The paper also views on how the term Hindoo and its definition of population content attempted to generate an idea of homogenization of people who didn't belong to Semitic religions. It also views on how the differences in terms of life patterns, religious beliefs and practices and social hierarchies in terms of jati latent in the societies of these regions were reflected in the surveys exposing the irreligiosity of the term Hindoo.

traditional social forces including the people in power, especially in the
princely states, to curb the rights of the people who attempted to gain
freedom from the clutches of jati and to declare their faith in Christian religion. As this was the situation, there happened serious engagements among the native rulers and the Missionary groups. This paper attempts to trace out the situation.

important role in sanctioning the jobs in the government offices. Only people from certain jatis were considered for posting. The situation of Malabar was different. This paper attempts to trace out the differences in the service structures and the attempts on the part of qualified persons to overcome the situation.

One of the arenas in which the colonial officials and scholars concentrated their attention was on the Religious studies. The changing vocabulary to denote the non-familiar religious groups of Indian Sub-continent is an indicator of how well these scholars and officials were perplexed pertaining to the religious identity of the native population. It was at this juncture they sorted out to carve a religious identity to the cultural-others of Indian Sub-continent. The changing definitions and modalities for defining the religious population suffice the proof for the confusion on the part of new defining religion.

Arattupuzha Velayudha Panikkan was the inspirational force behind these engagements. His engagements were multi faceted. He developed cultural, political, economic and religious tools to challenge, retaliate and intrude in to the domains of the dominant jatis.

who were not backed up by the stalwart patriarchs–the
leaders of reforms among Namboothiris, yet fought their
causes and possessed their rights during the early decades
of 20th century. These were, though not among the celebrated
activities–such as widow remarriages, marriage of
younger brothers of Namboothiri families, abandoning of
Ghosha, etc.–important in constructing the perspectives
of rights among the women among Namboothiris. The
demands and the activities to materialize those by these
women were very much associated with the everyday lives
and thus were mainly focused on sustenance, which the
state and jati, in di›erent contexts were forced to accept.

The works of the leaders of Socio-Religious Movements are subjected to revision, questioning the usual connotations like women emancipation.
