Szerzői körön azt az összetett személyes, gazdasági, politikai, vallási, ideológiai nézeteken és kapcsolatokon alapuló társadalmi viszonyrendszert értjük, amely az irodalmi művek létrejötte, publikálása és befogadása szempontjából meghatározó; a továbbiakban az "irodalmi hálózatok", "irodalmi csoportok" kifejezéseket rokon értelemben használjuk. 1 Az alábbiakban a teljesség és a szisztematikus kidolgozás igénye nélkül néhány szempontot szeretnénk felsorolni, amelyek e megközelítés hasznosságát igazolják.

Milton's New Hero: Homeric Revisions in Paradise Lost

In this paper I propose an important, but hitherto unexplored connection between Milton’s Paradis... more In this paper I propose an important, but hitherto unexplored connection between Milton’s Paradise Regained and Homer’s Odyssey. I argue at length that Paradise Regained is Milton’s critical revision of the story of Telemachus, the section of the Odyssey presenting the trials of Odysseus’s son. Recognizing Telemachus as Milton’s chief classical model for the Jesus of Paradise Regained provides solid grounding for earlier critics’ intuitions about Milton’s classicism, and it also sheds new light on Milton’s radically innovative poetic method.

This chapter demonstrates the profound and continuous influence that Milton’s works have exerted ... more This chapter demonstrates the profound and continuous influence that Milton’s works have exerted on Hungarian literature and culture since the first part of the eighteenth century. This chapter surveys the texts and paratexts of Hungarian translations of Paradise Lost and details some of the most successful renderings through the twenty-first century. These translations have significantly shaped Hungarian audiences’ responses to English literature as a whole and engaged them in more general critical debates about the sublime, the role of translation in the development of national literature, and prosody. The chapter concludes noting the curious Hungarian career of Milton’s other works: the dearth of modern translations of Paradise Regained, the two versions of Samson Agonistes from the communist era, a general preference for the shorter poems in recent years, and the several modern attempts to translate Milton’s prose tracts.

This article considers Milton’s imagery and allusions in Paradise Lost, with special focus on the... more This article considers Milton’s imagery and allusions in Paradise Lost, with special focus on the Vallombrosa simile and the bird simile of Book 6. I argue that Milton’s iconographic and allusive technique in some of his similes could best be described with recourse to Eisenstein’s theory of montage. The Russian director originally used characteristic sections of Milton’s epic (among other works) to illustrate the functioning of narrative montage. The theory, however, could and should be extended to cover the visual and allusive aspects or levels of the Miltonic narrative. Such an interpretation would not only throw new light on key elements of Miltonic enargeia, but also help us reconsider important strains in Milton criticism.

In this paper I consider the interaction of allusion and wit in the passage and argue that the lines may be regarded as an early but crucial instance of self-fashioning in Pope's oeuvre.

Paradise from behind the Iron Curtain. Reading, translating and staging Milton in Communist Hungary

Paradise from behind the Iron Curtain provides a detailed survey of the key responses to Milton’s... more Paradise from behind the Iron Curtain provides a detailed survey of the key responses to Milton’s work in Hungarian state socialism. The four decades between 1948 and 1989 saw a radical revision of previous critical and artistic positions and resulted in the emergence of some characteristically Eastern European responses to Milton’s works. Critical and artistic appraisals of Milton’s works in the communist era proved more controversial than receptions of other major Western authors: on the one hand, Milton’s participation in the Civil War earned him the title of a ‘revolutionary hero,’ on the other hand, religious aspects of his works were often disregarded and sometimes proactively suppressed. Ranging through all the genres of Milton’s oeuvre as well as the critical tradition, the book highlights these diverging responses and places them in the wider context of socialist cultural policy. In addition, the author presents the full Hungarian script of the 1970 theatrical performance of Milton’s Paradise Lost, the first of its kind since the work’s publication, including a parallel English translation, which enables a deeper reflection on Milton’s original theodicy and its possible interpretations in communist Hungary.

In September 2008, Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary hosted the internat... more In September 2008, Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary hosted the international conference "Milton Through the Centuries" to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Milton's birth. Bringing together scholars from all over the world, the conference marked the renewal of Milton Studies in Hungary. Participants offered novel readings of Milton's poetry, including Paradise Lost, Paradise Regain'd, Samson Agonistes, Comus and other poems, and explored connections between Milton's work and the history of literature, philosophy and art. This volume presents a selection of conference papers reflecting this diversity of approaches both to Milton's poetry and its influence through the centuries.
