesia, Tribulation” project (European Research Council, ERC Grant #101002908) at the University of Rijeka, Croatia, and a PhD researcher at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. My doctoral project combines memory studies with contextual theology in the Balkans with a special focus on the Bosnian Franciscan tradition and the leading Catholic figures of 19th century modernity in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This article approaches the question of whose interests the internet serves through the prism of ... more This article approaches the question of whose interests the internet serves through the prism of online assemblies in the SouthEast Europe (SEE) region. In order to answer this question, the article uses four connected yet different angles. The first part explores opportunities and limitations of international laws, as well as national laws in the SEE region. Furthermore, the article discusses the role of the state in providing and facilitating access to the internet, that is, enabling the space for online assemblies in the SEE region. The article takes into account the variety of actors in the field of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly online, paying special attention to internet service providers. Finally, the article analyses the surveillance of the internet activities and security and its relation with online and offline assemblies. The article uses all four these aspects to explore the situations in the SEE region. The article specifically focuses on four countries, namely, three former Yugoslav republics: Croatia-a European Union member since 2013; Serbia-a candidate country exercising control over the internet the most; Bosnia and Herzegovina-a country aspiring to become a candidate but in which progress is burdened by divisions and legacy of the war; and Turkey, which has one of the most illustrative examples of stifling freedom of expression and assembly, and the influence of which on the Balkans is also visible.

Religious Education between Segregation and Inclusion: Towards Interfaith Critical Pedagogy in Bosnia and Herzegovina

A return of religious instructions in public schools in the post-Yugoslav countries reflects the ... more A return of religious instructions in public schools in the post-Yugoslav countries reflects the failure of the theory of secularization which predicted disappearance of religious importance in public sphere. Bosnia and Herzegovina introduced classes of confessional education during wartime in 1994, and since then, Muslim, Catholic and Serbian Orthodox instructions in schools have been important pillars for nation building ideologies and for filling identity gaps of three ‘constituent national groups’ in B&H – Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs. This MA thesis challenges segregationist elements of confessional education with development of the framework for interfaith critical pedagogy as a viable bottom-up pedagogical practice for resisting perpetuated ethnic oppressions from within the system. After providing theoretical, historical and legal perspectives of religious education in general and confessional education in B&H in particular, the last part analyses the case study “World Ethos in School” to examine existing pedagogical project advocating for inclusion of universal ethical values in the school classes. The project is described as a positive practice for change from below, and the interviews conducted with teachers have demonstrated their inclusive attitudes toward values of different religious and secular traditions. However, the analysis also displays a lack of critical comprehension towards phenomenon of nationalized faith that consequently positions ethnic oppressions as normalized cultural and social fact.
