Román se odehrává v autorově rodné Normandii a děj začíná v přímořské obci Port-Dieu, ležící proti anglickým Normanským ostrovům, v níž žije odedávna námořnická rodina Kalbrisů, jejíž nejmladší syn Roman zde v první osobě vypráví o svém dětství. Kalbrisové patří mezi asi stovku rodin v Port-Dieu, o nichž vědci tvrdí, že jsou to potomci dávné fénické kolonie. Nasvědčují tomu nejen nezvyklá jména, ale hlavně odlišný tělesný vzhled a dokonce i zvláštní typ rybářské lodi, který přesně odpovídá lodím starověku. Roman se chce stát, stejně jako jeho mrtvý otec, námořníkem. Matka je však proti a dá ho na vychování k místnímu podivínovi a potom do služby k lakotnému strýci do města. Roman stále touží uprchnout a dát se najmout na loď jako plavčík. Než k tomu dojde, prožije mnohá dobrodružství.
