The DSM history is that of a development which is guided by the progressive incorporation of scientific evidence from the neurosciences and brain imaging techniques, the evolving medicalisation of psychiatry, interests of psychopharmacological therapeutics, as well as government and private insurance logics. The mental has become a space of financial dispute of which we have been excluded. This has contributed to its progressive deterritorialisation from spaces of existence and life practices, and its mounting pathologisation and medicalisation. We are often left with the impression that the mental is an individual problem, with its psychological-physical dimensions, when in fact it is collective from the start.
architecture participates. It does so by deploying Félix Guattari’s pragmatic conceptualisation of enunciation,
developed in Schizoanalytic Cartographies, as the basis for a renewed analysis of the Red House by Philip
Webb and William Morris. In distinguishing between polyphonic and ethico-aesthetic vectors of analysis, this
framework is able to capture the heterogeneity of forces at work in the project and the multiple ways in which
these enter in composition with people. In doing so, the essay attempts to expand our mode of understanding
architecture and how it operates beyond both critical and phenomenological paradigms. Ultimately, this essay
provides a new perspective on what an architectural project consists of.

Este ensaio enceta uma discussão em torno do protocolo experimental chamado 'grille', desenvolvido na clínica La Borde fundada por Jean Oury em 1952. O ensaio aborda o projecto da psicoterapia institucional refletido na grade. Oferece uma visão da grade como um instrumento de criação coletiva contínua da instituição de cuidado, com efeitos terapêuticos para todas as pessoas envolvidas, desde o pessoal até aos residentes e monitores. Descrevendo como a grade funcionava através da criação de ligações entre o material e o semiótico, o mental e o orga-nizacional, o social e o ambiental, com o efeito de não só singularizar a trajetória da própria instituição, mas também daqueles que nela vivem, o ensaio salienta a importância dos processos analíticos institucionais em projectos emancipatórios.

Abstract
This text presents a close discussion of the experimental protocol called 'grid' as developed at the clinic La Borde founded by Jean Oury in 1952. The paper teases out the institutional psychotherapy project reflected in the grid. It offers a view of the grid as an instrument of continuous collective creation of the institution of care, with therapeutic effects to all persons involved, from staff to residents and monitors. Describing how the grid worked by the creation of connections between the material and the semiotic, the mental and the organisational, the social and the environmental, to the effect of not only singularising the trajectory of the institution itself, but also of those living in it, the paper highlights the importance of institutional analytical processes in emancipatory projects.

understand that what was once referred to as “madness” was framed as health and illness, and specifically became an object of the medical sciences and psychiatry. And so, the fact that we think about and relate to our mental experiences today – it could be melancholy, depression, deliri-
um, agitation or anxiety – as kinds of illness is a function of the history of psychiatry. This has important practical and theoretical implications from which practices and institutions were and are organised today.
My work has focused on recovering alternative minor histories of psychiatry and the histories of social and political movements in connection to the notion of madness. I have sought to join these two threads and give a novel account of the relationship between political and social movements on the one hand and the evolution of psychiatry and ideas surrounding madness on the other. In other words, to address the separation of mental health from the field of the social and its knowledges, and the progressive transformation of madness into an object of psychiatry.
