Induced waveform transitions of dissipative solitons

The effect of an externally applied force upon dynamics of dissipative solitons is analyzed in th... more The effect of an externally applied force upon dynamics of dissipative solitons is analyzed in the framework of the one-dimensional cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation supplemented by a linear potential term. The potential accounts for the external force manipulations and consists of three symmetrically arranged potential wells whose depth is considered to be variable along the longitudinal coordinate. It is found out that under an influence of such potential a transition between different soliton waveforms coexisted under the same physical conditions can be achieved. A low-dimensional phase-space analysis is applied in order to demonstrate that by only changing the potential profile, transitions between different soliton waveforms can be performed in a controllable way. In particular, it is shown that by means of a selected potential, propagating stationary dissipative soliton can be transformed into another stationary solitons as well as into periodic, quasi-periodic, and chaotic spatiotemporal dissipative structures.

We develop a theoretical approach that makes it possible to analyze the role of multipole contrib... more We develop a theoretical approach that makes it possible to analyze the role of multipole contributions in the scattering spectra of arbitrarily shaped magnetic particles with the relative permittivity and permeability given in a general tensor-valued form. The method for calculating the exact multipole moments with the inclusion of induced electric polarization and magnetization is suggested and explicitly applied for dipole and quadrupole terms. The final expressions for the dipole and quadrupole moments are obtained in such a form that they can be easily implemented in numerical solvers. Successful verification of the analytical expressions for multipole moments and the multipole decomposition of the scattered field and scattering cross section is provided by comparing the results obtained for differently shaped magnetic particles using the analytical Mie theory, numerical discrete dipole approximation, and COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS software. As a particular example, the manifestation of the Faraday effect for fields scattered by a ferrite sphere is discussed in the framework of the multipole decomposition method with the derived magnetization terms. Accounting for the magnetic properties of particles in the multipole analysis of the electromagnetic scattering significantly expands the method's capabilities for studying and modeling metamaterial properties in the spectral ranges where natural materials can have a relative permeability different from unity.

Stable dissipative solitons are perfect carries of optical information due to remarkable stabilit... more Stable dissipative solitons are perfect carries of optical information due to remarkable stability of their waveforms that allows the signal transmission with extremely dense soliton packing without loosing the encoded information. Apart of unaffected passing of solitons through a communication network, controllable transformations of soliton waveforms are needed to perform all-optical information processing. In this paper we employ the basic model of dissipative optical solitons in the form of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with a potential term to study the interactions between two stationary dissipative solitons being under the control influences and use those interactions to implement various logic gates. Particularly, we demonstrate NOT, AND, NAND, OR, NOR, XOR, and XNOR gates, where the plain (fundamental soliton) and composite pulses are used to represent the low and high logic levels.

The three-dimensional Gaussian beam scattering from the bounded periodic sequence of one-to-one c... more The three-dimensional Gaussian beam scattering from the bounded periodic sequence of one-to-one composed isotropic magnetodielectric and bi-isotropic layers are investigated. The beam field is represented by an angular continuous spectrum of plane wave. The problem of the partial plane wave diffraction on the structure is solved using the circuit theory and the transfer matrix methods. It is found that after reflection from the structure, the circular Gaussian beam becomes, in general, an elliptical Gaussian beam, in addition to a displacement of the beam axis from the position predicted by ray optics.

Magnetoelectric dipole coupling effects in all-dielectric metasurfaces composed of particles with... more Magnetoelectric dipole coupling effects in all-dielectric metasurfaces composed of particles with bianisotropic electromagnetic response are investigated. This bianisotropic response is associated with the trapped mode excitation. Maintaining the trapped mode resonant conditions allows one to sufficiently increase the quality factor and reduce radiation losses in all-dielectric nanostructures (metasurfaces). An analytical model accounting for the contributions of both electric and magnetic dipole moments induced in particles by external electromagnetic fields is proposed. We show how bianisotropy can lead to the excitation of the trapped mode in metasurfaces. This mode corresponds to the electromagnetic coupling between the out-of-plane particle dipole moments, which do not radiate collectively from the metasurface plane resulting in the enhanced storage of electromagnetic energy. Our approach reveals a physical mechanism of the trapped mode excitation and demonstrates that the specially initiated bianisotropy of particles enables the energy flow between external electromagnetic waves and the trapped mode. Due to this bianisotropy, one can control the process of light-matter interaction and energy storage in all-dielectric metasurfaces via excitation of trapped modes.

Peculiarities of the wave localization, scalability and sequential splitting in the reflected field of both co-polarized and cross-polarized components are studied. The appearing of the additional peak multiplets in stopbands is revealed, and a correlation of their properties with chirality parameter is established.

The phenomenon of anapole has attracted considerable attention in the field of metamaterials as a... more The phenomenon of anapole has attracted considerable attention in the field of metamaterials as a possible realization of radiationless objects. We comprehensively study this phenomenon in the cluster-based systems of dielectric particles by considering conditions of anapole manifestation in both single trimers of disk-shaped particles and metamaterial composed on such trimers. Our analytical approach is based on the multipole decomposition method and the secondary multipole decomposition technique. They allow us to associate the anapole with the multipole moments of the trimer and the separate multipole moments of its constitutive particles. The manifestation of anapole in a two-dimensional metamaterial (metasurface) is confirmed by checking the resonant states in the reflected field as well as from the electromagnetic near-field patterns obtained from the full-wave numerical simulation. It is demonstrated that the anapole excitation in trimers results in the polarization-independent suppression of reflection with the resonant enhancement of local electromagnetic fields in the metasurface. Finally, experimental verification of the theoretical results is presented and discussed.

We demonstrate that a strong axial toroidal response of the metasurface is related to conditions of the trapped (dark) mode that is excited due the symmetry breaking in the cluster. We study the correlation between the toroidal response and asymmetry in the metasurface and nanocluster geometries, which appears from the different diameters of nanodisks or notches introduced into the nanodisks.

Dissipative vortices are stable two-dimensional localized structures existing due to balance betw... more Dissipative vortices are stable two-dimensional localized structures existing due to balance between gain and loss in nonlinear systems far from equilibrium. Being resistant to the dispersion and nonlinear distortions they are considered as promising information carriers for new optical systems. The key challenge in the development of such systems is getting control over vortex waveforms. In this paper we report on replication of two-dimensional fundamental dissipative solitons and vortices due to their scattering on a locally applied potential in the cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. It has been found that an appropriate potential non-trivially splits both fundamental solitons and vortices into a few exact copies without losing in their amplitude levels. A remarkably simple potential having a finite supporter along the longitudinal coordinate and a double peaked dependence on a single transverse coordinate is found to be suitable for the replication of the twodimensional localized structures.

A correlation has been established between geometrical and spectral properties of the structure under consideration. Numerical simulations are carried out for different structures to reveal the dependence of the reflection and transmission coefficients on the frequency, chirality parameter, and the angle of wave incidence.

Near the frequency of the gyrotropic-nihility state, the conditions of branches merging of bulk polaritons, as well as an anomalous dispersion of bulk and surface polaritons are found and discussed.

Here we demonstrate that optically-induced magnetic moments can be arranged in both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders in low-symmetry all-dielectric Mie-resonant metasurfaces where each meta-atom supports a localized trapped mode. We reveal that such metasurfaces possess not only strong optical magnetic response but also demonstrate significant polarization rotation of the normally incident linearly polarized waves at both AFM and FM resonances. We confirm these features theoretically and experimentally by measuring directly the spectral characteristics of different modes excited in a dielectric metasurface, and mapping near-field patterns of the electromagnetic fields at the microwave frequencies.

We report on a new technique which allows to gain a control over both lateral shift and waveform ... more We report on a new technique which allows to gain a control over both lateral shift and waveform of stable dissipative solitons propagating in a nonlinear magneto-optic planar waveguide. This control is realized by utilizing an inhomogeneous in space static magnetic field which is applied to the waveguide structure externally. The required magnetic field distribution is induced by a set of equidistantly arranged thin conducting wires placed on the top of the waveguide system. Each wire from the set has its fixed length along the direction of soliton propagation and carries a particularly modulated electric current. The dissipative soliton propagation is considered involving the one-dimensional cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation into which an additional linear term is incorporated that describes a magneto-optic effect.

A unit cell of the metamaterial is constructed by arranging two types of dielectric disks into an asymmetric quadrumer cluster. The toroidal response is achieved via the excitation of a trapped mode due to the symmetry breaking in the cluster. Dependence of the toroidal response on the degree of asymmetry in the cluster geometry, that appears from the different compositions of holes introduced into the disks, is studied both numerically and experimentally in the microwave regime.

The problem is solved using the 2x2-block-representation transfer-matrix formulation. A method that simultaneously allows taking into account different types of defects in the structure is proposed. Analysis of the dynamics of the electromagnetic properties of the investigated structure is carried out for different types of defects.

Artificial magnetism at optical frequencies can be realized in metamaterials composed of periodic... more Artificial magnetism at optical frequencies can be realized in metamaterials composed of periodic arrays of subwavelength elements, also called "meta-atoms". Optically-induced magnetic moments can be arranged in both unstaggered structures, naturally associated with ferromagnetic (FM) order, or staggered structures, linked correspondingly to antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. Here we demonstrate that such magnetic dipole orders of the lattices of meta-atoms can appear in lowsymmetry Mie-resonant metasurfaces where each asymmetric dielectric (non-magnetic) meta-atom supports a localized trapped mode. We reveal that these all-dielectric resonant metasurfaces possess not only strong optical magnetic response but also they demonstrate a significant polarization rotation of the propagating electromagnetic waves at both FM and AFM resonances. We confirm these findings experimentally by measuring directly the spectral characteristics of different modes excited in all-dielectric metasurfaces, and mapping near-field patterns of the electromagnetic fields at the microwave frequencies.

We confirm these features theoretically and experimentally by measuring directly the spectral characteristics of different modes excited in a dielectric metasurface, and mapping near-field patterns of the electromagnetic fields at the microwave frequencies.

We report on a new technique which allows to gain a control over both lateral shift and waveform ... more We report on a new technique which allows to gain a control over both lateral shift and waveform of stable dissipative solitons propagating in a nonlinear magneto-optic planar waveguide. This control is realized by utilizing an inhomogeneous in space static magnetic field which is applied to the waveguide structure externally. The required magnetic field distribution is induced by a set of equidistantly arranged thin conducting wires placed on the top of the waveguide system. Each wire from the set has its fixed length along the direction of soliton propagation and carries a particularly modulated electric current. The dissipative soliton propagation is considered involving the one-dimensional cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation into which an additional linear term is incorporated that describes a magneto-optic effect.

A unit cell of the metamaterial is constructed by arranging two types of dielectric disks into an asymmetric quadrumer cluster. The toroidal response is achieved via the excitation of a trapped mode due to the symmetry breaking in the cluster. Dependence of the toroidal response on the degree of asymmetry in the cluster geometry, that appears from the different compositions of holes introduced into the disks, is studied both numerically and experimentally in the microwave regime.

The problem is solved using the 2x2-block-representation transfer-matrix formulation. A method that simultaneously allows taking into account different types of defects in the structure is proposed. Analysis of the dynamics of the electromagnetic properties of the investigated structure is carried out for different types of defects.

Magnetic Dipole Ordering in Resonant Dielectric Metasurfaces

Artificial magnetism at optical frequencies can be realized in metamaterials composed of periodic... more Artificial magnetism at optical frequencies can be realized in metamaterials composed of periodic arrays of subwavelength elements, also called "meta-atoms". Optically-induced magnetic moments can be arranged in both unstaggered structures, naturally associated with ferromagnetic (FM) order, or staggered structures, linked correspondingly to antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. Here we demonstrate that such magnetic dipole orders of the lattices of meta-atoms can appear in lowsymmetry Mie-resonant metasurfaces where each asymmetric dielectric (non-magnetic) meta-atom supports a localized trapped mode. We reveal that these all-dielectric resonant metasurfaces possess not only strong optical magnetic response but also they demonstrate a significant polarization rotation of the propagating electromagnetic waves at both FM and AFM resonances. We confirm these findings experimentally by measuring directly the spectral characteristics of different modes excited in all-dielectric metasurfaces, and mapping near-field patterns of the electromagnetic fields at the microwave frequencies.
