Well there are a lot of cycles to fanfic wank but I am specifically referring to the one about authors wanking about fanfic of their own works.
I will warn you that this is going to be a cooking metaphor because most things in my life end up about cooking, but it's the most easily accessible one I can think of. And I will also preface this with the disclaimer that I don't write fanfic...and when I did, I never showed it to anyone.
Look...basically, an author is like a chef. Using their unique frame of reference, they create, from the available ingredients, a flavor profile. It is unique to them. It is their world of flavors. Everything they write is tinged with those flavors no matter how far afield they roam. Now the thing about chefs, and authors for that matter, is that they are not simply content to mix things up in their own kitchen and share it with a select few. So they open a restaurant and share it with the masses.
And if the idea is good, then the masses are going to want it. And the restaurant will climb the charts of popularity. And this is where it gets sticky for chefs and authors alike. Once you get to that point you make a decision. You either publish a book with your recipes or you don't. If you do decide to publish a book, you are releasing the secrets to your unique mojo.
And if you decide to do that, you can't blame people for wanting to play with that profile. Much like a chef can't get mad that the person who purchased their cookbook changes the ingredients. If you don't want people to play with your recipes, then by all means, KEEP THEM TO YOURSELF*. There is a reason why you can't copyright a recipe, and no matter how much we try and fight it, a story is basically a recipe.
There is a very simple solution to not being fanficed... I mean other than sucking...don't release your work. Once you have crossed that threshold into being published (and all the bennies that come with that), you no longer have the right to bitch. If you think about it, the whole HUGE food blogging world is nothing but a fanfic community by another name. And you don't see Dorie Greenspan or Alton Brown sending threatening letters to fans who make and then publish their recipes. Heck some cookbook authors go as far as to encourage imitation and experimentation.
Why can't fiction authors do the same? Or if they can't...just shut up and take it as the compliment it is.
