This article attempts to show how ideas of an emerging Polish national style in architecture were developed through the creativity of architects who were concerned with the direction that reconstruction would take after years of occupation and the First World War. It presents the efforts that were made through publications and architectural plans in forming the new landscape of a country devastated by wartime. It shows unanimity amongst architects in their ideology, while at the same time variety in their creative interpretations. It presents different approaches to the creation of a national style, in the decade very significant for the Polish culture and architecture, a period following the World War I in the realities of the reborn Second Polish Republic.

The interwar period in Poland witnessed increased building investments connected with the reconstruction of the country after the Great War and over a hundred year period of partitions. In particular, this reconstruction concerned strategic railway facilities. Enthusiasm for a long-waited independence and the possibility – forced by the necessity of restoration – to rearrange the homeland’s landscape full of occupant-built objects resulted in projects emphasizing their Polishness. The desire to underline the fact that the new objects are based on Polish traditions is reflected in the so called ‘national style’ of architecture visible in numerous railway stations of the 1920s. Public sentiments were expressed by an intensified use of national motives and other elements of decoration symbolizing Poland. The main topic of the present article is artistic and architectural decoration of railway objects of 1920s ideologically referring to national symbols. The article offers a review of railway stations that were built, rebuilt or reconstructed after the First World War and whose decorative elements reflect diverse interpretations of the national symbol. Moreover, in order to provide a broader background, several examples from earlier and subsequent periods are presented. As a result, the article forms a part of a wider discourse on the relations between art and the state, and art at the service of the state and the society. Also, the article is a continuation of the last year’s publication ‘Piękne, użyteczne, zbędne…obiekty kolejowe w Polsce’ on the national style in the architecture of the 1920s railway stations. Dwudziestolecie międzywojenne jest okresem wzmożonych inwestycji budowlanych związanych z odbudową kraju po Wielkiej Wojnie i ponad stuletnim okresie zaborów. Dotyczy to w szczególny sposób strategicznych obiektów kolejowych. Entuzjazm związany długo oczekiwanym odzyskaniem niepodległości oraz, wymuszona koniecznością odbudowy, możliwość przekształcenia krajobrazu ojczyzny naznaczonego licznymi obiektami wzniesionymi przez zaborców, zaowocowały realizacjami podkreślającymi przynależność do kraju. Pragnienie zaznaczenia „polskości” budowanych obiektów wyrażało się w wyborze formy podporządkowanej zasadom tzw. „stylu narodowego”, kształtującego architekturę wielu dworców kolejowych pierwszego dziesięciolecia międzywojnia. Wyrazem społecznych nastrojów było także zintensyfikowane stosowanie znaków narodowych i innych elementów dekoracji, w przeróżny sposób symbolizujących nasz kraj. Przedmiotem artykułu jest plastyczno-architektoniczny wystrój obiektów kolejowych dwudziestolecia międzywojennego, nawiązujący ideowo do symboliki narodowej. Dokonano w nim przeglądu wzniesionych, odbudowanych i przebudowanych po I wojnie budynków dworcowych, które w swoim nowym wystroju artystyczno-architektonicznym otrzymały szczególne znaki przynależności do państwa w postaci różnorodnych interpretacji polskiego symbolu narodowego. W ramach pewnego uzupełnienia i określenia szerszego tła, uwzględniono także kilka przykładów wcześniejszych i późniejszych. Artykuł wpisuje się tym samym w wielopłaszczyznowy dyskurs dotyczący relacji sztuka a państwo, sztuka w służbie państwa i narodu. Stanowi także ideową kontynuację publikacji zamieszczonej w ubiegłorocznym tomie „Piękne, użyteczne, zbędne…obiekty kolejowe w Polsce”, traktującej o stylu narodowym w architekturze dworców dwudziestolecia.

W artykule poruszono zagadnienie odbudowy i przebudowy budynków dworcowych po zniszczeniach dokonanych podczas I wojny światowej. Przedstawiono także stan linii i obiektów kolejowych, odziedziczonych przez Rzeczpospolitą po latach zaborów i zbrojnych konfliktów. Bazując na publikacjach z okresu międzywojennego, szczególny nacisk położono na ideowe podłoże kształtowania formy architektonicznej odbudowywanych obiektów zgodnie z założeniami polskiego stylu narodowego. Ilustrację tematu stanowi charakterystyka licznych przykładów odbudowanych, przebudowanych i nowo wzniesionych dworców z terenów objętych administracją wileńskiej i warszawskiej dyrekcji kolei. Wyboru obszaru badań dokonano na podstawie analizy wielkości zniszczeń i zakresu odbudowy.

W artykule poruszono zagadnienie roli architektury i sztuki sakralnej w dziele tworzenia kultury oraz problem zależności, związków i wzajemnego oddziaływania znamiennych dla danego czasu tendencji kulturowych i kierunków rozwoju sakralnego budownictwa. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono współczesnej sztuce, architekturze i kulturze.

Over the centuries, the Christian altar, where the Eucharistis performed and which invariably constitutes the heart and the focal point of the liturgic congregation, has undergone numerous transformations. They ought to be interpreted through the key of accentuating various dimensions of Eucharistic spirituality, fathoming the essence of the sacrament and the care for its worthy celebration, including the changing artistic and cultural tendencies, and searching for the forms that serve the purposes of the apostolic mission of the Church. The abundance of symbolism attributed to the altar and its theological grounds is by no means inferior to the variety of ‘altar forms reflecting not only the motives of human imagination, but also the principles stemming from a clear comprehension of the mystery’ (Ecclesia de Eucharistia 50). The purpose of the article is to trace back the transformations of the form and shape of the Lord’s Table and its artistic decoration, in the context of the symbolic and theological tenor of the altar in reference to the transformations of the Eucharist spirituality, in view of studies on the history of art and the Church, liturgical regulations and Church documentation. The paper focuses mainly upon the central altar within the Roman Catholic Church, with the richness of forms and shapes of its artistic decoration. Timewise, it includes the whole history of the development of the cult of Christianity, emphasising both the changeability and continuity of the transformations within the liturgic sphere, and a permanent and yet variably expressed altarocentrism.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest forma architektoniczna dworców kolejowych wzniesionych w pierwszych latach po odzyskaniu przez Polskę niepodległości, w związku z budową największej inwestycji kolejowej okresu międzywojennego - magistrali węglowej, łączącej górnicze zakłady na Śląsku z portami morskimi w Gdańsku i Gdyni. Omawiane w opracowaniu obiekty stanowią w zasadniczej mierze realizację kilku, przygotowanych w ramach inwestycji, projektów typowych, aczkolwiek są pośród nich także projekty indywidualne. W artykule poruszono także zagadnienie roli konkursów architektonicznych i zaangażowania zawodowych architektów przy projektowaniu obiektów kolejowych. Czas przełomu lat 20. i 30. jest okresem schyłkowym stylistyki narodowej w architekturze, w której coraz mocniej do głosu dochodzą modernistyczne tendencje funkcjonalistyczne, co wyraźnie uwidacznia się w kolejnych etapach przedmiotowej inwestycji.

The paper presents an extract of forming the principles of perspective construction, construction which had formidable influence on the development and course of shaping European painting. It deals with Albrecht Dürer, his output as an art theorist and one of the greatest artists of the north.

The article concerns the question of the use and interpretation of forms connoted with Polish manor house in the early XX and XXI century architecture. Firstly, the author discusses residential buildings whose form refers to the Polish cottage style. Secondly, the article presents some examples and points at the ideological sources of drawing inspiration from this type of historical style in the interwar period. Finally, the author attempts to analyse contemporary projects inspired by the archetype of the Polish manor house, and juxtaposes them with the architecture of a century ago.

The paper analyzes different examples and diverse ways and methods of planned intervention for the regeneration of distres sed city areas in connection with the social and eco nomic problems. Author points up the value of care about archi tectural and cultural heri tage and primarily about the tow nspe ople, who should be the main bene ficiary of all interventions; shows off that basing on lessons learned from the preceding ex pe rien ces of our European neighbors we can make our own projects.

Celem artykułu jest pochylenie się nad zagadnieniem współczesnych tendencji dotyczących definiowania i rozumienia pojęcia miasta jako struktury materialnej i społecznej, ze wskazaniem na znaczne przeciążenie w kierunku aspektu społecznego; zatrzymanie się nad problemami relacji twórca - odbiorca w budowaniu i kreowaniu przestrzeni miejskiej, a także rozumienia roli profesjonalistów w procesie projektowania form  oraz kształtowania, rozwijania, poznawania i definiowania społecznych potrzeb i oczekiwań. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono aspektowi kulturowemu w kształtowaniu i utrzymywaniu tożsamości miasta. Pytanie o zasadnicze rozumienie istoty miasta oraz tożsamość zawodową urbanisty i jego misję dotyczy szczególnie pokolenia pobierającego obecnie nauki, czyli przyszłych projektantów miast. W praktyce dydaktycznej autorka spotyka się z nadinterpretacją treści wykładów i publikacji Jana Gehla oraz tez stawianych przez organizację ‘Project for Public Spaces’. Interpretacja polegająca na zawężeniu roli zarówno projektu architektonicznego jak i urbanistycznego do pojęcia „ram” miejsca publicznych wydarzeń prowadzi do degradacji ich znaczenia, do pomijania aspektu piękna na rzecz aktywności, komfortu, dostępności i funkcjonalności oraz wypierania atrybutu trwałości przez zmienność i tymczasowość. Autorka doszukuje się przyczyn niedoceniania roli architektury jako zasadniczego tworzywa urbanistycznego w identyfikowaniu jej z wielkogabarytowymi formami niewpisanymi w kontekst otoczenia. Zwraca uwagę na wartość trwałych form budujących i podtrzymujących kulturowy charakter miasta, a jednocześnie odpowiadających na wyzwanie „tworzenia miejsca”.

The main purpose of this article is to investigate on modern trends concerning defining and recognizing the city as a material and social structure, the problem of overemphasising the social aspect, a creator – recipient relationship in the creation of an urban space; the role of a professional in a design process; and on shaping, developing, recognizing and defining social needs and expectations. The special attention was focused on a cultural aspect of creating and maintaining  urban identity. The problem with a fundamental understanding the city and professional identity of an urban planner especially concerns a new generation of students - future urban planners. The author, due to her teaching experience, was able to observe more than one case of an overinterpretation of Jan Gehl’s lectures and publications, and of the thesis put forward by New York  foundation “Project for Public Spaces”. Interpretations that limit the role of architectural and urban design to a plan of an area of public events lead to the degradation of the importance of architecture and urban planning, the replacement of beauty by such factors as activeness, comfort, accessibility and functionality; and permanence by the factors of unsteadiness and temporality. The author suggests that the role of architecture as an urban planning instrument is underrated, as it is commonly identified with colossal forms that does not tone in with the surroundings. She underlines the value of non-temporal, permanent forms that create and maintain a cultural character of a city, simultaneously rising to the challenge of “creating a space”.

Artykuł poświęcony jest czterem obiektom podworskim leżącym w obrębie miasta Lublina i będącym obecnie w posiadaniu lubelskich uczelni. Nieliczna grupa wybranych obiektów prezentuje różnorodność funkcji do jakiej zostały przystosowane. W artykule przedstawiono pokrótce historię każdego z dworskich założeń, koncentrując się przede wszystkim na ich losach współczesnych i przekształceniach związanych z przystosowaniem do nowej funkcji. Materiały stanowiące podstawę niniejszego opracowania pochodzą ze zbiorów Wojewódzkiego Urzędu Ochrony Zabytków, Państwowego Archiwum w Lublinie oraz działów administracyjnych poszczególnych uczelni gromadzących dokumentację związaną zarówno z historią jak i bieżącymi modernizacjami i adaptacjami obiektów.

Streszczenie: Artykuł poświęcony jest zapożyczeniom form w architekturze sakralnej II RP. Dokonano w nim analizy porównawczej kościołów wzniesionych w odległych od siebie miejscowościach (diecezja pińska i łódzka), przypisywanych różnym autorom, a wykazujących znaczne podobieństwo formalne. Opracowanie stanowi jednocześnie próbę ustalenia faktycznego autorstwa budowli. Przedstawia także pokrótce powszechną w czasie budowy omawianych kościołów ideę poszukiwania "stylu narodowego", w którym zostały one ukształtowane i ukazuje podobne przykłady powielania form. Wywód oparto na archiwalnym materiale ikonograficznym - fotografiach z lat budowy, projektach oraz aktach pomocnych w rekonstrukcji życiorysu zawodowego twórców. Celem publikacji jest także przybliżenie postaci brzeskiego architekta Bronisława Nielubowicza i wątków pracy twórczej, które w ramach jej przygotowania udało się autorce ustalić.

Abstract: The essay deals with the borrowing of forms in sacred architecture in the Second Polish Republic. The focus of the study is on small places of worship in the Eastern Borderlands and central regions of the Second Polish Republic. A comparative analysis was carried out of churches built in remote locations (Diocese of Pinsk and Łódź), attributed to various architects (B. Nielubowicz and J. Kaban), but showing significant formal similarity. The essay is an attempt to determine the actual provenance of the buildings. It also briefly introduces the prevailing notion during construction work of a search for a "national style" in which the churches were built, and shows similar examples of duplication of forms. The analysis was based on archival iconographic material – photographs from the years of construction and designs and records helpful in the reconstruction of the artists’ professional biographies. An important aid in the establishment of the facts were the memoirs of the little-known Brest architect B. Nielubowicz’s relatives.

Celem artykułu jest prezentacja i wieloaspektowa, krytyczna ocena realizowanej obecnie w Biłgoraju inwestycji określanej mianem „miasteczka na szlaku kultur” bądź „miasteczka kresowego”. Przedmiotowe założenie to współczesna kompozycja, stanowiąca wolną interpretację zabudowy historycznej, pod wieloma względami daleka od faktograficznej wiarygodności, a pretendująca do roli destynacji turystyczno-kulturowej. Mieszkaniowo-usługowe założenie, nawiązujące zewnętrzną formą do tradycyjnej drewnianej małomiasteczkowej architektury regionu, uzupełniane jest – stanowiącymi atrakcje turystyczne – replikami bądź kopiami historycznych obiektów użyteczności publicznej i kultu, charakterystycznych dla etnicznego bogactwa wschodnich obszarów I i II Rzeczypospolitej. Powstający kompleks oceniono zarówno w kontekście roli architektury w budowaniu tożsamości lokalnej i narodowej, jak i niebezpieczeństwa zafałszowania historii na płaszczyźnie edukacyjnej. Analizie poddano formę architektoniczną, układ urbanistyczny i ideowe przesłanki założenia. Zwrócono uwagę na szczytne cele towarzyszące powstaniu kompleksu i ich zbieżność z zamierzeniami architektów kształtujących przed stu laty formy polskiego stylu narodowego. Jednocześnie wykazano negatywne konsekwencje kształtowania swoistej hybrydy historyzującej, ale współczesnej kompozycji z rodzajem skansenu, który powinna cechować rzetelna zgodność z faktografią. Tego typu zabieg doprowadził do stworzenia iluzji autentycznej zabytkowej osady, falsyfikacji oraz popularyzacji zniekształconego obrazu historycznego miasta. Poza analizą in situ, w pracy wykorzystano archiwalny materiał ilustracyjny i tekstowy oraz wyniki badań autentycznej historycznej zabudowy regionu, która stanowić miała wzorzec projektowanego założenia.

The aim of the article is the presentation and critical assessment of a development called “The town on the trail of cultures” or “Borderland Town” currently created in Bilgoraj. The main subject of the research is a contemporary composition, which is a free interpretation of historical architecture, in many respects far from factual credibility, but aspiring to be a tourist and cultural destination. The idea of building these houses and commercial properties was to replicate the traditional wooden small-town architecture of the region. Alongside them, of great interest to tourists, are replicas or copies of historic public buildings and places of worship, characteristic of the ethnic diversity of the eastern areas of the First and Second Polish Republic. The emerging district was evaluated in the context of the role of architecture in building local and national identity and the danger, from an educational point of view, of falsifying history. The architectural form and urban layout of the project, as well as its ideational premises was analysed. Special attention was paid to the noble objectives that accompanied the creation of the complex, and their convergence with the intentions of the architects who a century ago shaped the forms of the Polish national style. At the same time, the negative consequences of creating a peculiar hybrid of a historicizing but still contemporary composition and a kind of open-air museum, which should be characterized by reliable compliance with the facts, were shown. This type of procedure has led to creating an illusion of an authentic historic settlement, its falsification and popularisation of a distorted image of an historic town. The work was based on in-situ studies as well as analyses of archival illustrations and textual material and research into the authentic, historical architecture of the region, which was to serve as a model for the designed complex.

Streszczenie: Artykuł poświęcony jest zapożyczeniom form w architekturze sakralnej II RP. Dokonano w nim analizy porównawczej kościołów wzniesionych w odległych od siebie miejscowościach (diecezja pińska i łódzka), przypisywanych różnym autorom, a wykazujących znaczne podobieństwo formalne. Opracowanie stanowi jednocześnie próbę ustalenia faktycznego autorstwa budowli. Przedstawia także pokrótce powszechną w czasie budowy omawianych kościołów ideę poszukiwania „stylu narodowego”, w którym zostały one ukształtowane i ukazuje podobne przykłady powielania form. Wywód oparto na archiwalnym materiale ikonograficznym – fotografiach z lat budowy, projektach oraz aktach pomocnych w rekonstrukcji życiorysu zawodowego twórców. Celem publikacji jest także przybliżenie postaci brzeskiego architekta Bronisława Nielubowicza i wątków pracy twórczej, które w ramach jej przygotowania udało się autorce ustalić.

Nadzieja na odzyskanie niepodleglości po dlugim okresie zaborow i świadomośc konieczności odbudowy panstwa Polskiego w zakresie materialnym, gospodarczym, strukturalnym i duchowym towarzyszyla Polakom jeszcze przed wybuchem I wojny światowej. Liczne zapiski świadczą o snutych wizjach i konkretnych planach odbudowy kreślonych juz od początku XX stulecia, a ukonkretnianych zaraz po zakonczeniu dzialan wojennych - na wielu obszarach jeszcze przed ostatecznym odzyskaniem niepodleglości. Dostepne źrodla pisane, artykuly, publikowane odczyty (m.in. Stefana Szyllera, Adolfa Szyszko-Bohusza, Jozefa Piotrowskiego, Jozefa Dziekonskiego) świadczą o glebokim przeświadczeniu owczesnego środowiska architektonicznego o roli polskiej architektury w odbudowie tozsamości narodowej spoleczenstwa, przez lata poddawanego probom wynarodowienia. Ta nieliczna grupa zbliżonych skalą, ale odmiennych w formie budynków, prezentuje zarówno różnorodność funkcji, do jakich w ramach potrzeb poszczególnych uniwersytetów zostały przystosowane, jak i metod adaptacji. Materiały stanowiące podstawę opracowania pochodzą ze zbiorów Wojewódzkiego Urzędu Ochrony Zabytków, Państwowego Archiwum w Lublinie oraz działów administracyjnych poszczególnych uczelni, gromadzących dokumentację związaną zarówno z historią, jak i bieżącymi modernizacjami oraz adaptacjami dworów.
